Xbox Micro makes you wonder why the Xbox was so big (Update) photo

Remember when the Xbox landed? It was the biggest console you'd ever seen. The thing looked like they could build sturdy houses in third world countries out of it. I had always just assumed that it was that big because it had big parts in it, but evidently the size was simply Microsoft showing off its big American penis. A modder has created the Xbox Micro, which makes the Wii look like its King Kong.

The Micro basically has every part of the Xbox crammed deep inside it. You can see some exposed views of it here and also learn about how it was done. It sure makes the original Xbox look like it fell off the ugly tree, hit every branch that it could and then took a swim in a bath of ugly acid before drying off with a towel that made it even uglier. If you attempt to do this at home be forewarned; it took the creators six months to put this together and the machine doesn't run particularly cool, as one would expect. If you head over to the creators post you can find your way to a few other interesting Xbox mods too.

(Update: As a few people in the comments pointed out, there's no disc drive. Games are stored on a hard drive. Still awesome.)

Well, I'm guessing that's why MS didn't make it that small.

Besides what Gamadaya pointed out, I would also say that it's kind of unfair to compare this "XBox Micro" to the original XBox when times have changes the hardware is now cheaper to put together. If this happened around the time of the original XBox's life span, I'd give it more credit.

As for the ugly comment, slimmer and smaller doesn't automatically make something prettier. The original XBox looked much better than the Micro in my opinion. But I acknowledge that the Micro was made for mass production for the market.

Does it still have the same size hard drive?
Either way, the heat is definitely a big reason why they made the Xbox as big as it was.

Still, this thing looks sexy as hell.

That's amazingly cool. I would seriously consider buying a game system like this if it were made available.

Just checked out the info, and I can see why Microsoft didn't make the console like this. There is no disk drive, all of the games are stored on the HDD according to the site.

@phantomile
It's using a 320 GB HD

And much like the 'Xbox mini' from years past it is sans DVD drive, running on emulation.

/Still sexy as hell and an impressive feat of modding.

Making it that small is an achievement - but I don't think it is as easy to mass manufacture as a normal sized xbox, and if it doesn't cool as efficiently then it is less reliable.

Plus, size matters. At least in the US market, where big cars and big burgers sell. Selling a small xbox would have made some Americans think it was underpowered or bad. Hey, that's the way the US market works.

the reason the original xbox was big was because it pretty much used off the shelf computer parts. Everything was full size, optical drive, hdd, mobo. Granted it was custom but making it smaller would have been more expensive for Microsoft.

It's harder to kill home intruders with the smaller one.

Two ports ? Seems like a smaller (which is nice in this case) but shittier version of the xbox. But the real question is...

Can it get the Red Ring ?

Matthew Razak, you do realize that the original Xbox came out in 2001 and that technology has advanced in 8 years. That's the reason they couldn't make a thin Xbox in 2001. You act like the designers in 2001, had the same smaller computer parts we have today.

@Dexter345:
That looks to be it for USB. It would be really cool if they incorporated the Windows Xbox 360 wireless controller receiver into the design.

actually they could do something like this to the 360 IF they wanted. Have you ever seen whats inside a 360? mostly unused space. 360's main board is really thin, if they used a slot loading drive like the one you find on Apple notebooks then you could easily do it. Of course microsoft would need to put some money on building quality improvement, the way 360's are build today is a real shame.

@ roriginal: A big heat sink is NOT the same thing as "unused space".

If they made the 360 any smaller, it would just overheat and fail that much more frequently.

The original Xbox had the power supply build inside the unit, this took up a good 1/3 of the system. The Xbox Micro has an external power supply, similar to the Wii and Xbox 360.

that looks cool, but even within the gaming world there are bigger problems to solve than shrinking the form factor on a long dead console...people with too much time on their hands.

The 'American Penis' bit made laugh. Cool little bit of Modding he's done. Can't see the image though because of crappy photobucket's bandwidth expiring. Anyway, the heat in the old one made it crash... how is better then?

Why would it even need a disc drive? I'd much rather run my things off the hard drive assuming the performance is just as good (though I suspect loading will be faster from HDD).
