Xbox Live hits 6 million-member mark; Halo kid makes other Halo kid cry photo

Xbox Live is known for a few things: It's a great service that lets you keep track of your friends, has a relatively solid performance level and of course, has built-in voice support. And, how can we forget, it's one of the best places to hear how much of a homosexual you are. Well, now Xbox Live can be known for something else: It has 6 million members.

In fact, Microsoft is so proud of this that they sent out a release this morning touting the fact that they reached the mark months ahead of schedule. From the hand that patted the back:

At E3 this past year, Microsoft announced the goal that the Xbox LIVE community would be 6 million members strong by June 2007. We underestimated how fast gamers would discover that the real joy of next-generation gaming is online.

Microsoft is proud to announce today that more than 6 million gamers worldwide are connected to Xbox LIVE, a milestone that was reached 4 months ahead of schedule. Xbox LIVE, the premier online entertainment network, offers the best in online gaming, ubiquitous voice, video and text chatting, Achievements, demos, trailers and more.

Now, we're not for sure this means 6 million total with Silver included, because the press release never specifies. But, we're gonna guess they mean Gold membership. Either way, good job?

And, with Xbox LIVE Video Marketplace, gamers can download thousands of hours of premium entertainment content, from high-def TV shows like “CSI” or “Robot Chicken,” to full-length films such as “Saw III” or “Crank.” And, as announced this past week, Xbox LIVE members can download the first ever HD episode of “South Park,” exclusive to the Xbox 360 and available free starting today, March 6.

Below you will find the latest in Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE momentum data, including how many Achievements have been unlocked to-date and the top 5 Xbox LIVE Arcade list.

I heard that some people have multiple XBoxLive accounts...did they count how many were listed or how many active cause I remember last time they made an announcement but they didn't include Silver/Gold numbers and someone said every 360 comes with a Silver account. Not to mention there are 360 owners who haven't gone online.

I am just cautious...feels awfully similiar to the "ship/sold" of games and systems companies delcare.

Yeah, it's odd they didn't mention that stuff. Either way, 6 mil is a ton.

Is that a regular ton or a short ton?

Will this mean they'll lower the price?

Probably not...

I certainly hope they dont include Silver, because as far as I know, Silver is free and comes with a 360. And thusly, if they counted silver, shouldn't it be at least about 13 mil?

I think they are counting both active Silver and Gold members. If they counted every 360 sold as a LIVE member, the number would be over 10 million.

I also vaguely recall the number of gold members recently reported to be around 2 million.

i can't live without Xbox Live.
i can't even imagine letting it expire
and if they continue with their quality,
i will remain a Xboxlive member as long as they make Xboxes.

as long as they keep pumping out the Hot titles
and not "updating" like Gears of war where you can't see your friends/host, i'm happy.
halo 2's setup should be the default setup for FPS.

fuk sony!!!.....well for now...

I had no idea I was a black man who sucked on male genitalia until I joined up on XBL. It was only then that I discovered my roots, my sexual identity, and most importantly, the mute button.

I'm willing to bet that the number represents both silver and gold members. From upon high, we the gaming elite, presume that everyone one has high-speed internets available to them, but there ar eloads of people who don't even have *gasp* computers, and therefore no internets. (Poor people are more likely to have a console than a computer). This means that 60% of 360 owners have at some point gone online.. Unless that number is inflated by people with multiple accounts or who, like my girlfriend, never use theirs. This really masks our ability to gauge the success of XBOX live, but makes Microsoft look good... Which is the point of a press release. (If it was gold I'm sure they would point that out... It would be more impressive.)

Please note that I am not being critical of the 360 or Live, both of which are great products.

I bet this includes active original xbox consoles as well. This number should be much higher.

Dude, Summa, nice to know XBL is getting bigger. At least the 6 million mark can give Ninty an idea of what they're missing out on. Hopefully the notice.

Also I made that 'shop I feel special.

I'm pretty sure those are gold accounts. Just take into consideration the quantity of 360s sold, so those numbers would be around 9-10 million since each account has Silver Live! for free.

I can't tell if its silver or gold, companies have ways of phrasing thing to sound slightly better than they actually are, like counting consoles shipped to retailers as total consoles sold. But I'm on the same line as peruvian, I'm addicted to live and download almost every (free) piece of crap from the marketplace.
