Xbox 360 US price drop confirmed: Now it'll TOTALLY beat the Wii! photo

Following the round of price drops in Japan, Microsoft has finally announced that Xbox 360 units in the United States are having their costs slashed in kind. Starting September 5, the Xbox 360 will have the cheapest current-gen SKU on the home console market with the Arcade model hitting $199. That'll make Microsoft's bare-bones 360 $50 cheaper than the Wii.

It's official: We've got an Xbox 360 price cut coming to the US. Our friends in Japan announced their price cut earlier this week, but now it's time to roll one out here. As of September 5th, the new prices will be as follows:

Xbox 360 Arcade $199
Xbox 360 $299
Xbox 360 Elite $399
Great news! It'll now be even cheaper to replace your Xbox 360 when it breaks. On a serious note, I really don't know what to make of these price drops. It's certainly good for the frugal consumer, but does it reflect well on Microsoft? The sales will do the talking.

It will make a difference to the average consumer. People like us will think twice, but a friend of mine is buying a 360 or a PS3 for her son, and you can bet the price will be the deciding factor on that one.

Oh yeah. I'm totally buying one for the bedroom. I can just switch the hard drive, and I'm ready to blow some shit up in a horizontal position.

I don't think anyone seriously looking into a 360 would consider an arcade.

Awesome, now to see what kind of price break I get on getting my money back from last month when I bought the 60GB.

200 dollars for an Arcade is a great deal, even without a hard drive.

@ fromagex

Watch out. I got burned hard on those refunds a few years ago. Your tax refund will be deducted for the amount that you drew. Don't count on anything back on your taxes. I ended up getting hit for a $600.00 bill from the IRS a few years after school.

I think it reflects that MS has FINALLY realized that the previous price points were not helping the install base grow at a desirable rate.

Perhaps now I shall buy one.

I wont buy one, I would even pay more if the hardware was reliable, which is not and I dont think it will happen.

Yay. Now I can get the arcade version, with a used 20gb harddrive, and still have some cash left over for games(even though I'll already have 5 arcade games to download...)! Gooooo price drops!

Price cuts are always good and always drive sales but not beyond a breaking point. These cuts are a strategical move by Msoft and a lot of time and research went into the decision. Sony should follow later for the holiday season.

I think MS chose the bottom option when designing the XBox360.

I thought everyone who wanted a 360 already had one? And don't the arcade games only come with DEMO's? I thought it did.

I am just bitter that my system died.
