Xbox 360 slims shut down to prevent Red Ring of Death photo

It's become a common joke that the new Xbox 360 Slim prevents Red Rings of Death simply because Microsoft took the red lights out. However, it's been revealed that there is a real preventative measure built into the Slim, as opposed to a simple aesthetic avoidance of the issue. The new Xbox 360 SKU voluntarily shuts itself down if it's not ventilating properly, in a bid to avoid damage from overheating.

If the 360 detects that it isn't getting enough ventilation, it will give the player a warning message before entering shutdown mode, whereupon its power light will flash. The system can then be switched on again once the light ceases to flash. The idea is to increase the lifespan of the console by powering down before it gets too hot and suffers internal damage.

A smart idea in theory, but one wonders how annoying a 360 that shuts itself down will be, especially if Microsoft hasn't fixed the issue of overheating in the first place. Has Microsoft fixed the RRoD only to replace it with an even more embarrassing and widespread problem? We'll have to wait and see just how often this shutdown feature needs to kick in before we know for sure. I just have a bad feeling about this, given Microsoft's commitment to making terrible things happen.

Red Screen of Death. It's the RRoD's younger brother.

It should be pointed out that it is due to lack of ventilation in this case, as Jim says. I know that this is hard for fanboys to grasp, but this is not a confirmed Red Ring on the new xbox, nor will we know for some time if the issue still exists. I'm sure they'll be lots of misconceptions, anyway, though.

yeah, this won't be fun if it happens between saves.
thanks Microsoft for bringing the Windows experience to consoles.

So it's a bit like Ubisofts DRM, when it was first announced. You were playing a game with no ability to save for some time? Tough luck

Hmm... well, this is technically better than the console bricking itself, but it certainly won't convince Sexualchocolate to buy one anytime soon. Well, this and all those pew pew space marines.

I don't see a problem with this. It makes sense.

If I'm a dumb fuck and leave my console in a Tupperware box, wrapped up in a towel and still playing games then at least this will prevent me from burning out my console.

Who gives a fuck what a troll like sexual chocolate thinks anyway, this is a prick who judges people on the console they own and whether or not they're a "hardcore" gamer or not. I'd rather have a console that prevents me from
frying it than one that cooks itself from the inside out, I'd rather have a console that didn't do either, but what's the alternative? A ps3? No thanks.

Any tech can overheat and malfunction. It's the user's responsibility to take care of it and give the damn thing proper ventilation, keep it off carpet, etc.

Jim: The idea is that since it shuts down once it hits a certain point, you won't have a box that overheats. Usually these sorts of issues are a snowball effect where the console gets more and more damaged due to being run while overheated until it finally needs to be replaced. This should *hopefully* make it so those scenarios dont happen.

Just hope that the tolerance level is pretty reasonable...

I don't get how people can let their consoles get into such a state in the first place. I've still got my launch-day 360 going, never had to have it repaired, never failed on me. Keep 'em horizontal, away from heat sources and with a lot of room around them and you're fine. What the hell are people doing to their consoles which necessitates a big warning message and automatic shut down?

@live by the sword - the device you used to make that comment has a thermal shutdown failsafe, too. It was also probably $300, too. What's really interesting is that the original 360 must not have had a system for thermal shutdowns.

It's a good safety feature to ensure the unit doesn't completely over heat.

I can see it being annoying in certain situations, but I'd rather have it shut down if need be then brick.

That's SO STUPID.

1. You'd think I'd be easier and cheaper to solve the RRoD problem rather that develop a program to automaticaly shut it down.

2. What happens when your in the middle of a very important game online or off, and THIS happens? No thank you.

3. We can't make the 360 fail by rapping it in towels and forcing a red ring so MS will take the damn thing.

4. pancakes : awesome

I'm not buying this new xbox

I think it's also important to note that "hasn't fixed the overheating problem" isn't exactly accurate. It's a totally new mobo, so if there's an overheating problem, it's a new overheating problem, because it's new processors, new mobo, new fan.

This reminds me of those old DOS games. Without a boot disk, they'd often crash randomly with the message, "Out of hunk!"

Having the console shut down before it gets too hot is a good start, but stopping the console from getting too hot in the first place would be even better.

Thats a real shame. I was genuinely considering buying one. I have always been a playstation user. i was going to buy a slim360 to check out some games i missed. Before this I was always concerned about spending money on a console that could overheat and die so easily. But, this is now a whole new reason for me not to buy one. This means that they haven't designed a newer, better, non-breaking 360. They have just repackaged the old one. whats the point in that?

Like was said, this is TECHNICALLY better than a RRoD, but if this is MS's genius way to "fix" the original issue then it's beyond pathetic.

For the record, I know about 5 people that have had 360's RRoD on them and ALL of them had their systems in decently ventilated areas. The system ITSELF was designed in a faulty manor, it's not the consumer's fault in the least that RRoD's happen.

I blog using a $50 dollar refurbished dell laptop & a $60 G1. They've never shut down due to overheating and they run 24/7. The fact is that M$ continues to sell products that are overpriced and poorly designed. I like a lot of the xbox360 games, yet due to poor reliability I couldn't bring my self to buy one. Maybe when it costs $120 or so.

I disagree plat mike, they will still troll you. They just have something different in their arsenal now. What is it? The rrod still hasn't been resolved, instead the time till the console possibly does it has been extended. So now when you're 2 kills away from a nuke in mwf2 and your system shuts down because the ventelation issue still hasn't been resolved I think you'd be pretty upset, I know I would.

what did happen: do i really need to say that between 30%-50% of all 360's crash and burn. and still people spin and spin and spin like fucking politicions.

nobody with a brain says 360 has no good games... 360 hardware = shit.

I don't see why there's a need to troll a safety feature. The auto shutdown to prevent overheating has been built into mac computers for years. The problem will come if the 360 is shutting itself too often. We will have to see.

This doesn't sound like it will be very helpful, if you ask me. Shutting down the console doesn't solve the problem if the problem is ventilation issues. Though I guess it will be a good indicator to clean the console of dust and move it to a more open location.

If that solves the problem (cleaning and dusting) then we're good. But if the problem is still that the shitty hardware overheats for no reason, then your Xbox is still bricked; if you can only play the thing for an hour* at a time before it shuts itself down, then I still consider that a bricked console.

*pure speculation

Wii does the same thing. At least 360 warns you. The Wii just fuckin' shuts down.

Now I haven't updated my firmware in forever so maybe they've changed that but there was at least a time I know where the Wii just fuckin' shuts down without warning and it's SOOO annoying.

I don't mind a shut down to avoid overheating but gimme a few minutes to find a spot to save at.

The solution to overheating was in the manual to begin with. "Take a fifteen minute break after every hour of playing."
