I'll just wait 'til it's released on the twelfth. As much as I want to play this right fucking now, I might as well wait for them to work a few bugs out.
I played for a little while today and quickly came across an abandoned mineshaft that is HUGE. I still haven't explored all the veins of this one system, but goddamn. I don't know what Notch tweaked in the terrain generator, but I'm liking this very much so far.

How can I get this to work on Mac? I replaced the .jar file and the game freezes at the loading screen. Any help would be appreciated.
@explodingvan: open up minecraft.jar with winrar, and delete the META-INF folder. Other than that, I am not sure what could be causing it, sorry. Good luck!
This update doesn't seem to like my computer at all. It makes the game almost unplayable at like 4fps. I usually get 30+. I'll just wait for the official update and hope that the issues are resolved :)

For those running from laptops or low end machines, it seems like the debug code is still active (something Mojang has had a habit of doing) because it runs SLOW on my laptop that used to get 120 fps.
Just a heads up to anyone wanting to run it on something other than a gaming PC, it's probably better to wait til the 12th.

No problem, it's worth checking out just to explore and see what's new, but don't expect the same frame rates you had with the stable releases.

I'm getting a noticeable FPS drop while exploring outside, but in caves it runs rather fine (playing on a rather crap laptop). I've only come across one game freeze so far, definitely worth an early download.

I've got a very average PC that's running 1.8 just as well as 1.7.x. Not saying your info or assessment is wrong, but here's one exception. *shrug*
I do seem to recall someone mentioning that the render distances above "normal" were problematic for the early release, but I never heard any follow-up. Might be worth trying out for some people.

@MrFunsockz: I noticed this, but more importantly is that the game crashes upon attempting to use a furnace or... something.
But still, I got a taste of the new stuff, so I'm happy. Once the full release is out, then stability of the game returns and I can enjoy everything in its splendor.

Anyone else having issues with the new lighting system? I noticed as dusk started falling when I had my POV extended (to about 90, I believe), the game would cut to a black screen with the text "Rendering objects" and never come back. I'm pretty sure it did this every time the light level dropped. Setting the POV back to normal seemed to make it work though.
I have to say, aside from that little glitch, the new lighting is really effective. Since it doesn't redraw the map every time the levels drop, it's a lot more like real sunset, where you don't really see it get darker, but at some point realize, "hey, wasn't it a lot brighter a few seconds ago?"

@Jordan, Jos, everyone with dodgy framerates - Go into video settings and change performance to "Max FPS", I've now got 250fps once again, also for anyone getting memory leaks on a 64-bit OS, do make sure that the 64bit version of Java is installed, at least I had that problem until I realised the only version of Java I had was x86, derp.
Been playing all night now without issues. Only really weird thing I came across was a mineshaft that generated through a underground canyon, so the wooden supports were just floating up there in the chasm.

Wait, where? Minecraft.net doesn't really say anything about early releases, nor does Notch's tweet, nor does Notch's Tumblr say anything about this early release!

Mac users ... to install the updated file, copy the file here:
home directory/Library/Application Support/Minecraft/bin/
Make sure you back up the old one in case something goes wonkers.

From watching the yogcast videos of 1.8, it looks very buggy. The endermen were just holding out blocks to them, and the world spawn often created unplayable worlds, I.e islands with no trees surrounded by water.

I think Notch was being sarcastic about the build being "leaked" and just had someone from Mojang put it up on 4chan to get things started. That way, the more excited players could (finally) get a taste of things without waiting through another delay and Mojang could brush off any bug complaints since this build wasn't an "official" release. That's just my take, though.
I also ended up having a furnace-related crash (which I couldn't replicate), but they seem to be the most common bug so far. Oh well, still having a blast with the same abandoned mine shaft. 3000+ torches placed and I'm still haven't finished exploring it. It's like a miniature mines of Moria. D:

This WAS leaked, you should do a little research before posting things sometimes. The file was sent to the public by somebody who was given early access, and then Notch posted on Twitter saying it's OK if you download it but let them know if you see any bugs and you should feel a little bad about yourself.
