Xbox Live melts under CoD 4 map pack assault, is OK now photo

Microsoft is one of those companies that doesn't seem to be able to find that middle ground that other businesses take for granted. You either love them, or you hate them -- there is no in between. Lately, it's been especially hard for the software giant, with negative Xbox 360 news cropping up with increasing frequency.

By now, most Xbox 360 owners have either already experienced the disappointment of the highly publicized hardware failures. It's been an expensive undertaking, but Microsoft has somehow conditioned convinced most of its loyal customers that everything is going to be all right, even when gaming forums and the Internet in general seem to say otherwise.

The Xbox 360 is an amazing device when it works, and overall, is worthy of the praise by most accounts. Unfortunately, the 360's hardware isn't the only gremlin that's been chipping away at Microsoft's already battered image. This time, Microsoft's ace in the hole -- Xbox Live --  is the source of suffering.

More on this, after the jump:

It kind of seems strange that a software giant such as Microsoft would underestimate the potential demands that new items such as map packs can place on servers, but it looks like that may have been the case with the recent release of the variety map pack for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Gamers pounced on the map pack en masse, and in the process pretty much brought Xbox Live to a screeching halt.

Some gamers were met with various connection errors on Live, redeeming Microsoft Points became impossible for others, and it wasn't long before general discord towards the paid-for service began to show up in forums and blogs (including our own). Still stinging from the last outage that lasted for the better part of a month, some Xbox 360 owners have started questioning if they are indeed getting that high level of service that they are paying for.

Overall, I'd have to say a resounding yes to that. This is the second embarrassing outage that Microsoft has had to deal with in recent memory, but as a whole, the service does seem to be pretty stable. Paid service or not, we have to come to terms with the fact that there will always be times where a loss of service is going to be a reality. Contrary to popular belief on the Internet, the 100% uptime rule is a myth. Much like your cable and telephone services, outages are to be expected from time to time.

Even so, Microsoft would do well to do a better job of forecasting potential disruptions, especially during times (like new maps for popular games are released) when common sense dictates that the current server load is going to spike to abnormal levels. In turn, they would be dodging the potential grief that big names like Microsoft have committees steered towards quieting in the first place.

The good news is that Xbox Live has recovered from the physical beating it took as a result from being unprepared for the surge in demand of its service. The bad news is that the anti-Xbox 360 crowd has probably recruited a few more people as a result -- some of the same people that have been defending it tooth and nail since bad news first descended upon the console in the first place. With the PlayStation 3 gaining favor with gamers with each passing day, and with a relatively stable online structure of its own in place for free -- this isn't exactly a good time for Microsoft to continue to drop the ball.

I just hope Sony is keeping a close eye on this, and takes the necessary steps to ensure that PS3 owners don't suffer a similar fate when their CoD 4 map pack finally arrives.

I can't see it but totally agree with you.

Likely MS weighed the pros and cons and probably decided that a day or two of bitching was a lot cheaper than the cost of making sure the service felt no degradation during the weekend. After all how many people who have been upset (even slightly) by this plan to abandon the service? I'd be shocked if it was a number worth mentioning. If systems cooking themselves couldn't do it this definitely will not. And Microsoft knows that.

Shit happens. If you're really that upset that you can't play for a day, sue Microsoft for the dime's worth of your service that you missed out on.

Stop crying and play something else for while.

Also, @ fanboys:

An extra-special STFUAJPG to you.

I lold. Every computer I've had needed to be completely restored at least twice, and on two separate occasions I've had a motherboard fry and a hard drive failure. This hjunk of crap right here lags at Cave Story and cant run audiosurf.
Though these problems may be because were not rich enough to buy the 10,000 dollar Ailenware quadcore pentium ultimate machines.

@Ichigo

lol, you just added more to my point to prove how different the two services are. WoW runs on many different servers so if there is unscheduled downtime then it's at least an isolated incident. Meaning the players can simply choose to play on a different server when their first choice is down. Live's servers are all inner twined so if one goes down they all go with it. Don't give me crap about not doing my research when everything I stated is valid.

Yes, you're right Live has had scheduled downtime. Sorry if I happened to forget about that.

The difference with Live and all those other services is, as others have said, if the other services go down then they apologize immediately and begin working to fix it, MS however seems to (imo) simply wait it out.

Shit happens, if you've played any mmo, or used any online service you know there will be downtimes. An example was when I played WOW, our guild would never raid on tuesdays, why? Because that was patch day when blizzard released a patch. It would mess up everyones addons, cause server lag, people had issues downloading it, you know all that shit. So when a map pack/big addon comes out for a very popular game EXPECT the service to be very slow or down for a while. Just relax, take a deep breath, and if you are having issues come back to it later and go do something else. You know have an actual face to face human interaction with your real life friends, if you have any, online only friends don't count.

Throwing a hissy fit when something like this happens makes you look like a whiney bitch. Deny it all you like, its what you look like to everyone else.

