XSEED to write their own script for Lunar? photo

Liked the Working Designs scrpit for Lunar: The Silver Star when it was released on the PlayStation some years back? Well, don't expect that same translation to be in the upcoming PSP version. If what RPG Land is saying is true, XSEED is looking to ditch the Working Designs translation and do their own.

That's not to say that the XSEED translation won't be good. It could be great. Hell, they could make it better by spending time to weed out all of the dated pop culture references that Working Designs pumped into the PS1 version.

Still, fans were really attached to the work that Working Designs did on the game. I was. Hell, I even liked the Sega CD original.

XSEED, don't jack this up. Lunar is that one classic RPG that many gamers hold dear.

scrpit? Glad dale's not translating it

Xseed would have to pay Working Designs or whatever they are called now so I don't see why they wouldn't just do it in house.

Working Designs always produced great translations. Not sure why they feel the need to redo it, unless they're looking to add even more story elements.

I've been thinking about buying a used PSP around the time of the PSP Go release...and if XSEED's translation is any good, then I am definitely buying it.

Two reasons I can think of for a complete re-write. The first are the dated pop references WD is (in)famous for inserting into the games. The second is merely a matter of licensing issues, as WD no longer exists. (They are now known as Gaijinworks.)

the dated pop references should stay in though. Why update it to make it more "modern".

I disliked SE change up in the Final Fantasy: Tactics script for the PSP. I don't think it helped make the story better, and it ulitmately changed my view on the game (slightly)

I have faith that XSEED will give us a quality translation. I've been impressed with the translations on limited number of their titles that I've played.

Good. There's only been a few games where keeping the original localization is worth it (Earthbound being a notable one). I don't mind a few references ("I, Garland shall knock you all down" in particular) but now that you have more space to work with make the translation as understandable as possible without adding in things that change the plot (one of the main reasons I see people who don't like WD's work bring up).

Also fuck changing names, such as changing Butz to Bartz.

What's a scrpit? Sorry, but I just had to ask.

Ckarasu: It's the text the game shows when you play it.

@Rabite: Either that was a silly remark, or you didn't read. In case it's the second option: Scrpit isn't a word. I was pointing out a spelling error. If it's the first option: LOL.

Do not try and fix what is not broken!

Working Designs' script was excellent, and I'm 99.9% sure XSEED will fuck it up and release a worse script.

Leave the classics alone!

I'm glad to hear there will be a new translation. I liked the one by Working Designs, but I hope they remove those pop culture references. Not only are they dated now, but I think they were silly and forced back when they were timely.

@Ganjookie: Actually, Lunar: SSSC's script was an update of the original Lunar's script. While Working Designs translated both, the original Lunar's English translation didn't contain the pop culture references that Lunar: SSSC's translation did. Additionally, Lunar: SSSC's Japanese script was altered from that of the original Lunar.

I'm basically saying, the version you're talking about is already an alteration. I fail to see what's the harm in doing it again, especially if this new translation is actually closer to Lunar: SSSC's Japanese script.

Given that this one is mostly to make new people fall in love with the game I once fell for, I find it more than fitting to update it to a new audience. Purism for the sake of purism is counter-productive. If you feel any changes to the script you once held dear would detract from the experience, you can always resort to the previous version.

Even then, I find it a little unsettling that someone would actually give up on a game because they feel it does not fully represent how one remebered it. Luve and love, people. XSEED has been doing top-notch translations and I'm sure this one won't fail us.

I, however, will not play it, for I think I've had my share of Lunar. As much as I would love to do so, nostalgia still feels pretty good in this particular case.

It seems like this game gets worse with every re-release. Sure the PSX version looked a lot better and had that extra dungeon at the end, but they took away Alex's magic abilities and I liked the original ending better. Plus, Alex would NEVER say, "Oh my God" since they all believe in a Goddess who he knows personally!!!

And then the GBA, ugh.

Maybe XSeed will pull it out though. They've done some good work in the past and Working Designs was getting a little silly with their translations by the time they got to Playstation. But the visual redesign still gives me the creeps.

I loved Working Designs, and Lunar was one of my favorite RPGs back in the day. Xseed on the other hand has really been letting me down lately. So needless to say, this news really worries me.

I'm stoked I still have the original Silver Star and Eternal Blue for Sega CD. Working Designs had a crushing localization team. Xseed... not so much. I'm crossing my fingers, but it seems somewhat illogical to remake a game and then remove a large part of what made the game incredible in the first place.

Ugh, you know how it goes when someone tries to breathe new life into the script of a classic RPG--you're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't. Right, Dragon Quest V?

It's safe to say your mileage will vary; I'm looking forward to it, all the same.

I feel left out after wading through Final Fantasies, Suikodens, Tales, SMT's and whatnot without touching Lunar. Forgive me!
