Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, says that the timing of the Xbox 360 price drops was coincidental. It had nothing to do with the PlayStation 3 price drop. Or so he says.
"Typically these types of price changes are targeted to drive sales for the holiday season," said Greenberg to G4. "However it is difficult for our retail partners to make these types of changes in November or December so we try to work with them to make these types of adjustments before things get too hectic at retail."
Perhaps that's exactly what Sony was thinking. And speaking of Sony, Aaron tries to start a little sh*t. He was asked by G4 to comment on the PS3 Slim, and this is what he said:
"I guess as a gamer, I am glad I got an earlier PS3 console before they pulled a lot of the functionality like backwards compatibility out."
Heh.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I could use a DVD player, have a lot of PS2 games, wouldn't mind blue ray, but can't justify bringing both a PS3 and a PS2 to college. And the PS2 library still puts the PS3 library to shame.
And yes, I'm joking!! :P
There is nothing to complain about.
Or an asshole. One of the two.
Nonetheless, it was pretty much a given that a price cut was coming, if it makes buisiness sense to do it now, then it shouldn't be a suprise that both companies are doing it now.
Boom Blox is THAT good.
@brainderailment: Thanks for declaring my point to be null as well. LOL.
Yeah it does seem iffy but he makes the point of how all the advertising (much of which we saw leaked over the past few weeks) was bought and printed far in advance and that like Sony they have guys who know a few months before holiday season is a good time to get rid of old skus and drop prices.
Sure thing, bro. It's the part where you announce it a week after Sony that's the part that isn't coincidental though.
That being said, they probably had a whiff of the PS3 slim and price drop, and acted in response months ago. It just wasn't like a spur of the moment thing because OMG PS3 SLIM QUICK DROP IT. Business doesn't work like that, or that fast.
Oh and on the whole, "backwards compatibility" front. All of you who have a "huge, mega-awesome library of PS2 games!" can just keep your PS2 close by. It's not like it's THAT much of a burden, hell Sony kept all the same cords, which I am SO grateful for, so you could just stow the big/little black box under your bed or something. I think the only reason it's a problem is because PS2 actually had good games, unlike the Xbox.
I have never wanted to play a PS2 game on mine, though I could, but it was never a selling point. I do think it should be semi-standard by now, but it shouldn't cause that much gruff. I heard it's actually quite costly because they have to include a separate reading laser to read DVD's.
