Xbox 360: Now with less fail!

Xbox 360: Now with less fail! photo

We've become used to Xbox 360 system failure as much as we we have to broken chips in the bottom of the Doritos bag. It's a shame that the system with so much great game content  has so many reliability issues. Now Bill Gates says that they aim to have " the most reliable video game box out there." Video Game box?

We've got incredible reliability on the new work we've done...Our commitment is that it will be the most reliable video game box out there. People really love the Xbox because of the content, but we've got to make sure that the hardware never stands in the way of that.

Gizmodo says that Gates is referring to the newer, cooler-running Falcon chipset.

Will switching out cooler running chips solve the RRoD problems? Do you actually think a day will come when we'll think of the Xbox 360 as reliable?

All Hardware has a margin of error. It would be nice if it was very reliable and most important of all a more silent running machine. As long as they fix mine if it breaks I will be happy.

I don't think the problem now is the RRoD as much as people complaining about the XBL problems.

and I see some people out there still want XBL to be free. If they REALLY wanted to be a reliable "game box" they'd let the buyers that don't have the falcon chip models exchange for the newer models with the falcon chips for free.

the 360 is a champ. i've only had one go out on me after 8 months and my second one is right as rain to this day. so, hopefully, this new chip set will end the reign of terror of the red ring of death, but i was never that salty about it.

My second one has lasted almost a year, and my first did as well.

Right before my warranty goes out on the new one, Im going to overheat it and get a new Falcon system...

Hopefully once it's released they replace RRODed 360s with new chipsets.

I don't understand people like witthaus that say, "My 360 is fine. It's only fucked up once." That is not fine. I've had my NES for 20 years at least, and not once has it gone out. I've had my PS2 for like 10 years and it has never given me problems. THOSE

I really, really doubt that we'll see the Xbox 360 seen as "reliable" for quite some time. Even if the new 360s are extremely reliable, there's that lag between reality and perception where people will still carry around the notion that 360s are prone to high failure rates. Look at the stats that people toss around without any kind of factual basis, as it is. I've seen people say 1/3 of 360's fail, 40% of 360's fail, even 50%, never with any link to a source or evidence, and hardly ever being questioned by anyone else on their claim. It's just accepted as fact.

Even if the problems are fixed or mostly addressed, it will take years for the 360 to rebuild its reputation.

When I pay $350+ for a gaming console, it better work, and I shouldn't have to worry about it screwing up, unless I personally do something to make it screw up.

I actually got Rock Band for the PS3 instead of the 360 because I thought, at least it won't RRoD on me and I can actually play it. My 360 has RRoD'd on my twice. I don't know anyone who hasn't had theirs RRoD on them. So less fail for the win.

I'm glad this topic was brought up, because I'm currently without my 360. It broke back in early December. So Microsoft sent me a broken one. Naturally. Your system breaks you get a broken one back...right. So now I have to send this broken one back. I've been waiting almost two weeks now for them to send the box, via fed-ex. It supposed to arrive today, according to the tracking number.

So yeah, I have a few questions for all those that went through this headache. The man on the phone told me. Since this is my second time. We will be sending you a new replacement unit. What does he mean by new? New as in a new system in the box, like bought from a store?, or just a new system taken out of the box? Because I don't get it. If they send me a new system. What do I do with my current HDD? Will it work on the new system? Do I lose my content?

@Orionsaint

When I sent in my RRoD'd box in last November, they sent me a "new" one back. As far as I could tell, it was a completely unused unit, and its manufacture date was last September (the one I sent in was a launch unit).

I have no idea why they'd send you a refurbished unit and send me a new one (unless the launch console thing had something to do with it), but from what I can tell, when they say new they mean new.

It will be sent OEM, the 360 console itself and no fixins. They'll change out the rights for your digital content for you, so when you slide your HDD in there nothing changes from before aside from a few repeated set-up hassles.

The ONLY thing that's bugged me about the transition is that my downloaded tracks for GH are only playable if I'm logged into Live. Everything else is peachy.

The RRoD is pretty much the only reason keeping me from buying the 360. If MS doesn't fix the problem soon, I'll be getting a PS3.

I think at this point it would be hard for Microsoft to overcome this stigma. They have had these issues for to long to try and turn this around. Could they do this? Maybe. But I think the probabality is very low. If they had a made a more reliable machine FROM THE START it looks and is better for the consumer than trying to change it 2 years after you released the thing.

So, does this mean my 360 dieing now was really a blessing in disguise?

