Ask and you shall receive! We got rained in this weekend (causing Miami to shut down like cryptonite was falling) and knocked out a little tech project we've always been putting off. I'm proud to present to you a little anti-climatic video of our new project: Destructoid Mobile Edition! If you've ever tried accessing Dtoid from a mobile device once you know that it will try to feed you the entire site, which is only suitable for a broadband PC. That said, its a quick way to crash your mobile device. It drove anybody nuts, so we go to work on it and are close to completion.
The new version of Dtoid Mobile was designed to be a no-nonsense wad of content that your phone can digest. You can also now surf through it easily without developing instant carpel tunnel. As you'll see in the video you can browse everything on the home page in one shot without having to click around through headlines, read through paginated comments and see your best friend's signature bouncing breast avatar. You can even browse through everyone's community blogs! Searching also works surprisingly well despite my gigantor logo faux paus.
To access this version of the site just surf to dtoid.com as you normally would. Note: This is a 3-day old project, so it's very much in beta. All phones are not supported yet -- you can help us extend it by adding your phone type. Alternatively, you can also use PetiePal's lite version which already works like a charm on most phones: http://m.mofuse.com/destructoid
Before we get too ahead of ourselves we wanted to ask the community what other features they would like to see and how they'd like the home page to look like. Should we rip out all the photos so that it loads faster? Would you prefer more of an RSS-style display without comments and extended text? Anything else? Let us know, we'll make it happen!
[Special thanks to ShadowXOR, PetiePal, and everyone that contributed phone profiles already. Also, thanks to Topher for finding that insane Zelda remix and to Tlack for being immune to regular sleeping hours!]
Dtoid contest for iPhones or Blackberries?
And it's spelled kyrptonite, with a K.
Three cheers for addictions.
I would say the most important things to me on a mobile version of the site would be:
1. Front page stories, basically why we check Dtoid on the go
2. Condensed header graphics. A lot of these article headers are pretty hilarious and they add to the articles themselves.
3. Comments-Comments usually are just text unless people go nutso and start posting a ton of picture comment replies. As with graphics, comments often add a lot of alternate viewpoints or feedback to the article itself.
Basically these all are incorporated already. Coupled with my mobile site you've got a quick text 'n pictures version as well as the full fledged deal, so you even have a choice of waiting those extra 10 seconds now :)
Also confirmed your mobile version works splendidly on both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, (essentially the same hardware, Wi-Fi-wise).
And btw, where can we get that rocking Zelda remix?
If anyone wants that super rad Zelda remix you can get it here. :)
I don't know about the DS, but it didn't work for me on the PSP... Then again, it didn't work on my Windows-based phone, either. Oh well, it's still in development, after all.
