I think you're being a bit unfair to say that all the letter writing campaigns, mass twitter replying, and getting their voices heard was just simple whining. Operation Rainfall encouraged people to be polite when writing to Nintendo, and I don't think requesting that a companies best interests be localizing a highly regarded game = gamers being whiny.
@Magnalon
Good point. I don't know what's going on in Nintendo's mind, but I feel that Rainfall did a great job on making sure that Nintendo wouldn't forget that Xenoblade is a potential money maker and good PR move. I was more addressing the haters who said Rainfall would fail because of some stupid reason. Still this is a great day! brb pre-ordering
Not sure I would consider this game a good PR move at this point (several months maybe a year ago would have been great PR) at best they can hope that it negates all the negative PR they have been piling on by ignoring/teasing it.
I'm still going to buy it ^^ but Nintendo as a whole has dropped a notch or two on my respect-O-meter..... which eventually leads strait to the ShopElsewhere-O-Tron (you can ask EA about that second one)
This news makes it all better.
The Last Story will be in summer-fall 2012, the swan song for the Wii. (very fitting, if a bit on the nose)
It can only be repeated so many times... have patience. This news alone should be enough to reinvigorate a bit of faith in Nintendo from all of us. They aren't totally deaf and blind. Get Xenoblade, even though understandably it's not the one you were most interested in (though I think you'll enjoy it! it certainly surprised me) and continue supporting Operation Rainfall, and watch how The Last Story does in Europe when it comes out.
Anyway, time to set aside $50 for April!

I don't mean to say that at all. Several people involved were absolutely cool about it. Unfortunately, several more decided to go with threats instead, and made a big deal of boycotts and that kind of thing, which I'd really rather we didn't encourage.
I think for those that handled things well, simply getting the game (and hopefully the other two) should be enough. No accolades should be needed. The rest, the ones that would probably expect the credit, shouldn't get any.

If you like JRPGs, a la Final Fantasy, Tales, etc, yes.
You'll also be able to play games like Mario and Zelda, so it's not like Xenoblade is the only game worth owning a Wii for.
You're making the assumption that Nintendo always was planning to release it and that the fan campaign had nothing to do with this.
causing Nintendo not to bring over the next big niche game
thus creating another bitch fest about Nintendo doesn't care about gamers
So, +1 sale, right there NOA.
as people have pointed out already, these types of games tend to do better in America than they do in Japan anyway. If a significant number or sales are lost to pirated copies, that's a little nintendo's fault for handling this so badly (not that I'm trying to justify piracy.)
Now Last Story and Pandora's Tower just need to come here and Nintendo will be the cool kid again. Maybe.
Buy it, seriously. It's one of the best JRPGs of all time.
