Xbox 360 HD DVD player price drops again photo

The Xbox 360's HD DVD player continues to drop in price, this time hitting $129.99 in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

I'll let you, Destructoid readers, speculate why the player has dropped in price again, this time with a $50 chop. I think I can remain neutral and say that $130 is a pretty good deal for a HD DVD player, especially when bundled with the 5 free movies deal (PDF file).

Best Buy offers a slightly better price on the external player, asking ten dollars less than the new suggested retail price.

I think that Microsoft could do even better on the price. Regardless of wether they're dropping the price to reduce stock or make a push against Blu-ray, I think a sub-$100 price point would make more of an impact. Of course, there are many who will say that even this is too much for a "dead format." But I think there's still some consumer interest in the format. The only problem is that this price drop may not be enough to make a real difference.

Will you be rushing out to grab this discounted player?

I already have one and I love it. I'm gonna buy another one as a back-up so that when HD-DVD DOES die I'll be able to take advantage of the hugely discounted prices on the DVDs and always have a player to play them on.

No way. I bought a real one for $200, a Toshiba. Waste of money at this point, I'll stick with my PS3 from here on out.

Do not want. I'd rather see a price drop in the 120gb Hard Drive.

Blu-Ray has pretty clearly won the format war at this point. The PS3, the number of movie studios that supported Blu-Ray, and Blu-Ray gaming all added up to a definite win. This is a death throe of a lost format. $130 is still a waste of money for a useless thing.

Hell yeah....errr I mean no, as much as I would have loved to(prior to WB jumping ship) I think i'm gonna take the money I would have spent on the drive and a couple dvds and get Rock Band and some MS Points this weekend. It is readily available now isn't it?

Microsoft must be getting desperate if they are dropping the price by that much. Still not going to bring people over to the HD-DVD format.

Of course, I already have HD-DVD in this laptop, and I still haven't bought any movies to try out here either.

have it, love it. Have the blu-ray player, felt like getting this last year. Use it mostly as an upscaler, and with free hd-dvds along with discounted other ones, it's still a movie collection.

may be down, but not out.

I'd want one...if I wasn't afraid of my 360 dying every time I turn it on. Why not just put out a new console that isn't faulty with one built in. The whole external thing looks retarded anyway.
