I feel that a portable can be both a portable and a home console but a console is not a portable device. Might I add that it's a bit tricky putting PC's in the mix because they come in portable form just not scaled down to what most would consider to be a true portable nor do they have on-board controls AKA buttons and sticks.
But anyway I see the portables and consoles being on of the same. :P
So in all consoles won't die...they just get smaller to the point they are considered handhelds.
As for buttons and touchscreens, I don't think they'll be going anywhere any time soon, because things like motion controls and just about anything that isn't a button controls like shit, especially things like Gyroscope. FUCK Gryoscope.
I'll stick with buttons and PC/Consoles for now.
A. I am not a big handheld fan
B. I will never own a really good computer
C. alot of pc gamers say not to play on a laptop and since college the only computer I want is a laptop and I dont want to spend money on a desk top.
thats what makes gaming fun
Its already happened, The ds and psp smoked everything this gen. And the 3ds is smoking everything now
Please god no, can we please stop trying to revolutionize controls? Controllers and buttons have been around as long as they have for a reason.
For PC gaming; I know that you can set up your space to be really comfortable, but most likely the PC will not be connected to a huge TV, and you won't be playing it from a comfy couch. This is already a reason why console gaming will live out. Also, there's the thing that console gaming does not require constant hardware upgrades every few games - like PC gaming. There's also a lot of people that prefer to game on a console due to less setup required.
How many GOTY awards do you see going to portable games, and even if they did make Skyrim on PS Vita or 3DS, do you really think it would be the same?
Just look at how people felt about the Valkyria Chronicles series when after one game it went from being a PS3 series to a PSP series. Whilst there were some people who didn't care what it was on there were still many annoyed (myself included, even though I still got a PSP and VC2) at the move away from consoles. Now imagine if that was a Call Of Duty or Mass Effect game that went from console focused to portable focused.
1) GOTY are worthless. And rarely ever capture the best game of the year. You know why? because its opinion. On many sites radiant historia got goty, as did skyrim, as did other games. WHo cares
2) The majority were ecstatic. Because it meant more awesome games. Hell 3 was far superior to 1. Valkyria is a complete set only with games 1-3. Hell the fact that we even got sequels at all was because the psp was the clear choice system with the bigger install base
1. Sure, GOTY awards may only be opinion, but still a general indication of what many gamers enjoyed most. I haven't played Radiant Historia, so I can't comment on it's quality (I'm sure it's a good game though, would try it if I had a DS), but I don't really know anyone personally who has played it, compared with many who absolutely love Skyrim. The point I am getting at is that there are more relevant gaming franchises within console/PC gaming than there is with portable gaming.
2. Cheaper development costs would have played just as much a part in switching the VC as install base did. Kind of hard to argue install base as a point with VC3 considering it is only limited to Japan at the moment. There are still many hoping that if it does eventually see a localisation, it will be either as part of a PS3 HD collection with VC2, or as a PSN game.
Another point I would like to put out there, is the game I am in the middle of right now is Metal Gear Peace Walker for the PS3 as part of the HD collection. Having already played it on PSP also, I can say it is a much nicer experience with HD resolution and 60fps. Some of those boss fights just weren't meant for the PSP's tiny screen.
As for a new type of interface? The only way up would be mind control, but that'd be debatable.
Oh, you crazy japanese.. proving yourselves irrelevent on the global stage a little more each day.
There are mobile processors are already more powerful than the chip in the 360 slim and mobiles (phones at least) have a MUCH shorter release cycle.
You can already tether PS3, 360, and Wii controllers to Android based tablets, and stream off of the Tegra3 based devices in full 1080p (in 3D as well, actually), and they have their own internet 4G has down speeds of +6.5 mbps. And this is right now, as technology continues at the pace it's at the time that we're speculating on is around 2015-17 it's just going to keep advancing.
Now that's not to say that larger hardware won't advance in a similar pace but the advantages of a mobile platform are vast, and for pure power that's were the PC aspect will probably come in.
Just as a quick exercise in speculation, let me create a product for you that we have the technology to make pretty much right now.
So Windows 8 is supposed to be Microsoft's all platform OS, PC's, tablets, phones, etc. It's been strongly rumored on the internet that it will have native 360 emulation capabilities. So it's not too far of a leap that you will be able to access your Xbox live services, games, and content on your Win 8 PC (see GFWL already exists). BUT Win 8 is supposed to run the same on all platforms... So we already know that there are mobile chips right now that are more powerful than the 360; that we can tether 360 controllers to Android phones, and that we can stream from phones in full 1080p. With a built in constant and very fast internet connection we now have reduced the functionality of the 360 into a mobile platform!
Now whether or not they actually do this, which I mean come on how much of an awesome plug for their Windows phones would that be, we currently have the technology to do so. Give it 5/7 years and this does not seem like a far fetched idea that counsels as we know them will cease to exist.
It seems like they will probably become more of a service that you can run on many different platforms, and Sony and Microsoft already make phones so it's not to big of a leap. And Nintendo had always had a strong mobile presence, so it might be a bit different from them, but companies can adapt.
And to say that home dedicated counsels will disappear forever probably is not accurate either, but their importance in video games is probably going to be less when compared with the convenience of a powerful mobile platform and the modular updatability and power that comes with a PC (and gaming PC's have gotten a LOT cheaper to build than they once were).
Perhaps I'm being crazy, but I sure as hell would like to be able to play my 360 games on Xbox Live while sitting in a car or waiting in an airport.
