Xbox 360 price drop timing was completely coincidental photo

Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, says that the timing of the Xbox 360 price drops was coincidental. It had nothing to do with the PlayStation 3 price drop. Or so he says.

"Typically these types of price changes are targeted to drive sales for the holiday season," said Greenberg to G4. "However it is difficult for our retail partners to make these types of changes in November or December so we try to work with them to make these types of adjustments before things get too hectic at retail."

Perhaps that's exactly what Sony was thinking. And speaking of Sony, Aaron tries to start a little sh*t. He was asked by G4 to comment on the PS3 Slim, and this is what he said:

"I guess as a gamer, I am glad I got an earlier PS3 console before they pulled a lot of the functionality like backwards compatibility out."

Heh.

Yep, well I think the 360 would still have sold more units seeing it's the obvious choice when buying a console...

Like it or not, backwards compatibility does matter to a lot of people. I still want a PS3 slim, but not with the primal lust that I would have felt if Sony would have stuffed that feature back in.

PS3 slim with BC = I buy one ASAP

Well, the lack of backwards compatibility is the only thing stopping me from getting a PS3 today.

I could use a DVD player, have a lot of PS2 games, wouldn't mind blue ray, but can't justify bringing both a PS3 and a PS2 to college. And the PS2 library still puts the PS3 library to shame.

I still have my launch 60GB (now 250GB) PS3 with Backwards Compatibility and, honestly, I have only used it once to play Tekken 5 with some friends because my PS2 was unavailable at the time. Seriously, it not THAT great of a feature, out with the old and in with the new. The PS2 had a nice long run, I think it's time to move on, retire, and let his younger brother take the stage now.

I would also buy a Slim if it had BC. As of now, the only game I want on the PS3 is Disgaea 3 and it got pretty average reviews because of the low-res sprites, so I can wait or even pass entirely.

So the director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, is "glad" he "got an earlier PS3 console"?

PS3: $300 + PS2: $100 = $400

There is nothing to complain about.

That Aaron guy sounds like a cool guy.
Or an asshole. One of the two.

Nonetheless, it was pretty much a given that a price cut was coming, if it makes buisiness sense to do it now, then it shouldn't be a suprise that both companies are doing it now.

@Crude Darkness: That says something, I'm almost sure everyone at MS has a Wii as well.

Suuuuure Microsoft, suuuurreee. It just happens to be that if you hadn't dropped the price you would have had the most expensive console on the market.

@Natnavi, I have another option: used PS2 for $30-$45; now there REALLY is nothing to complain about.

@brainderailment: Thanks for declaring my point to be null as well. LOL.

@Matrixdude171: to be fair, its not like this is any more bullshit than sony claiming they didnt drop the price because of any sales related motivations.

If you think this isn't a coincedence there's simply something wrong with your logic. Of course a price cut was coming.

Right. It's much better to buy a single console which promises backwards compatibility and then ends support for same instead of buying a console which you know will not support the feature in the first place.

I just want to point out that I've been hearing rumors for price drops on BOTH systems since before E3 (Maybe Microsoft rumors started then) and the fact that they were announced within a week of each other isnt really coincidence...but it doesnt seem intentional either. Its just a good time to do it.that being said, Sony will be playing catch up until they release a $200 system. yeah no one here wants an arcade, but those buggers sell. like crazy. I'm suprised Microsoft didnt take the hit and put the arcade at $150. Maybe they would have lost too much money (Like they havent lost enough this generation)

Why does the motive matter? The important part is that the Xbox 360 has dropped in price for the holiday season.

Microsoft has done cover-ups and lies to save its pride before. Coincidence? Pfft. If it was, they would have announced something like that at GamesCom too.

Yeah it does seem iffy but he makes the point of how all the advertising (much of which we saw leaked over the past few weeks) was bought and printed far in advance and that like Sony they have guys who know a few months before holiday season is a good time to get rid of old skus and drop prices.

Sure thing, bro. It's the part where you announce it a week after Sony that's the part that isn't coincidental though.

Xbox couldn't have seen the PS3's drop, though "oh crap" and IN ONE WEEK knocked down the price and cut the Pro console. Anyone thinking that is retarded.
That being said, they probably had a whiff of the PS3 slim and price drop, and acted in response months ago. It just wasn't like a spur of the moment thing because OMG PS3 SLIM QUICK DROP IT. Business doesn't work like that, or that fast.

If he was asked Why the price drop on G4, then they suck for asking a question that doesn't matter. If he just mentioned it out of the blue, then he sucks as the "Why" doesn't really matter. Actually one could interpret it as an unconfident person trying to convince everyone else when they don't give two shits on the why, just the fact that it's now a lower price.

Regardless of whether it was coincidence or not, it's still the same idea, to sell more 360's to the masses. Whether they did it in an attempt to compete with Sony or completely on their own volition, it's a marketing tactic. It's nearing the Holiday season, it makes sense either way.

Oh and on the whole, "backwards compatibility" front. All of you who have a "huge, mega-awesome library of PS2 games!" can just keep your PS2 close by. It's not like it's THAT much of a burden, hell Sony kept all the same cords, which I am SO grateful for, so you could just stow the big/little black box under your bed or something. I think the only reason it's a problem is because PS2 actually had good games, unlike the Xbox.

I have never wanted to play a PS2 game on mine, though I could, but it was never a selling point. I do think it should be semi-standard by now, but it shouldn't cause that much gruff. I heard it's actually quite costly because they have to include a separate reading laser to read DVD's.
