A long long time ago, when I was working on the now defunct Zwei!! project, I discovered it had two special mini-games that become accessible only after certain events are completed. One game is a tetris clone that I don't care too much for, the other is this typing tutor game, referred to by Falcom as "Typing of Ys." Years later, I thought it would be nice to separate this game out of Zwei!! to make it available for everyone after someone brought it up in a messageboard forum I visit. So here you go!
You're probably thinking that this game is a steaming pile of shit because it is a typing game, and I don't blame you -- I can't stand The Typing of the Dead (and I even own a Dreamcast keyboard FTW) but this game is something else.
The music, like all Y's games, is pretty damn solid. The graphics are retro crisp. Best of all, the phrases you'll be typing are quite entertaining -- they did it in such a way where they tell a story and ridiculous joke phrases, so you don't feel like you're typing like a monkey for ten minutes. Obviously it's no Gears of War, but for it's highly specialized typing non-commercial game genre, I give it a 9/10 only because it doesn't run full screen and they went budget on the title screen, but this is still an early build. Fans of the original Action/RPG will love it -- and the price is definitely right. Download the game for free here
If you are a touch typist, I recommend that you jump straight to hard move for the most fun. I've never been able to get anything higher than a C today but I reckon that in a few days I'll work my way up ... and start posting stories faster on Destructoid as well! Just another reason to claim that all of my marketable skills have come from video games. If they can get the rights and put this on XBL or cell phone games, they would bank. Between this and Elite Beat Agents I am blissfully preoccupied before I get my Wii60PS31080pTV.

wow. Nothing like coming back from a Wednesday bar night to surreality on Dtoid. I will download and play this immediately despite being two in the friggin' AM. I am that intrigued.
Oh right on. I don't know why I pinned Wanderers to the name, it didn't register. I never had Book 1 and 2 because I couldn't afford a TG16 back in the day, so that was word association. I'll fix asap!
That was pretty sweet, and way harder than I thought it was going to be. Maybe it's just late, but I couldn't get very far, and I'm a pretty fast typer. I also couldn't get any higher than a C rank.
Definitely on my to-do list. I have every mainstream retro console except the TG16 (I'm waiting on a good deal for a Duo, hopefully the demand will drop with end of year next gen consoles up there) and a 7800. Definitely getting 1 and 2 as soon as I can get the hardware. Who knows, we might also see them on the Wii channel if we're lucky.
