Xbox Live Silver members can get one month of Gold for $1 photo

For a limited time, all Xbox Live Silver members will be able to get a month of Gold for just a $1. Once the month is up though, your subscription will be automatically renewed, but you can cancel the service before that happens. If you don't opt-out, you'll be charged $7.99 a month. That's a horrible rate, as you'll end up paying $96 for 12 months when you can just buy the 12 month subscription to Gold for $50.

You can also just create a new fresh Gamertag and get one month of Xbox Live Gold for free that way. You can do that up to five times last I checked.

Or you can do the smart thing and buy a 13 month code for less than that AND not have to deal with giving Microsoft your CC info.

Or just not get XBL coz' I've barely found any use for it so far...

No use for Xbox live? While I do initialy moan about the yearly charge, for me personally I get value for my £2/3 a month. Well not at the moment as my Xbox has died but that's another story and I'll just get upset :P

As for this story, $1 for a trial - good, the cost of subsequent months - bad. I don't know what 96 dollars is to pounds at the moment but either way it seems like a blatant rip-off.

Hey, I got the £1 trial yesterday. I haven't renewed my yearly sub since Xmas, and I haven't really missed it as yet, but I'll take a month for a £1, no issue.

Wow, this is oddly convenient as my gold subscription ends in just 1 week...

Make it free = Win "console war".

It's about as simple as that Microsoft.
They've got more money than Sony probably ever will. And it'd negate the whole "PSN is free" argument.

This is coming from a Sony fan too.

How do you cancel Xbox Live subscription?

@BlackFreefall
You in the UK or not? I cancelled mine when they wouldn't repair my last 360, going through this number - 0800 587 1102.
Not sure if your not UK though

Are you kidding? They didn't say anything about charging me subsequent months when I bought the month last night. I'll have to see if I can remove my CC information, thats bullshit.

@Aurain

2 reason why that won't happen

1 they aren't as rich as people believe.

Ms was sitting at 160th place of the top richest companies but being in the center of the ressesion things have gone downhill, add in the value of a sunken dollar and I wouldn't. Be surprised if they were knoked back to around 200, sony however is still in the top 100 (85th I believe).

2 a lot of the 360 profits are from xbl fees.

Their hardware is barely profitable, and thanks to the rrod free repairs (around 10 mil I believe) and the debt from the old xbox (around 5 mil) most profits from hardware are negated.xbl fees are the lifeblood of the 360, getting rid of them would cripple most of the 360s finacial resources, and sony would surely take advantage of that should they ever be given the opportunity.

I was going to sign up to this in the UK. I think it's like £3.45 or something per month after the first month. I couldn't get it though as I don't have a credit card and the website wouldn't accept my Maestro card.

This seems like a scam just to rake in money from people who don't know you need to cancel or forget to cancel. Seems pretty shady to me.

What Turbofail said.

Also I cancelled my subscription yesterday ; why the hell do we need to call those fucks for that; Stupid.

But I did get an acceptable service in french which is pretty unusual coming from Microsoft.

They should really just make live free. Or add more features to Silver (like online gameplay), lower Gold's price and make it tied to XBLA specials, exclusive demos, free avatar clothing, etc. Like a "VIP" pass for live, for like $1 a month or something.
Seriously I'd think that would be the best option. Then if I wanted that cool stuff (which I might or might not), I could buy it. If I didn't, I could stick with Silver and still play Crackdown co-op.

Seems like a little bit of a trap to get people into paying MS for Xbox Live.

Also,

"you're subscription will be automatically renewed"

should be

"your subscription will be automatically renewed"

If they made canceling the service easier, I'd have Xbox Live. Occasionally a game comes out that I want to play online, so it'd be nice to fork over the $7, play that game for a month, then cancel. I do it with MMO's, I do it with services like Fileplanet, why can't I do this with Xbox Live.

Instead of just canceling, you have to call customer service, wait on hold for a half-hour, give them all of your account information over the phone, and give a legitimate explanation for canceling. I think the main reason so many people have Xbox Live is because getting rid of the damn this is such a pain in the ass.

Give me a nice easy way to cancel it from the account management page and I'll join your service, until then... I'll enjoy free-to-play multiplayer on the PC and PS3.

It is also condemning that the subscription is impossible to cancel on an xbox 360 or xbox.com. I should really cancel it and go back to redeeming codes...

Another MS scam

"how many people will buy this then forget to cancel?" - "We could make a few extra million before people have even realised!"

Nice to be treated like a brainless cash cow by the company you keep paying for console after RRoD'd console after E74'd console.

@Sexual Chocolate - I actually agree with the second paragraph. Cancelling your Gold account is a pain in the ass if you're paying monthly (like me).
But why did you bring up the RROD and E74 issue into this. This post is about Live, not the console.
I swear Mr. Chocolate, me and you will be friends one day!
