Xbox LIVE Arcade brought in over $100 million in 2009 photo

According to estimates from Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment (FADE), 2009 was a damn good year for Xbox LIVE Arcade. With more Xbox 360s in players' hands and a number of stellar new digital releases, the service is said to have brought in $103.4 million.

Battlefield 1943 was the real winner here: 800,000 copies sold throughout the year. Even Castle Crashers, which was released in 2008, saw continued success in 2009. FADE estimates 485,000 sales, with total sales since the game's launch falling near the 1,000,000 mark.

Estimated Top Titles by Revenue, 2009 (Average Price):

  • Battlefield 1943 (EA Dice) - $12.5 million ($15.00)
  • Castle Crashers (The Behemoth) - $7.3 million ($15.00)
  • Trials HD (RedLynx, LTD) - $7.1 million ($15.00)
  • Shadow Complex (Chair Entertainment / Epic Games) - $6.1 million ($14.38)
  • Family Game Night (Hasbro) - $4.2 million ($9.53)
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Capcom) - $4.2 million ($15.00)
  • Magic: The Gathering (Stainless Games) - $2.8 million ($10.00)
  • Worms 2 (Team 17) - $1.8 million ($10.00)
  • Peggle (PopCap Games) - $1.8 million ($8.86)
  • Turtles in Time: Reshelled (Ubisoft Singapore) - $1.7 million ($10.00)

This reports seems to confirm that even though people like to write off increasing digital download prices as something they won't be involved with, and make such facts evident many times over on the Internet, these games still perform exceptionally well.

That's like 80,000,000,000 Microsoft Points.

Wait, you say Battlefield sold 800 million copies, and only got 12.5 million dollars, with a price point of $15.00?

I'M SO CONFUSED

Unless you mean 800 thousand copies, which methinks makes more sense....

Do they ever release the figures for indie titles? I'd be curious to see how well games like "I Made a Game with Zombies in it!" [sic] have done.

800 million copies if Battlefield 1943 sold? How if there has only been about 39-40 million 360s sold? Surely you must mean 800 THOUSAND.

But anyway, interesting read.

Wow, way to go Behemoth!

When I was in a group web chat with Edmund McMillen and Tommy (Team Meat) everybody was trying to figure out who the most successful indie was. Jon Blow and Kyle Gabler were said by a lot of people but Edmund (or Tommy), can't remember) mentioned Tom Fulp was the most successful indie. I couldn't really figure it out because they have a pretty large team to split the funds between but with those kind of sales I can see why. Plus I guess he's really raking in the cash with Newgrounds as well.

Turtles in Time: Reshelled

Nostalgia is a force to be reckoned with. I wonder how many people raged on this one?

Man, I did not expect for Battlefield to be such a clear winner in this. Good for them!

Glad to see Magic: The Gathering got such good sales. That game was well worth the price.

I know I spent more on XBLA games last year than I would care to admit. There really was a steady stream of good releases.

I cant lie. I contributed my fair share to the xbl pot. I bought castle crashers, peggle, shadow complex, and Trials HD. To be fair I also bought a couple PSN titles. I rarely play those tho.

Family game night, should I consider this a slow year if that made the list?

I was expecting splosion man there or something.

Castle Crashers, R-Type Dimensions, Shadow Complex, Peggle, plus some more. I spent too much money in XBLA last year.

Dang. The only ones I haven't bought on that list are Magic, Family Game Night, and TMNT. Great year for XBLA.

They'd have sold me a copy of several of those games if they would accept US dollars as currency. Not sure what Microsoft has against my money. Luckily Valve doesn't have a problem with it.

Why do you find it so hard to buy MS points?
Jared Ari's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/04/2010 19:43

@flabzilla: I also find MS points silly and refuse to buy anything on XBLA. Not so much for the conversion rate. It's really the fact that you have to add funds to your account prior to actually buying the item that bothers me. I prefer Steam or PSN deals. I give money, I get games, not moon money.

I wouldn't say exceptionally well. 800K isn't exactly that big a number.

It is disappointing how millions of copies of full priced games are sold in a week and still not a single downloadable game can beat that number.

you buy funds through the wallet system on PSN as well. Last i bought was a 25 dollar pack, purchased a couple games, and have about 4bucks left awaiting.

Oh, I wasn't trying to call anybody on any kind of typo. Just too lazy to memorize and type that title correctly, knowing full well I'm doing it wrong.

I bought all those games and then some. I love the MS Points sytem because it is a universal currency and it creates a seperate economy where the value of the actual points can change. If you move to another country (an unusual circumstance I admit) then there would still be the same currency. I guess this would also be convenient if Xbox Live ever become globally ubiquitus.
