Home #Beta

Ask and you shall receive! We got rained in this weekend (causing Miami to shut down like cryptonite was falling) and knocked out a little tech project we've always been putting off. I'm proud to present to you a little anti-climatic video of our new project: Destructoid Mobile Edition! If you've ever tried accessing Dtoid from a mobile device once you know that it will try to feed you the entire site, which is only suitable for a broadband PC. That said, its a quick way to crash your mobile device. It drove anybody nuts, so we go to work on it and are close to completion.

The new version of Dtoid Mobile was designed to be a no-nonsense wad of content that your phone can digest. You can also now surf through it easily without developing instant carpel tunnel. As you'll see in the video you can browse everything on the home page in one shot without having to click around through headlines, read through paginated comments and see your best friend's signature bouncing breast avatar. You can even browse through everyone's community blogs!  Searching also works surprisingly well despite my gigantor logo faux paus.

To access this version of the site just surf to dtoid.com as you normally would.  Note: This is a 3-day old project, so it's very much in beta. All phones are not supported yet -- you can help us extend it by adding your phone type. Alternatively, you can also use PetiePal's lite version which already works like a charm on most phones: http://m.mofuse.com/destructoid

Before we get too ahead of ourselves we wanted to ask the community what other features they would like to see and how they'd like the home page to look like.  Should we rip out all the photos so that it loads faster?  Would you prefer more of an RSS-style display without comments and extended text?  Anything else?  Let us know, we'll make it happen!

[Special thanks to ShadowXOR, PetiePal, and everyone that contributed phone profiles already. Also, thanks to Topher for finding that insane Zelda remix and to Tlack for being immune to regular sleeping hours!]

Fucking win! I will be more of a destructoid addict than ever. I've got tons of experience with mobile apps so I'll play around with it and hopefully make a couple good suggestions.

Works like a charm on the Blackberry Pearl, my only suggestion is to trim down the front page. Drop the photos and only include a sentence or two under the headers. Save the fat for after the story is selected. The current layout makes my scrolling thumb hurt. Other than that, totally rad for three days worth of work.

Honestly, I think phone innernets are generally retarded and useless for anything but necessary information (like maps). But I'm sure some people like it, so hooray and stuff.

This is relevant to my interests because I just purchased a windows mobile phone and it takes 937kb (@ $0.05/kb in data!) on the go, and a long ass time to load dtoid even over wifi. SO HAPPY NOW!!!

Wedge: I thought it was useless too until I needed something to do on my 45 minute bus rides to and from work. Reading Destructoid and Digg really help pass the time.

Awesome, a mobile rape device! Will there be a specially tailored picture on the mobile site that will fit the entire screen? That would be awesome to turn a blackberry into some kind of Dtoid UberBadge. You could stuff it into peoples faces at a conventions and everything. "Hi, see this eBadge? It means you give me free swag.. NOW"

Photos for the actual articles are good, peoples avatar pictures are too much. Ability to still post/log in is good.

Yayyyy. Thanks for the shoutout Niero.

I would say the most important things to me on a mobile version of the site would be:

1. Front page stories, basically why we check Dtoid on the go
2. Condensed header graphics. A lot of these article headers are pretty hilarious and they add to the articles themselves.
3. Comments-Comments usually are just text unless people go nutso and start posting a ton of picture comment replies. As with graphics, comments often add a lot of alternate viewpoints or feedback to the article itself.

Basically these all are incorporated already. Coupled with my mobile site you've got a quick text 'n pictures version as well as the full fledged deal, so you even have a choice of waiting those extra 10 seconds now :)

Also confirmed your mobile version works splendidly on both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, (essentially the same hardware, Wi-Fi-wise).

And btw, where can we get that rocking Zelda remix?

I don't know about the DS, but it didn't work for me on the PSP... Then again, it didn't work on my Windows-based phone, either. Oh well, it's still in development, after all.
