Xbox Live getting music game stores, news channels photo

The next Xbox Live update is bringing with it Facebook and Twitter as well as Zune functionality, but according to an email we received from Microsoft regarding next week's preview, there are a few extra little goodies that it was keeping close to its chest.

First of all, music games like Lips, Guitar Hero and Rock Band will be getting their own dedicated stores on the Xbox Live Marketplace, making it even easier to buy Timbaland songs. Brilliant! A brand new channel called "News and More" is also coming. This channel will stream the latest headlines from MSNBC.com, MSN Autos, The New Yorker and Dilbert.

So, looks like all sorts of interesting things are coming with the new update. None of them actually essential or useful, but hey, somebody's going to like it somewhere, right?

Also, donate!

Gee, that is different! What system already has channels!?!! Copying the Wii does not make for a good plan.

I like the music game storefronts, should be things easier to organize.

Not sure why this is necessary, considering all of these games have their own music stores within the game.

Didn't LIVE had channels before the Wii even existed?

I'm waiting for some toad to bitch that they have MSNBC but not Fox. Personally, this pleases me.

What about new servers? At least in Europe Xbox Live is damn slow. Browsing files or anything else takes a loooong time.

Why don't they just put a freaking web browser on there?

Jesus. It's 2009, Microsoft, your console is slightly more complex than a WebTV. It can handle web browsing. Put a browser on there, WITH Flash support.

PLEASE?!

This is desperately trying to paper over the cracks of the New Xbox Experience not actually having a very good UI when handling large numbers of items.

It'd be better to fix that...

"Didn't LIVE had channels before the Wii even existed?"

No it had "Blades" no one called them channels until the Wii's main menu had them. Its not like it matters either way, but it just more "me too" coming from Microsoft. The Wii has a dedicated News Channel, so lets put that up on LIVE as well. Why not just give us a fucking internet browser like the Wii/PS3 has, and be done with it? Why do we need all these stupid separate "channels" of little things on the internet? What's next a freaking YouTube channel?

@brainderailment

Damn that sucks, I imagine they'll have an unscrupulous reason for that.

I don't care what they throw at us, but if they don't allow us to decide what we use it will suck. I don't want to use any of that stuff on my 360, and I'll be damned if I can't hide it.

Though Dilbert comics isn't a half bad idea, they might consider showing a variety of webcomics eventually.

Correction, "unauthorized" memory units. So it'll have to have microsoft's seal of approval. Those 2Gb cards that datel makes, and anyone else makes that are expandable with sd cards or whatever, will be useless.

It better be just news from MSNBC.com and no commentary. The minute I see a video of Keith Olbermann is the minute I call up MS, email Major Nelson, and bitch them out.

They've had a music game section for a while. So if anything this is just a update on that.

I really liked having MSNBC videos on the day of Obama's inauguration, which happened to also be the day that I got my Xbox 360 in the mail. Having MSNBC clips and a dedicated channel for the music games is really nice to have (the latter mainly because they keep congesting the "latest game add-on" channel.) The least Microsoft can do, besides not charging for online in the first place, is to add more feaures to make that yearly subscription look half-fair.

delriego summed it up quite nicely. These updates are most of the time North-America only(not sure what Canadians get). Here in Europe if something ever gets here, it will arrive here on axis UK, France, Germany and possibly Italy and now one else gets anything.
Besides isn't PC better in this kind of stuff anyways?

I approve even if the news outlets in question will probably be shit. MSNBC? Really?

Personally, I enjoy being able to use my PS3 and XBox 360 for things other than games. With PS3 cross game voice chat in the next firmware upgrade, Microsoft needs to do something further to differentiate XBox Live so the company can keep charging people. News channels? Twitter? Facebook? They'll be used by some people (those who feel like moaning that they won't use the features need not reply).

Of course... Twitter integration is easily done - as has been proven by Uncharted 2. The PS3 (and Wii) already have channels of a sort with iPlayer and VidZone. The PS3 also has the movie store coming to the EU in November.

All good news for consumers.

How about they just add some FF and Rewind type playback controls to the existing media player? Those lacking and pretty standard missing features piss me off. Very crappy if you want to jump ahead 5 minutes in a 4 hour MP3.
