Xbox 360 Slim isn't in GameStop's financial plans photo

Rumors are swirling about an upcoming fresh Xbox 360 redesign -- a slimmer, perhaps more portable iteration -- but don't bother asking GameStop brass Dan DeMatteo about it. He knows as much as we do -- which is to say, nothing but rumors from suspect sources.

"And we have nothing in our financial plans for anything different -- either price change or new upgrade -- of either the PS3 or 360," DeMatteo-san told listeners of GameStop's Q4 earnings call, after shutting the door in the same manner on the Wii HD. "I wouldn't be surprised if their total focus was on the new motion-detection devices, etcetera."

From the Wii HD to a new Xbox 360, we're in "[We] don't comment on rumors and speculation" territory. We'll just have move along for now (and hope our HDDs can make the transition if Microsoft does indeed have new hardware up their sleeves).

It's really a moot point. Retailers are under NDAs when notified of new hardware, or other releases. No one from any retailer is going to go on the record and say something is coming if they actually know about it - they'd be in major trouble from Microsoft.

Also, saying you don't have financial plans in place for something you don't know about it ludicrous. Retailers can't plan financially until they are informed of the release by MS (and then they can't talk about it publicly) so they have to react financially at the time. It's the nature of the biz...

If there managed to be a PS3 Slim, there could be an XBOX360 slim. Though they did not slim down their original XBOX either.

If it's true, those fuckers better fix the RROD problem, becase it's ridiculous.

I think the rumors stem from a leaked photo that allegedly shows a newly redesigned 360 motherboard that combines the CPU/GPU in a single chip.

Hardware revisions are standard with all consoles, the whole slim thing is speculation.

Hmmm that reminds me of a course I took that told us how GPUs were replacing CPUs, nVidia got quite a field to go on, even might compete with Intel.

Can someone tell me why in Gods name would Gamestop know about something planning on being announced at E3? jwsensei pretty much hit the nail on the head.

In all honesty, I would imagine they are foretold so they can have plans for retailing and promotions. But I got nothing else to stand in.

@Monodi:

Yeah but even if they somehow are, wouldn't they get in big trouble for leaking something like that?

Beats me, sometimes shallow hype is a great marketing strategy.

Hey, I used to have the exact fan the "prototype" is using. :<

That said, is this news at all suprising? He wouldn't talk about rumors in case MS decided to throw a lawsuit at him for leaking information.

I could see anything they'd do with it to make me ditch the one I have now.

The main draw to the Slim was a lot of people didn't have one and it was dropped to a decent price with a few nifty upgrades here and there. Everyone who wants a 360 has one. RRODs are at least under control. All they can really do is knock off a few bucks and increase the HDD. Big whoop.

I just can't get excited for a slim 360. If just doesn't do it for me. For some reason it just doesn't do the same for me like the PS3 Slim did.

Xzyliac: I would argue that you haven't seen it yet. Maybe it looks super sexy and small? I'm not saying I'm going to throw my functioning model out the window as soon as a new one comes along, but I'll take a look at it.

The new update they have that supports an external USB HDD seems to support this new slim idea. I could easily see Microsoft releasing a new smaller (think Wii) system to launch with the Natal as a bundle. They could use a new look.

Yeah, I'm guess any potential re-design would launch with Natal. Wouldn't really make sense, before then.

Rumors about the Xbox 360?? Finally! Last time I check, Wii and PS3 rumors spread like wildfire! I do hope this isn't true though. My Xbox 360 Elite is thin enough as it is.

I work for the biggest specialist uk retailer and Iknow more about new products before the company does from reading dtoid etc. When something is announced like the ps3 slim we have to print off shitty black and white POS posters etc, if they already knew they would have colour displays etc ready mailed out not and make us print rushed out ones

Since my 3 year warranty runs out in August, I would likely end up getting a new SKU if it happens.

Well it would be okay (if it wasn't compat. w/ current hard drives) if it came with a sufficiently large internal drive (500GB+) since you can redownload just about everything and xfer saves w/ a memory card.

HAHAHAHAHA.

Dream on. Microshaft won't be able to turn down the chance to sell you ANOTHER overpriced HDD!!!

I also smell a resurgance of the RROD, or the RROD posing as an E74 error, around or after the launch of a new model Xbox360.

It's Microshafts way, it's what they do best.

@KwikPwn & Monodi: It's a little more than a rumor now, even the picture of the mobo was "analized" by Ben Heck and according to him it's very possible.

@Corduroy Turtle: However right you are on SC trolling, i have to acknowledge he does have a point given MS's track record.

Slim and redesigned "would make many current Xbox 360 owners happy"?? How, by making them spend money to buy another new console that offers no tangible performance improvements? Sure, it'd be great to be smaller, lose the megabrick and (hopefully) be more reliable, but do you really think millions of 360 owners will abandon their perfectly good systems to "upgrade" to what's essentially the same hardware?
