Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program invites sent photo

We’re about a day or so behind, but know this: Major Nelson says the first wave of Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program invites were blasted to e-mail inboxes in the recent past. Those of you who bothered with registering on the Microsoft Connect Web site may or may not have an invitation waiting, but if you do, you’ll be able to join in on the Twitter and Facebook fun with the rest of the privileged world.

Just don’t expect to get a taste of Halo Waypoint until next week.

Unlike the last update, Nelson didn’t specify if Microsoft was still taking applications for the Preview Program process, but it wouldn’t hurt to fiddle with Connect to see if registration is still open if you’re really hot to tweet as hard as Brad Nicholson does from the NXE dashboard.

Confused? Live under a rock? Hit up our video tour of this upcoming update.

I got my preview update last night and it's pretty neat... nice to peruse FB on the 360. However, it froze my console when I went to go look at a friend's photos. Eh. Maybe a fluke, maybe a problem... we'll see.

I am in. But I don't like it. :/

I thought Twitter would be possible ingame but it only works as long as the Twitter-App(?) is open .. would have loved to see little pop ups whenever a new tweet comes in.

Since I don't use Facebook and I don't like movie streaming/renting (dvds > download) I can't say anything about that.

Yes, hopefully after a bit of exsposure these apps will be expanded upon. As is I'd rather just use my PC for them.

Last.fm is the best thing about the update, and that's not even great. It's an app, and can't play music in-game. Facebook was really slow for me, and takes too much effort to see everyone's statuses (this is a negative thing, since a lot of people on my friends list often post what they're eating and other useless shit).
Twitter wouldn't open, because I had used up my free time on it. You have to be gold (around £35 a year) to use these apps, which are free on any computer, phone, or even Playstation 3. Very disappointing.

I got my update. Facebook and Twitter are a hassle if you don't have the chatpad, which means I'll mostly avoid them. However, having never used Last.fm before, I think it's fantastic. Definitely the part of the update that will be getting the most use for me.

It's interesting that The 360 is taking an iPhone-like App approach to all this extra content. I'm a little surprised the last.fm app can't run in the background. That would've been nice. I'm a little glad that twitter is limited, though. That could get annoying fast.

Does everyone who applies get in early? I got this one and the last. Am I lucky? Do I have a weird setup they want tested? Or is all this mostly a publicity stunt to build hype?

I got the update but no email. So far I've listened used Last.FM the most, though it feels weird listening to Wind Waker music through an xbox.

Last.fm is fine, but I really wish they'd gone with Pandora. I thinks it's a superior service. But I can run Pandora in the PS3 browser so it's all good.

I got in as well and I guess its OK, but I don't really see any major changes to it yet. This might just be a Canadian thing, but I couldn't find Last.FM anywhere, so maybe we just don't get it here in Canada. The FaceBook is basically a separate program that you have to download and go into it. Seems a bit stupid, but whatever. The main menu is a bit unorganized now, as its getting too cluttered.

Last.FM on Xbox 360 is not available up here in the Great White North. The Facebook application is bare bones but i actually like the simplicity of it because i despise all of the extra crap applications. The twitter client is very very poor. any free Twitter Iphone app or Twitter client running on any other electronic device is superior to this piece of crap. (As a sidebar...great...Facebook just hard locked my 360 as i am typing this)
The biggest flaw is that the Twitter app has to be run as a stand alone program. It cannot run in the background on the 360. You cannot send or receive tweets if you are not running the Twitter program. This thing should be constantly running in the background and updating you (user preference of course) on the fly no matter if you are playing a game, using ANY of the dashboard functions or watching a Blu-Ra.....never mind i meant DVD or HD-DVD(epic fail) movie.

The fact that it does not run in the background is IMO a deal breaking flaw. Not to mention the fact that my options are limited to "reply" "retweet" "<user> profile" and "favorite this tweet" I haven't been able to figure out how to direct message someone and clicking on links is of course impossible. Hell at least my 5 year old cell phone can save macros so i can at least send direct tweets to people. You can of course update your status and search the tweets and also browse trending topics but the major limitations far outweigh the positives. This update just makes the "NXE" even more cluttered than it already is. I encourage all present and future interface design artists to study the NXE as a prime example of what NOT to do.

Sorry everyone but this really is a half-assed update. sure it adds facebook, twitter and zune but it does everything so poorly that you can get more functionality from a cell phone.
