The earlier story revealing that the BBC wasn't planning on producing a proper Doctor Who game was false -- it appears the particular BBC employee interviewed for that story was out of the loop and literally didn't know what the hell he or she was talking about.

Eurogamer reports that UK developer Ironstone Partners is indeed working on a Who game for the DS, PS2, and PC to be published by Eidos Interactive, though they have refused to divulge any further details. The videogame might possibly be based off Doctor Who's particular Top Trumps card deck, which is another way of saying that the videogame might possibly be unnecessary and totally boring.

Honestly, if the first major Doctor Who videogame is simply a virtual card game, I'll be forced to bust some heads. It's gotta be David Tennant running around through time and space looking dapper, or nothing at all.

[Praises be to TheGoldenDonut, though he's probably forgotten by now because he sent the tip in nearly a week ago]

Must be good. Must have Tennant and unlockable Tom Baker. Otherwise will cry.

I know this show is supposed to have a huge nerd following but from the 1 episode I've seen on BBC america it just look like a crappy sci fi network show.

He should start out as Christopher Eccleston and then level-up to David Tennant. Still not as important as next-gen textures and modelling for Rose though. Itagaki, provide nice Rose physics damnit!

Top Trumps according to wiki:

A pack of Top Trumps is based on a particular theme, such as cars, aircraft, dinosaurs or characters from a popular film or television series. Each card in the pack describes an item from that theme, in terms of a number of figures. For example, in a pack on the cars theme, each card will describe a model of car in terms such as its engine size, weight, top speed.

All the cards are dealt among the players. There must be at least two players, and at least one card for each player. The starting player (normally the person to the left of the dealer) selects a category from his or her topmost card and reads out its value. Each other player does the same. The winner of the round is the one with the highest (or otherwise best) value for the chosen item. That player wins the topmost cards of all the other players, places them at the bottom of his pile, and then chooses the category for the next round.

In the event of a draw, the cards are placed in the centre and a new category is chosen from the next card by the same person as in the previous round. The winner of that round obtains all of the cards in the centre as well as the top card from each player.

Players are eliminated when they lose their last card and the winner is the one who obtains the whole pack. Some house rules allow 'three card pick', whereby a player who has three cards remaining is allowed to choose any of their three cards to play with. Typically, this lengthens the game considerably.

Why the hell don't they make Magic:The Gathering videogames? I really hope they change the direction of this Doctor Who game, the last Timelord deserves much better.

Unless they go with Tom Baker I think I'll pass on the game.