(don't answer that, because I have already come to the conclusion that it was. I get a free month of XBL and my warranty extended another three years. I don't care who you are, that almost makes up for my 360 failing. Almost).

@Baron

The unit's manufacture date is just for the original system.

If you have sent in for a repair, you got back a refurb, no question. But so far as reliability, you're on day one with the system, because, as MS explained it to me in the three times I've sent in for RROD, the system they send back as refurb has ALL NEW parts in it. New drive, new Motherboard, new everything. The only thing that's not new is the case and serial number.

They really need to make it look reliable now or else no one will buy their next system at launch if doesn't come with a 2-3 years warranty.

Thanks Baron. Well if it is new. I'll be getting a system with HDMI. Which is perfect for me, what you gotta six to eight week training program here. Which is perfect for me. I'm gonna walk outta here a lean mena fightin machine! No I mean I recent got a Sharp Aquos 1080p. So it's perfect. Maybe they'll send me the 360 Pro with Forza2 and Ultimate Alliance. It's the least they can do.

What else do you expect anyone at MS to say, "We expect to have the same level of quality with our hardware?"? Perhaps, "We don't plan on changing a damn thing, we're fine as is."?

Of course they going to say all the pie in the sky stuff they can, doesn't mean it's true.

lol @ Novakaine

But seriously, this Bill Gates comment infuriates me... He has somehow described a console with the worst reliability ever seen in gaming as "the most reliable video game box out there".

His escape clause is the little "it will be" that precedes the statement.

I feel sorry for the people who bought a 360 and just want it to work all the time. Especially when they have to hear this self-congratulatory tripe from the people who sold them a system that causes so much trouble.

The 360 has great games, but someone needs to take responsibility for the awful build quality.

My PS2 broke once, the black ones were different or something from the newer silver ones. It ran quieter and loaded a bit quicker on certain games that took forever to load e.g Max Payne 2..

Then again my ps2 cost 130£ not 320£ so in theory 360's should be built with better software, going by price.

@bbrigg1

I agree!

The comment above made me laugh about the 360 being a champ and crapping out 8 months into it's life span.

Lets say that the 360 has a 30% failure rate, of the 16 million sold that would mean 4.8 million have junked out, sure sounds reliable to me. Even a 1% failure rate would show almost 500,000 junked systems, which is not a small number by any means. Also, out of the 16 (or 17) millions 360's sold, what % of that total is becuase of people picking up a 2nd or 3rd unit? I would like to know.

I still have my NES, SNES, lauch ps2, ps3 and Wii and they work fine with no errors (so far).

"Right before my warranty goes out on the new one, Im going to overheat it and get a new Falcon system..."

Haha! How are you going to do that? I can imagine you slowly creeping up on it with a blanket and then jumping on it, telling it to "shh" as the lights slowly go red.

I've got the Falcon chipset in my system. It does seem to run a bit cooler, even after a 2 hour "marathon" (I'm in grad school...no more 6 hr sprints for me) and it's barely warm, as opposed to my last 2 systems, which had a bad habit of giving 3rd degree burns to anyone nearby. I wish I could quiet the fans without voiding my warranty, but I'll take what I've got.

Novakaine wins an internet.

I agree with akathatoneguy: perception is reality in this case, and just like everyone will be saying “the PS3 has no games” probably through the end of 2008 at least, I can’t see gamers ever thinking of the Xbox 360 as a reliable machine, let alone “the most reliable video game box out there”. I mean, I’m glad that Microsoft has been making amends, what with their $1.5 billion warranty extension and the new Falcon chipset, but it’s hard to change the first impressions they made with the original failure-prone 360s.

@mix: It’s impossible to know; Microsoft might be able to keep track of that if they wanted to, but I doubt it. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that 15% of all 360s have failed. Their most recent sales numbers (including this past holiday season) are 17.7 million consoles worldwide, as far as I know, so 15% of that is over 2.6 million units. Since most people probably had their unit under warranty, MS fixed it for free, so I can’t see more than half a million people actually having to pay full price for a new unit from a store. I could be completely off, though...

I think everyone has gone insane. My NES never died???? WTF, I have an Atari Lynx and it still works too. If I build a bike to travel then I reckon it should be fairly reliable, however if I build a space shuttle there may be a few more issues. Compare like with like, why do you think something as complex as the PS3 took so long to get to market (to Microsoft's advantage even with the problems). This is something we will all have to get used to. On a side note I got an ipod touch for christmas and it lasted an hour...GRRRRR. My replacement is flawless though..so far. Shit happens, wear a helmet.
