Yakuza 4 dated in Japan: March 18th photo

Now that we know PS3 gangster game Yakuza 3 is coming stateside, I don't feel so bad now hearing about Japan's new release date for Yakuza 4. Sega's portal revealed its date, March 18, 2010, and its price, 7,980 yen ($91). For series fans, especially the ones that import the Japanese versions and poke around in them, this is good news. Q1 of 2010 is shaping up to be crazy.

I hope that everyone that wanted Yakuza 3 buys it. That way we know we'll be in good shape for Yakuza 4. Put your money where your mouth is.

In the gallery below, you'll see some really cool screenshots, fresh from Sega. I'm hoping to see more on the minigames sometime soon. From the sneak previews we saw at TGS, it looks like they're going over the top with Yakuza 4.

I’ve never played a Yakuza game so I don’t know what they’re all about, so could someone put those last two pics in some context for me?

This game has four bastards as playable characters and looks better than Yakuza 3 IMO. It is therefore relevant to my interests.

Four bastards.

Is it me or do these screenshots look like crap? Nevertheless, a Yakuza game sounds like fun. I don't know anything about this series but I'll be checking out that port of Yakuza 3 (Japanese with subtitles!).

@Handy: Yakuza* = Shenmue x GTA x JDrama
*the Yakuza is the Japanese Mafia(sort of)

I don't think the GTA comparison is accurate. There are no cars and no guns. I've never played Shenmue (I know) so I can't make that comparison. To me the closest example would be a modern day version of Way of the Samurai, but shorter and a less-open storyline.

It's a story-driven (much of the dialog is text only), pseudo top-down (no skybox), open world, with a heavy focus on melee combat. It also includes optional side-missions with NPCs you meet on the street and dating simulation type encounters if you choose to play them at hostess clubs. There's an inventory system and character progression, as well.

If you haven't picked up the first two US releases and this sounds interesting to you, I recommend them. There's a really rewarding experience to be found in this series.

Yakuza is River City Ransom with a plot and mini-games. Which is awesome.

Also I'm pretty sure a golf club can't block a chainsaw.... but who knows.

Let's hope it doesn't take as long as Yakuza 3 to come stateside...

@Killrig: Well, you're right. It's not much like GTA, however, there are certain elements that make the comparison valid(imo). To me Yakuza's the Japanese/Asian equivalent of GTA.

@ZeDoktor: Yeah, in a way, it is. There isn't anything else to compare it against. I honestly wish it was a bit more like GTA than it currently is (ie: full camera control, a vehicles or at least more subway action for transportation, and a few others).
