Xbox Live party chat blocked in Modern Warfare 2? photo

If you were looking forward to a big Xbox Live party when Modern Warfare 2 launches, it seems that Skype may be your best friend. It's being reported that Infinity Ward's FPS sequel will block Xbox 360 parties, meaning that you and your friends will have to be on the same team in order to chat.

The reason behind this is obvious. It's to avoid cheating. Players on both sides won't be able to team up in a party and work together to bring one of the teams down. It's not been confirmed whether this is mandatory across all multiplayer sessions, or an option that can be toggled for certain game types.

Hopefully it's just an option. Party Chat makes for some highly memorable Destructoid community multiplayer matches, especially when you have both teams in the same chat.

Didn't IW, after saying no dedicated servers, say something to the effect of 'matchmaking is good cause then you can join your friends in a party and go from game to game opposed to having to get everyone to join the same server'.

Kinda destorys that.

Some of my best experiences involve playfully trash talking my friends on the other team. I hope this is, as you said, just an option.

That wont be any fun. But not cause i want to mess with other players, but cause most of my friends hate the COD games and dont play them but if we are all on we like to chat even if we arent playing the same game.

I guess its good to avoid cheating but no party chat at all, there has to be another solution.

this is fucking bullshit...again. IW seem to have saved all of the shit news about MW2 to slip out un-noticed just before release.

This completely destroys all the current fun I have playing with friends in cod4, i mean i sometimes join the other team and mess around but mostly use party chat to get other friends to join up during a gaming session.

Fairly sure that this was for specific playlists like Search & Destroy where cheating is common due to that feature. Team Deatmatch is fine.
Since the inclusion of Party Chat all I've heard from both Gears and COD players is how it leads to so much bullshit.
They've been asking for this since it came out.

Hahahahahaha.
Hahaha.
Ha.

Infinity Ward are fucking idiots. Fucking up the 360 AND the PC versions by removing features deliberately? Something smells up to me.

Awesome journalism! Misleading titles rock and 8/9 people who commented before me didn't seem to read the whole 3 paragraphs. Please, keep adding to the hype and controversy on this shit eating title that I wish they release ASAP so it can stop jumping out of tin cans!

I don't like Party Chat.

Stops everyone from communicating in game as they are too busy talking to their friends (wait.... that sounds odd).

Also if your in a Party Chat trying to play a different game from the other people in the chat it becomes extremely annoying.

IW should worry we don't all buy L4D2 instead.

And I am almost sure I heard about this only being for S&D type games, not deathmatches.

I know plenty of people that love party chat but hate it just as much because of all the cheating. I personally don't care at all and find the cheating adds a bit of fun to the chat when I'm screaming at my friends that someone's around the corner or a grenade was throw near them xD

I bet IW chose to do this because of fan request. That's just my guess.

That's crazy.

I highly doubt that there are enough cases of people cheating through party chat to warrant that being the reason to take it out of multiplayer games. After all, for FNF's and even just regular nights, it's not uncommon to have a lot of people playing one game together.

Something reeks of stupid here.

I wish they would do this for more games, like Gears of War 2. I wish it would just automatically switch your party to game chat as soon as a ranked match starts, then switch you back when it's done.

In my experiece, Xbox live parties function specifically because the people on your team are irritating kids that use profanity as the default response to anything that occurs. Half the point is to avoid talking to your team-mates. I'm sorry, but cheating through the power of teamwork does not outweigh the fact that I would rather talk to people I know over xbox live than people I don't know.

Dear Infinity Ward, you are making a game for consumers first and an absolutely competitive battlefield with a thought-provoking story second. Stop trying to tear me away from my friends by getting rid of things like co-op and party chat. I like Halo BECAUSE it is the best social game, and I would greatly appreciate it if you guys would stop trying to remove the social elements of your game, as the less social CoD: MW2 becomes, the more I am forced to play Halo instead.

I thought parties let you join the game on the same team, specifically. How does this prevent cheating if everyone's on the same team? Also, although rare, there ARE the annoying little kids that whine and moan about how superior they are to you even though most of the time they're doing worse. Parties are nice that way.

The parties dont always put you on the same team. I logged on after my friends, then joined their party. Then i joined the game and it stuck me on the other team.

When it was originally reported on the NEOGAF FORUMS it said SOME PLAYLISTS. I'm thinking its not for the whole game just some of the more intensive playlists. Just wait for Activision to make a comment on it.

So you're saying that on the PC version, people on Teamspeak/Ventrilo playing together on a server, stacking a side is basically cheating? Your logic fails miserably.

Also, IW fails hard, once again. This definitely bring about the fall of this company.

I was actually curious if they were going to address this. Party Chat basically breaks Search & Destroy, where you can give your living teammates pointers about enemy positions from beyond the grave.

I will say that I would expect custom matches to make this optional, but I personally will not miss XBL party chat in this game. The in-game chat is sufficient, and the game is designed around it.

Hmm. Maybe I overreacted last post.

This is a bad thing, whatever way you look at it, since for starters it's idiotic that people in the same party should be split up, unless it's a majority (9/16 players) but I doubt many people go into MM with 9+ people parties. Since this is essentially attempting to prevent people talking in parties, it's just stupid that they're using this to avoid fixing the problem of team stacking. I mean hell, there's death streaks now so I would have thought the playing field would be more balanced in MW2.

However. This isn't going to stop anyone buying the game, and it will annoy the minority. It's only on the blogs etc people will complain, and it's not necessarily about the lack of party chat, it's just about the removal of a feature of the console which isn't that important to 99% of the userbase.

Of course, I'm going to put in my mandatory speech about Dedicated Servers on the PC version, the fact that they tried similar restrictions there and it's really biting them in the arse.

I will semi-agree with what Dexter said, with the caveat that if they are going to do this, they need to carry over the in-game mute feature to the LOBBIES. It's simple to mute in game, but it does no good if, as soon as we're back in the lobby, I'm subjected to some 12 year-old white kid gansta rapping and a chorus of potheads with a limmited vocabulary and impulse control issues. Seriously.

How serious is Modern Warfare multiplayer? Isn't it common consensus that the game is imbalanced anyway? I don't think party chat will make any difference. Doesn't matter to me, I guess.

@Blasto: Modern Warfare tends to attract racist conservatives more than 12 year olds.
