According to estimates from Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment (FADE), 2009 was a damn good year for Xbox LIVE Arcade. With more Xbox 360s in players' hands and a number of stellar new digital releases, the service is said to have brought in $103.4 million.
Battlefield 1943 was the real winner here: 800,000 copies sold throughout the year. Even Castle Crashers, which was released in 2008, saw continued success in 2009. FADE estimates 485,000 sales, with total sales since the game's launch falling near the 1,000,000 mark.
Estimated Top Titles by Revenue, 2009 (Average Price):
- Battlefield 1943 (EA Dice) - $12.5 million ($15.00)
- Castle Crashers (The Behemoth) - $7.3 million ($15.00)
- Trials HD (RedLynx, LTD) - $7.1 million ($15.00)
- Shadow Complex (Chair Entertainment / Epic Games) - $6.1 million ($14.38)
- Family Game Night (Hasbro) - $4.2 million ($9.53)
- Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Capcom) - $4.2 million ($15.00)
- Magic: The Gathering (Stainless Games) - $2.8 million ($10.00)
- Worms 2 (Team 17) - $1.8 million ($10.00)
- Peggle (PopCap Games) - $1.8 million ($8.86)
- Turtles in Time: Reshelled (Ubisoft Singapore) - $1.7 million ($10.00)
This reports seems to confirm that even though people like to write off increasing digital download prices as something they won't be involved with, and make such facts evident many times over on the Internet, these games still perform exceptionally well.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'M SO CONFUSED
Unless you mean 800 thousand copies, which methinks makes more sense....
But anyway, interesting read.

When I was in a group web chat with Edmund McMillen and Tommy (Team Meat) everybody was trying to figure out who the most successful indie was. Jon Blow and Kyle Gabler were said by a lot of people but Edmund (or Tommy), can't remember) mentioned Tom Fulp was the most successful indie. I couldn't really figure it out because they have a pretty large team to split the funds between but with those kind of sales I can see why. Plus I guess he's really raking in the cash with Newgrounds as well.
Nostalgia is a force to be reckoned with. I wonder how many people raged on this one?
Man, I did not expect for Battlefield to be such a clear winner in this. Good for them!
I was expecting splosion man there or something.
It is disappointing how millions of copies of full priced games are sold in a week and still not a single downloadable game can beat that number.
you buy funds through the wallet system on PSN as well. Last i bought was a 25 dollar pack, purchased a couple games, and have about 4bucks left awaiting.
