Xbox Live Starter Pack too awesome for words photo

Many Xbox Live Arcade owners are stuck in a rut. The console doesn’t come with a hard drive, which means demos and large trailers are out of the question. Secondly, owners apparently don’t have access to Xbox Live – which almost invalidates their purchase of console, doesn’t it? In response to this, Microsoft is tossing out an Xbox Live Starter Pack, designed to fit all the needs of an Xbox owner wanting to get in on this whole Internet "thing."

The listing for the kit is over at Gamestop. It will contain a 60GB hard drive, wired headset, Ethernet cable, and a three-month gold card for Xbox Live all for the low, low price of $99.

The Starter Pack can also be seen as a preparation item for the New Xbox Experience, which Nick had the awesome opportunity to check out. As we mentioned previously, NXE will require 128MB of memory and will need the Internet for the cool stuff like streaming Netflix movies. While 128MB is substantially less than 60GB, it’s always nice to have some extra space to throw around.

AHH too much money...

Is there no transfer kit in this package? I have a 20gb filling up faaassst, and with the installation feature on the horizon a larger hard drive would come in handy.

Based on the picture on the gamestop site, it looks like there is a transfer kit.

I wish they had announced this earlier. I just bought a 120GB hard drive about 2 weeks ago. Of course I can't return it anymore, but I think I'm going to like the extra space when I can start installing games on my hard drive, not to mention the netflix.

Honestly though, these prices are still way too high. I paid for the 120GB because I wanted the space and it was my only choice, but that's a pretty big markup on such a small hard drive.

While the deal is better than just the 20GB for $99, "too awesome for words" it's just a bit over the top description for a 60GB, lan cable, old headset and 3 months of LIVE!. Add an XBLA game or $10off something and deal will show value then maybe, just maybe we could call it "pretty neat".

I want storage but I don't want to be raped in the butt to get it.

Well, I might finally be getting a bigger hard drive then...

This is a great "upgrade" kit for those thousands of people unfortunate enough to buy/receive the Arcade unit.

The noise about the RRoD has gone down, so is it finally "safe" to purchase an Xbox 360? They are dirt cheap for all of the entertainment you can get, but having to send my console in for repairs/replacement 2-3 times over its lifetime has made me not even consider getting one.

Definitely not too awesome for words. A better way to describe this is "Not a bad deal".

This is good for me, I'm running out of the 20GB and 120 is too much when I can't get movies.

Seems a little high. I just upgraded my PS3 with a 300 GB internal SATA for $80. 240 more GB, plus I don't have to deal with the clutter of an external drive - makes this deal seem a little flat to me. Couldn't they lower it a little?

Ugh, better than $99 for just a 20GB... but I'd like to see them through a 60GB out there ($50 would be somewhat fair, but I guess I'd settle for $70 by M$ standards) by itself (since I already have 13 months of Live left, a wireless headset, and about 5 Ethernet cables lying around.

Hrm...this is a pretty decent deal...

You could buy the arcade bundle and this for the same price as the 60gb bundle.

What do you get if you buy one or the other?

This is pretty cool, I guess. It's still pretty expensive for 60GB HDD. I mean, all it's only a laoptop hard drive.

@ nukka jdav

If it doesn't come with a transfer cable, you can get one for free from Microsoft by mail.

I need a new headset, my 20GB HD is full, and 3 months of xbox live is nothing to scoff at

I have a 120 GB hard drive on my Elite and I am scared of filling that thing up, haha.

If I had anticipated the whole "rip a game to your hard drive" thing, I might have gotten an Elite back when I picked my 360 up... I've only got like four gigs left on my 20 gig hard drive. =(

Yeah, that's still way too much money. Maybe if they charged like $45 for a 60 gig hard drive, like you can get for any platform other than the 360, it'd be better.

I really am wanting that 120GB HDD. The install feature might worth it for some games.

Definitely a step in the right direction.
I'm definitely gonna look into this, though lack of a transfer cable might be a deal breaker.

I need to install games, cause Fable is killing me with its load times.

Transfer cables are available from MS for free if you request one.

That's a load of crap. The headset and ethernet cable are worth like, a dollar or two each, so you're left with what, $15 of XBL and an $80 60 GB hard drive?

Unless you're REALLY going to be using the HDD space, it's a better deal to just take the 20 gig HDD for $20 they are offering to Arcade/Core owners.

Every discussion about 360 drives should mention that you can replace a 20 GB with a (specific model of a) Western Digital 120 GB bought off eBay, two Torx screwdrivers and a one-minute firmware hack.

I just think its funny that they have the Arcade Xbox 360 for 200 to try to sell it then if you want to do anything with it, you buy a Starter Pack and then you back at the Regular price for the 360.
