Xbox 360 voice chat quality to improve photo

What? I...I can't understand what you're saying.

That will always be a problem with the countless mumble-mouthed kiddies online, but at least their mumbles will sound a bit more clear when Microsoft updates the Xbox 360 later this year.

Coming in line with Kinect's tech, this upgrade will bump up the codec and the audio infrastructure that connects your Xbox 360's chat facilities with another's. Xbox Live Studios' Jerry Johnson said that this should make for clear(er) chat when you play online.

"The codec we used when we first launched was a low bit rate codec and we stuck with that," Johnson said at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival today, reports Eurogamer.

While broadband was required at service launch, it was a 64k connection and the chat service was tailored for that. Johnson notes that most won't think of that low a connection speed as broadband these days.

"It's time for us to move on. Especially if we want to think about broadening - a crackly headset on the top of your head – not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment."

Nice! We'll take it.

The XBL chat always makes my friends sound weird, particularly when compared to Skype. Any improvement is welcome.

The only problem I ever experience using 360 voice chat is when fucking Disco Pony jumps in a game and suddenly we can all hear our own voices coming through our speakers.

Fucking Disco Pony.

I don't usually have a problem with most people, but a few people (a couple on here and my bass player in particular) the volume of their voice is exceptionally low.

They could also improve the durability of the headset. My current one is held together with Gorilla tape.

They must make a ton of money on their over-priced headsets since they're so fragile.

Well, I don't know if this'll help with playing online that much, as a change to the codec to increase quality would probably also increase amount of bandwith used. It's bad when we're at a LAN with just DSL and party chat, so I'm worried this'll cause even more lag down the road...

Great.

Now my games will be even more laggy. Can we get an OPTION for this, please? I don't have much bandwidth to spare as it is, and INCREASED voice bandwidth utilization is not helping.

God damn you, Microsoft.

great, the sound quality will improve but the quality of what we will be hearing in random public games will not.

64k in 2005, or are they talking about the original Xbox? Even back in 2003 I had a 256k connection and in 2005 I was on 3 mb. Something is wrong here.

The problem isn't software, its hardware. The 360 headset uses a 2.5mm input, the same that is used on your telephone at home. PC has for a long time been using 3.5mm inputs which is the reason why, even a decade ago, the PC voice transmission has always sounded crystal clear. The fact of the matter is, the PS3 and 360 use an archaic method of voice communication and I certainly hope Sony and Microsoft join the big boys with their new console and give us a 3.5mm connector.

This is pretty interesting, actually. Maybe its the low bandwidth required that allowed them to package in a microphone/headset with nearly everything XBL-related. Kinda how like Sony raised the price of the PS3 and forced the cost onto consumers so that they can win the format war. Oops, kinda the opposite. Nvm!

Better quality audio is something I can't complain about!

People are really upset with this? Why? Because your shitty DSL cant handle it? Get a real internet connection already. Its reasons like this why standard technology is held back so long. I, for one, have a 22megabit connection and I would very much like Microsoft to use as much of it as possible if it means more upgrades.

This is a welcome upgrade, indeed. I love Xbox Live, but damn, voice chat is pretty horrible.

Apparently it didn't occur to nanowerx that not everyone lives in an area that has high speed internet available and/or has the extra money to shell for the service.

An improvement would be nice but they've got plenty of other issues to resolve and half the time the problems with voice chat are either user error or hardware failure. Although I tend to stick out of party chat and voice chat in public games seem decent enough in my experience

@Dare365.

Connectors (2.5 or 3.5) have NOTHING to do with the bandwidth used to transmit voice.

"Voice chat is great on the ps3, don't know how people can use wired headset though, wireless ftw."

I've had a terrible experience getting my Bluetooth headset to work with my PS3, but that's probably because It was free with a digital camera I bought.

Either way, that's actually why I prefer wired to wireless in this situation; just plug the headset into your controller and it works. It's not like you have to plug it into the system or something. Plus it came with the console, so I didn't need to buy an extra accessory just to talk to my friends.

Can they patch the wireless headset so it doesn't break for no reason? I've had two of the bastards just stop working and the customer service just says "I dunno lol, buy another"

@alexi - What he probably didn't realize, but pointed out, is that a standard connector means we could use a high quality headset for a low quality connection.

The mics seem much more reliable since they changed from the plug as pictured in the header. Although I prefer having the volume and shit like that old style, that's where the cable always busts for me.

@MrAndy - Really.

Mine was like.

1) Pair it.
2) Everytime you use it just switch it on and put it on.

And works perfectly. It is the official one though. But it does work with almost any blue tooth headset.

Actually didn't know that the Xbox one plugs into the controller, i'd imagined it to plug into the console and thus be fucking stupid. But if it does plug into the controller, that is, I suppose, a little better.

I like to keep my headset on while I'm smoking (outside) between rounds and keep talking to my group, or to keep it on when I go for a piss and let everyone hear it.

"Whoa dude, that was one long ass piss, suppose it's been a long time since our last break, you been saving that one!" - Actual conversation during a full day of Ad-Hoc Party Monster Hunting.

2.5mm is a standard jack. The problem lies with the digitizing of your voice. They used 64K so that it adds very little to the overall in/out traffic. Especially when the upload rates on most ISP's suck ass. (I got 10mb down / 0.5 up).

Frankly I had no problem with the voice quality so this wasn't one of my requested features. I would ask them to look into the stability of Party Chat when there are 8 people talking. In BC2, my party of 8 can not stay in the party for longer than 15 minutes before everyone gets kicked out of it.

Bet the quality on the new sound is still going to be fucking shit
