Yoshitaka Amano does it again: Final Fantasy IV Japanese Boxart is beautiful photo

I never quite get over how incredible Yoshitaka Amano's art is. I've sometimes found myself wishing I could play a Final Fantasy fully illustrated by him, rather than just enjoy his concept art. The new Final Fantasy IV boxart is no exception. If you aren't familiar with him, check out Biten, a splendid compendium of his art in vivid color. He recently wrote and illustrated his first graphic novel, Hero. Fantasy fans should love the story, self described by Amano as "a legend of the future." I myself am anxiously awaiting the next chapter.

Seriously? This looks like something a ten-year old would sketch in their notebook during a boring Geography class. Ahh well, beauty's in the eye of the beholder and all that.

The lips always freak me out. Why every single character has to be wearing gothic lipstick, I have no idea. Generally each Final Fantasy has their own fashions of clothing and hair, but Amano's lipstick transcends all FF barriers.

Times is absolutely dead on here, this cover looks like it was made with half a pack of colored pencils by a small untalented blind child.

I didn't think much of his art when I first saw it back about 6 years ago, but for the last few years i have totally loved that style. Crazy how that happens...

I've always found Amano's art to be ugly as hell, rarely does his art match what the characters actually look like.

All of his art is done block print style. Basically, he's a lot better with a knife and linoleum than most people are with, well, a knife and linoleum.

Ah, agreed another wonderful contribution by Amano. I've been a huge fan of his for years, and can never get over how beautiful each of his art pieces are.

I love Amano, and it kills me everytime a FF game comes out over here without his artwork (FFIII's Japan and Euro cover was awesome, so of course they did away with it for the US release).

This cover kind of sucks though. It just doesn't look right for some reason.

Yes. I always imagined the pixelated characters in the early games in his style as I was playing. I wish the remakes would use his art for everything...

It's a shame the in-game graphics will mostly be blocky midgets.

I dunno, that kinda looks terrible... especially from the look of most of the polished artwork that comes through the Squenix doors.

@ 8BitSunshine:

I'm the exact same way. I wasn't really impressed when I first saw it for Final Fantasy VI, but by the time IX came out, I was a total fan. It's definitely a style that needs to grow on you. Now I too, want to see a full game featuring his artwork. I understand why they didn't during the PS1 days, but with the PS2 and especially now with the PS3, they have no excuse not to use his artwork in-game. When Mistwalker was announced, Sakaguchi said he was going to work with Amano on a game. Why hasn't anything happened yet?
