To clarify a bit, Fortresscraft is not just $1 for the ability to roam around. He's planning on releasing multiple "chapters" for $1 each, that expand upon the regular Minecraft "build stuff" mechanic. When all is said and done, he's claiming a few really cool things, like crafting, combat, and quests - basically more than what Minecraft is planning to offer even after beta.
No doubt this won't make a lot of money, and will be overshadowed by Notch's project, but at the very worst, it'll light some fire under Notch to up Minecraft's gameplay variety.
i love minecraft and to have a reasonable facsimile of it on my 360 is enough to get me to plunk down a buck.
Good lord, it's like 99% of the people that use the Indie bit of the XBLA are incapable of even a vaguely original idea.
To play the Devil's Advocate though, Infiniminer was already very different from Minecraft in that it was a team based player versus player focused game about harvesting and flooding enemy mines. And when Minecraft was started Infiniminer was already defunct and its source code freely released.
Agreed. Notch did nothing wrong - I just wanted to state that the idea of Minecraft was not wholly original. With the amount of fervor the title's fans have, a lot of people probably glossed that over. Regardless of the point of inception, Minecraft is fun, and Notch's success story is inspiring.
I say as I play Minecraft at work.
It's like i said in a previous post. That boy just doesn't put any effort into it. Annoying AND lazy
I know he's aiming for a combination of Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress, but the fact is he's just trying to cash in on Notch's success. Also, I believe he's going to fail greatly as combining the two games, but that's just my opinion.
The whole thing feels douchey all the way through. Minecraft might not be original, but Notch took up the idea when the guy behind Infiniminer let the concept die (a hugely different concept regardless).
I guess I must not have read things correctly many moons ago when I looked, but I thought the plan was for Minecraft to have some of these elements down the road (not to mention, uh, it's not like Minecraft doesn't have combat or crafting in it). *shrug*

People need to chill the fuck out. I'm buying 10 copies just to piss off all the Minecraft-only fanboys.
"If you need to write ten paragraphs on how your game isn't a clone of Minecraft, it's a clone of Minecraft."
As for the originality thing - maybe not the most original, but neither was Minecraft (as others have noted) and as long as it isn't a direct clone I don't see a huge problem. I guess.
Other example: Dead Space and Resident Evil 4.
This game, however, is EXACTLY like Minecraft. Just look at the damn video. It's Minecraft, totally dried out of charm.
Beside's, he totally stole the name from a starcraftII mod:

If you're talking about Gerbil Physics, it came before Angry Birds -- and they are both rip offs of other early video games, anyway.
Neither of those titles are original. Angry Birds was simply marketed very well and somehow went viral.
There is literally nothing in the 'episode 1' thing that isn't in Minecraft.
For those saying Minecraft 'isn't original' because of Infiniminer, you obviously never played Infiniminer - it was basically Team Fortress 2 with blocks.
1) Notch himself said he drew upon Infiniminer. I'm not really in the position to say "he didn't", when he said he did.
2) As I said, Episode 1 will have similar themes with Minecraft. However, future episodes apparently will have more.
3) It's $1.
$10 says that if Minecraft comes to Ps3 first thing Jayson will say is "Of course it will be on the Ps3 the superior "open" platform"
And ps3 Fanboys will say Mwhaha "this is what xbot fans get for getting the crap copy of it O_O"
Then Epic Will say this to jayson "Jayson STFU~! *insert more expletives*
What I'm saying is that he could've made a clone that at least looked different and nobody would've cared (Hell, Uncharted 2 is one of the best games this generation and it's pretty much copy + paste for all it's gameplay elements), but the fact that the visuals are that similar just seems he wanted to cash-in on Minecraft's success. Whether he differentiates it through future updates using gameplay tweaks is different, though.
All I'm saying is that the visuals should've been changed up is all. He would've avoided like 90% of the flak he's getting just doing that alone. Best of luck to him though, I would imagine there are tons of console gamers eager to try something Minecraft-esque.
you know, that $1? Turns into more when you realize you'll need a gold membership to play this thing online. Give me Minecraft. It runs on a macbook, which makes it a portable AND console game.
BRO-FIST
Minecraft + Macbook = WIN!
