Wise consumers would pre-order the new Xbox console the day of its announcement at E3 so as to avoid the inevitable "shortages".
Seems to me pretty much a given that both MS and Sony have both begun work on the next gen of consoles. That doesn't mean they'll be out any time soon, but obviously they're doing something.
Anyone else content with the 360 and PS3 like I am right now? I don't see myself buying these new systems until 5 years from now. Plus, I can't really imagine what significant improvements the new consoles would bring.

Hmm ... that still seems a little early for me even if they are launching in late 2013. I Xbox sales have slowed that much and publishers (like EA) don't seem to want a new console, thinking it would hurt their business dramatically.
Plus what are they going to show at E3 2012, are they going to pull a Nintendo and show half the console and maybe one or two games? 2011 is almost up and I just don't see it happening, it's entirely possible but it seems a little out of place considering Microsoft still seem to want to go full steam ahead with that Kinect thing.
There won't be an announcement next year is my prediction, the year after that yes with the console coming out sometime in 2014.

considering what Turn10 did with Forza 4 on xbox 360 it's hard to imagine how good their future game will look on even more powerful hardware. Forza 4 already puts to shame even newest PC games like Shift 2 and Dirt 3 in terms of graphics.
though i kinda hope Turn10 will make new RalliSport Challenge - we need proper rally sim.

If these games are still in pre-production/early development, we could still have another 2 years before anything official.

Agreed. Happy with my current gen console. I won't be a day one purchaser of any new gen console. Then again, I wasn't this gen.

I really am quite happy with my xbawx, the only reason why I could want a new one is for new franchises to arise. Which is what happens with new console generations, usually. If they make Kinekt a centerpiece of it though, they've lost me and PC gaming is GO!

I've been saying this for over a year... xbox720-> 2013 and ps4-> 2014! I think it makes sense as the hardware is really outdated. Everyone saying they'll stick with their system will change their minds when all they get is shovelware... The xbox is already 6 years old and by the time the new one pops out it will be 8 years old! I don't know in what planet that is considered to be "too soon"... I think it's the perfect timing if you ask me...
If Rare made Killer Instinct 3 and Conkers Bad Fur Day 2 I would forgive them for the last 6-7 years.

Rare and Lionhead? Aren't they relegated to making games for Kinect? Unless Rare is going back to their roots, and Lionhead is making the sequel to Populous, Black & White, or a non-ass Fable game, color me apathetic, because neither of them have done jack shit lately to get excited about.

Im still happy with the current systems to be honest. Vita will give me my dose of new hardware and then I'll be content. Besides, given the last year of the 360 I doubt I'd be interested in the next Xbox. There's hardly anything on the 360 that isn't available elsewhere because Microsoft are too busy with Kinect and media deals. Until I see evidence that their business strategy has reverted, I couldn't care less about their next system.
@sofik, I beg to differ, my computer is capable of running a hexacore with a triple sli graphics card configuration. And a max of 24gb of ram. That should be more than plenty, even with the overhead of the os.

As much as it would be fun to have new consoles to dream about (and it would), my wallet would really appreciate a few more years with the current ones. Games like Rage prove that the 360 still has what it takes in the graphic department, and both HD consoles have really hit their strides lately.
The only thing I'd really like to see "fixed" with the current model Xbox is a higher-capacity game media (Blu-ray or something proprietary), but even that isn't necessary... yet.

I still havnt gotten bored of my ps3 yet! There is still so many nasty things I want to do and experience with it.

I'm in no rush, my backlog for PS3 and 360 is absurd, and I've basically given up on all the DS and PSP games I need to play. I'm still trying to make time for Eternal Sonata, and that came out back in 2007 for crying out loud. I hope Sony and Microsoft take as much time as possible to get this next gen right, and to let me catch up!
I'm not buying a new 360 because I know the 720 is around the corner. I hope they fix the 360 red rings and heat.
Yeah, Christmas 2013 sounds about right. It will be a year, or so after the Wii U launches, so they don't want to be too far off from that. They just better not rush it though, because the last thing Microsoft need is another RROD debacle. I don't think people will so forgiving, if it happens for a second generation in a row.
I think people need to keep they're expectations in check though. If this system is coming out in 2013, than don't expect it to be a this super powerful machine, that will put high end PC games to shame anytime soon, because it won't. We can at best, expect it to be like a high end computer from 2012/13, which is what the 360 was, a high end computer from 2004/5.

I got a Wii only a year ago, but I play it more often than PS3. And 360 was the shittiest console I ever owned actually, thanks to the fuckery with pricey HDDs, lack of Wi-Fi support, and unbearable loud noises it makes. Not to mention its horrible tasteless interface design, Gold membership bullshit and idiotic MS points system. I had fun with that console, I played some great games on it, so I have good memories of it too, but I'm glad it died on me eventually. Rest in pieces, you piece of fucking junk.
So my next console of choice is WiiU. I'll probably buy a PS4 later, but who knows.

consoles will always be behind PCs, and I am not saying that as a fanboy. Saying that a new console will be more powerful than a high end desktop PC is as silly as saying that a gaming laptop will be more powerful than a high end desktop. Consoles, like laptops, use modified versions of PC hardware.
