Xbox 360 surpasses original Xbox sales: 25 million units served

Xbox 360 surpasses original Xbox sales: 25 million units served photo
     Xbox 360

Although the Xbox 360 launched with its fair share of issues, once the system started picking up big-name titles like Gears of War and Halo 3, it was only a matter of time before the console outsold the original Xbox.

That time, is now. Microsoft VP of Interactive Entertainment Chris Lewis broke the news to MCV saying, "We’ve already surpassed the installed base of the original Xbox – which is a really significant milestone. We’ve been blown away by the appetite of people to consumer digital entertainment experiences."

If you recall, the Xbox sold 25 million units worldwide in five years, while it only took the Xbox 360 three years to reach that same level of overall sales.

Honestly, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone. The 360 has been this generation's PlayStation 2 for a while now, and those recent price cuts certainly aren't hurting sales.

Well VGChartz.com is reporting 1.83mil less... Maybe by the end of the year they could reach the 25 million milestone.

And yeah if you include RROD, banned and modded yes. the number can get this high.

Like Dexter said. Many people have bought PS2s and 360s thanks to shitty hardware.

I don't think there is a PS2 of this generation. If there way, it would be the Wii, as that's the console that has the most sales and the msot types of games on it (and the most shovelware).

But like I said, there is no PS for this generation, and with just 2-3 years left in the this generation of console,s I doubt there ever will be a PS2 of this generation. Things just aren't as simple as they were a few years ago when every console basically did the same thing, so it was easy to choose the one that played DVDs over the rest of them.

I believe the PS2 analogy has nothing to do with amount of sales, but rather that in this generation, the 360 is the lead platform for third party development, has more (quality) games that are easier and cheaper to produce than it's competition in the PS3 (which sees it more indie and budget--not necessarily crap--titles), and has shipped more units based on it's merits as a gaming system.

RROD = Next-Gen Disc Read Error anyone?

Of course I couldn't leave that out.

However, the Wii isn't even a part of this generation. Sorry, I said it. It's a product of the last gen plus waggle, and in the eyes of the public, it's more of a hot item, a fad, a toy than seen as a true gaming platform. THAT is what makes it so successful. In an age where games are becoming more and more ambitious, outside of Nintendo and the occasional Capcom effort, no dev is really looking at the Wii platform as a means of advancing the way games are played. It's providing unique spins on what we've known and loved for years, but we'll never see something as aurally or visually engaging as Dead Space or Bioshock, nothing to advance an online community and infastructure like Halo 3 or Resistance 2, and certainly no game worlds as vast and alive as GTA's Liberty City or Fallout 3's post apocalyptic Washington D.C. All the sales in the world can't fix that.

Or make it any less a joke to someone who owns a 360/PS3 in addition to it.

It's that simple.

tl;dr, I know. Apologies.

Unfortunately, even though hardware design took different directions, consoles still do (or are required to) do the same thing, as demonstrated by the bunch of multiplatform releases that look, feel, play and perform basically the same on 360 and PS3. Exclusives suck, but the wasted effort in hardware design and in cross-platform development should be addressed. How? Utopically, with a standard platform, free implementation model; realistically, dunno. And no, I don't think PC gaming is the answer. And yes, I was a PC gamer.

I used my xbox 1 way more than my gamecube or ps2 when they was all new.

The ports of ps2 games look way batter on xbox 99$ of the time and the controler s was a better controler than the crappy sony controlers.
