There is a reason why many Japanese gamers own an Xbox 360, and it's not because they love Halo. It's because Namco Bandai's Tales series is massive over there and, at one time, Tales of Vesperia was an Xbox 360 exclusive. Vesperia helped sell 360 systems in Japan, and ever since the game went multiplatform, users have become infuriated, petitioning the publishers and claiming that it's not fair for a vastly upgraded version of the game to appear on the PS3.
The petition makes a list of demands that address Namco's "underhanded" behavior and "abnormal" decision. It also claims that the 360 users were little more than beta testers for the real version of the game. Here's what the angered masses want from Namco Bandai:
- The games should not be dispersed across multiple platforms, they should be consolidated onto one platform [i.e. Xbox 360].
- The games should be complete and properly made.
- From now on, the porting of titles like Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia should be abolished.
- An official apology should be made to Xbox 360 users for the abnormal number of additions made to Vesperia only a year after its Xbox 360 release.
- The traces of the later additions found in the Xbox 360 edition should be explained.
- Further bizarre product linkages should not be undertaken.
- Elements of the Tales series [i.e. Patty Fleur] which cannot be enjoyed by all users should not be added.
- Characters and the Tales universe should not be toyed with any more than necessary.
- Certain platforms should not be favoured over others.
- We wish to see user complaints acted upon.
- We wish to see more consideration given to the effects of official actions on the fanbase.
Usually it's the PS3 fans who get upset over multiplatform titles (I still remember the Devil May Cry 4 petition) but at least in this case, I can understand the anger to a point. A lot of Japanese users bought their systems solely for this game, and to find out that it's coming to the PS3 with a boatload of extra goodies must seriously piss them off. Still, some of these demands are pathetic. Besides which, anyone with a brain should have seen this coming.
At the end of the day, when you deal with Namco Bandai, you must expect to be screwed. I've got limited sympathy for anyone that trusted the company over this one.
[Thanks, Unangbangkay]

Boy I sure hope they don't meet themselves...
and then there's Katamari's DLC nonsense...Eternal Sonata got screwed here too, and Soul Calibur 4's DLC bit. we can go on....

WTF?

DURP DE DURP DURP DURPIDY DOO
Contradiction + hypocrisy = FAIL
So they want it to not be on PS3? (haha don't make me laugh, remove a game from a platform, do you even KNOW how buisness' work? XD), but at the same time they don't want certain platforms to be favoured? Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
Guys, just come out and say it, come on, say it with the rest of the silly people in this petition: "We are fanboys, and don't want good games to come out on the PS3", go on, it'll make you feel a lot better :] I promise.
I only got Infinite Undiscovery because MS owns the IP.
I'm still waiting for Star Ocean
I personally wasn't impressed, but I've been so burnt out on console JRPGs that it's going to take something amazing to make me raise an eyebrow anymore. Everything's just so ... the same.
Especially, as you said yourself Jim, if money hungry Namco is behind it. Anyone who knows even a little of Scamco's business practices would've seen this coming. I you do intend to buy any console of this generation, do so only if there is a decent amount of games that will not only interest you, but justify the purchase of the console. Impulse buys, like in this case, usually are not worth it at all. Now you have consumers who spent a significant amount of money and now probably wished they didn't
I spent a ton of money on my PS3 (320 pounds) and got out of it God knows how much playtime. Sure my intention was to jump into the current generation with GTA4 as my first game, but I made damn sure there were plenty of other games that warranted a purchase of the console, thus ensuring the very large price tag of the PS3 was worth it. Same with the purchase of my DS lite recently, though that was much less in price.
Yes, it is a dick move by Scamco, and previous behaviour by them this generation (Shin Oni listed some examples) has highlighted just how penny pinching they are, but, in the end, it's the fault of the people who spent a lot of money on one game. This, of course is speculation, they may very well brought other games, but by the wording of the petition, it seems they have brought a 360 just for this game. Certain points seem to point this out.
Yes, I do feel empathy for them believing in a shitty company like Namco to only ever release the game for the 360, and the subsequent purchase of a fairly expensive console that probably left them out of cash. Especially since there is now a recession and money is tight in most counties, icluding Japan. I do feel a little sorry for them buying into Namco's BS, I really do. I am sure we gamers had at least one experience of buying into false promises by the gaming industry. But it's only their fault, not Namco's, they are a business, first and foremost. Getting as much money off of consumers is what companies do.
Writing such a nonsensical, immature, idiotic and downright stupid petition won't get them anything, or anywhere. This is just a way of letting themselves feel better for allowing themselves to be cheated out of whatever they felt entitled to. Instead of thining maybe they should make informed choices next time, or not believe a company's false promises, the choose to blame the company for their own mistakes, choosing not to think in a sensible manner.
I just find this situation saddening.
And this is coming from someone who's barely even heard of the game.
It just reminds me too much of the 16-bit era. When game ports had differences in them due to hardware limitations.
(Such as Earthworm Jim, where you had to choose between shit music or one missing level.)
An apology? They don't owe you anything! What makes people think they are entilted to an apology? This is like L4D2 all over again.
I already played through Tales of Vesperia four times on the 360 and am happy to play through it again on the PS3 with all the added stuff.
Also a fun comment from Yoshinori Kitase (Executive Producer of FF13) I heard at Gamescom: Real gamers in Japan have all the consoles anyway, so it doesn't really mater where we put the games as a developer.
Just a random brain fart, have no opinion specifically on this whatsoever except that Nerd Rage is cool.
Wow, hypocrisy at its bluntest. So many fails with their reasonings, it doesn't even need to be pointed out.
@Super Drybones
'"Certain platforms should not be favoured over others."
Boy I sure hope they don't meet themselves...'
I ROFLD.. Excellent comment.
But the PS3 port has recieved a hell of a lot of upgrades from the 360 version, and especially considering that this game was exclusive, it's pretty fucking harsh on people who bought the console just for this game.

- S*ck my sweaty hairy b*lls
People who buy a console for a single game are numskulls anyway, people need to understand that things like this are going to happen. The game wasn't REALLY exclusive anyway, since Microsoft didn't own the IP in any way.
@Infamy
I don't understand why you find comfort in that, as it relates to what I just said. However, good thing ps3 games aren't region locked(Fallout 3 being the understandable exception.) Hopefully I'll be playing this and FF13 this holiday season. I'm in like a 2% category though, sucks for people who don't understand Japanese and await the US releases.
Fallout 3 is region locked? I didn't know this. Why?
And good luck getting it for free. I'm still waiting for the second half of my Beautiful Katamari game.