Well, I used to be a proud owner of a Xbox 360. But what happend on Christmas was total and complete BS. One week, ok, that's sort of understandable. Two weeks, well ok maybe the are trying to get the problem fixed. Third week, they just don't give a damn. Then I think to myself, well maybe they will give us something to compensate for the down time. And what does good ole money hungry Microsoft do? Give us a crappy arcade game that is only available for download for a limited time. Are you freakin serious. How about some free XBL time, say a month (the amount of time that XBL was actually down). Since then I have sold my Xbox 360 on ebay and used that money to get my PS3. And I love every min. of it. I esp. love the part when I can change out my hard drive from a 40 GB to a 320 GB for under 130 bucks. Of course if I were to try and do the same with an Xbox 360, no such luck. Basically because a 320 GB hard drive does not exsist and their hard drive is a proprietary. Meaning you cannot use it for anything other than the XBox 360. And that's gonna cost you about 180 bucks to upgrade. Well, I'm tired of giving Bill Gates money. See ya Xbox, keep screwing other people over but I will have no more of it.

Just bought 6 new games from PSN and now I have a total of 43 games and demos I play back and forth. One year from now Im sure I will have probably triple from what I have now. So having the most games in a console is not the object, all 3 consoles will have a nice gaming library.

What we can't have is faulty hardware, shitty connections, crappy service or messed up games. Whichever any of these happens to you, make sure you bitch them out till they fix it. It's your money, you payed for it, now they have to deliver it. If you don't do anything, they will just rape your wallet if you don't bitch.

Imagine if the kid (with the rare EPIC 360 signed console) didn't bitch about it on the web, you think EPIC or MS would have done what they did if he just stfu?

I haven't played WoW myself, but from all the MMO's I've played, when I get disconnected, I immediately try to reconnect to see whether my server is up. I then check its message boards for announcements from the admins. This rarely happens, but most of the time, the service is back up after a few minutes.

Server strain is all too common. When a huge update comes, expect a large surge of players trying to access the network at the same time. Let me use RF Online (Philippine service, cuz I live there) as an example. Whenever new play mechanics are introduced, a large update naturally follows. Some players go as far as downloading the updates in advance, then repatching the game so that the launcher.exe file is updated for the Philippine Servers. There is a weekly scheduled maintenance every tuesday morning that lasts until the afternoon.

Even with these precautions, we still experience sudden downtimes. BUT, there are announcements in the messageboards when these things happen.

Wow, there has been a lot of crying over this downtime on a FRIDAY. Get out there and do something that doesn't involve you being alone and crying in your bedroom.

To Teh_Zombs: Well, it's just nice to have the space at your disposal. Like "Crunshii" said, I can now download games to my hard drive and not to mention divix and mpeg movies. I have also started to transfer my music from my desktop to my PS3 hard drive as well.

Bah, this is what 360 users get for collectively telling companies that a pack 4 new maps is worth tens of thousands, if not more. Come on - they don't even look like they have any new graphical assets to justify the price. Probably took them a few days to draw up and test at the most.

Think I'll stick to playing CoD4 online on my PC, seems like MS have got people nicely duped into thinking being ripped off is great with their no user made content rules.

And again. No one would really complain about the PSN going down because its free.

People expect things to work when they pay for the service.

Think of it this way:

When you go to a theater and you pay for a ticket (like 5-10 dollars a ticket.) to see a movie and you suddenly see the frame stop and catch on fire what do you do?

"Oh it caught on fire. I'll just come back at another time and watch it from the start again wasting another 5-10 bucks."

No one would say that. (Unless you are a rich ***ch!)

You would walk up to a manager in either a mad or happy mood (depending on if you spent the money to watch it or not) and request compensation for the time and money spent.

Thats just one screen out of the 16 or 24 they have. They can deal with that loss.

But XBL is different because all the servers are linked to each other.

Simulating an XBL downtime is like the theater having a power outage.
Everyone is afected.

Now if they were watching the movie for free they wouldn't care too much now would they?

sorry to say to the MS fanboys but PSN is coming up pretty well on its own. It is frustrating to see a big company (that had the foresight for windows) loose sight of what the potential impact of releasing X to the masses. Especially when X is an addition to a very popular product. I should get that type of "consumer comfort" when I pay for it. I'm not saying Xbox live is bad for this incident, I works fantastic, BUT little gliches like this make me question why I HAVE to pay for the service.

gamers can be unreasonable...no one cries when TV is out for a couple of hours...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I used to work in cable customer service. People would call up screaming at me that their fucking cable had been out for 5 minutes. Most times it would come back on while I was looking up their account. Now, reasonable me and people that don't give a fuck about TV like me, would wait an hour or two and then call. But idiot-tv-watching-america calls within 1 minute of their tv service going out, and then demands credit for the time it was out, which could amount to fractions of a penny.

If the console gamers on here are any indication, they certainly are NOT ready for an MMO on the console and should stay away from PC Gaming.

I'll say it again. I've had more outages with WoW (including WoW's Tuesday cluster-f of a weekly patch taking the system down for 5-8 hours) than I have with XBL. WoW doesn't give out free games, why should XBL?
