Xbox 360 gutted and successfully returned for cash photo

I don't know about you, but every time I've ever returned something of an electronic nature to a store, it's checked inside and out before the store accepts and refunds money. Apparently there's a store out there that doesn't put a priority on checking, as someone was able to return a gutted Xbox 360 to some unnamed store for a full refund.

CVG has pictures of the returned console, which has been stuffed with paper, cardboard, "some VGA cables for a computer and an old parallel printer cable."

The fooled employee tries to blame the incident on girls: "the guy that was working that morning was by himself, so we cannot under any circumstances leave the dept. So the girls that work at the service desk were told to see if everything is in the box, and approve," he continues. "Obviously they did not do a very good job." Be a man, dude. Own up!

You thought this story was an urban legend, didn't you? Now there's a guy out there with the innards of an Xbox 360 and a few hundred dollars; he's a real legend! Also, he's a piece of crap.

Hit the jump for more pictures.

Can't they go after the guy who returned it? I mean they must know who it was...

Probably not...cash sale = no trace of person...sure there are cameras but that would likely be too much to investigate...

@Commodore624: If it really was "girls". They more than likely would've been your typical high-school bitch. So their reply would've been "OMG XBAWKS", a half-assed check to see that the shell of the console was there, and an approval.

Well, I traded in my busted(through no negligence on my part) old ps2 for a funky new slim one a couple of years back without them even opening the box. I think if you have the original packaging, they assume everything's all right. More fools they. In fairness though, vacuuming the rear air intake caused it to work for 5-30 minutes before crapping out, so it probably would have passed any rudimentary tests they tried.

I'm actually impressed, this COULD work at the walmart near me, i was tempted to put the voided/broken 360 i have into my arcade pack box and return it. You're allowed 3 receipt-less returns per year

When I worked at EB back in 98, we had a guy who would guy PC hardware and return it the next day, but instead of the newly purchased item, he put his old one that he was replacing in the box and got a full refund. He scammed my old manager 4x doing this.

There is a new law in Florida to that effect BrainDerailment. It has to do with people stealing shit and taking it to Pawn Shops.

Seriously, though, what's this guy going to do with the innards of a 360? Play it? I guess he could, but he could very easily short something out or get substantial dust on it.

Like Luke, this guy/girl had some serious bawls taking this back... But, if they had been caught, would anything have happened?

Why's someone who robs Microsoft a "dick" or "crap".

Rock on for sticking it to the man and taking his money. Shit, that's the principle the corporation was FOUNDED on and created from. Highway Robbery.

Go thief!

You can buy 360 shells from xbox scene people for like $40. My guess is he grabbed anything he'd need to put inside a replacement case and left the shell for the scam.

This shit happens all the time in retail. I caught someone gutting PC's back in the 90's when I worked at Wal-Mart. The store manager didn't understand how they were doing it without breaking the warranty seal. (Hint: A Heat Gun can remove those things without leaving marks...)

I feel bad for admitting it, but I've done this twice...kinda.

Remember the original Playstation? I got one within a week of them coming out. It played it till it died. It died. I bought a new one, put my old one in the box, and brought it back to the store. It worked, never heard about it again.

Remember the Playstation2? I bought it within a week of it coming out. Disk Read Error after a few years. Buy, swap, return, profit.

In my defense, the guy that owns the store I did this at is a total fucking toolbox, and I probably wouldn't have done it if he wasn't such a prick.

The Phone Losers of America used to do this scam with modems. Either replacing the circuit board with one from a lower-end modem or crushed Pespi cans. Hell, you can even listen to them calling the store to brag.

It's bad but it doesn't shock me at all. This kind of stuff probably goes on a lot more than people hear about. I used to work at Best Buy, and some of the cashiers/service desk people were just really dumb. However, there were some that knew their shit and you had a very slim chance of getting something past them. Most likely, if the person checked at all, they probably opened it, saw the casing, and the cables, probably still wrapped up in their plastic, and said its all there. Its even worse after christmas.

After christmas I remember you used to be able to return opened, dvd's, games, etc. and get a full store credit for it with no receipt. Shit I had friends that brought games back they had for months and got full store credit for them. Go to a few different best buys and do the same thing, get yourself whatever you want.

I did the same thing to a 1000 dollar TV at electronic express. i went through 4 months of "repairs" and they ended up giving me a new tv and just leaving me with the old one. so i stuck the old one in the new tv's box and got my money back and a free HDTV! hahaha!

Think of how many times people have posted about circuit city, best buy or walmart (the list goes on..) completely dicking them over and then tell me that this is wrong.

When I worked at Wal-mart about a decade ago, somebody once returned a camera that had been literally smashed to pieces, probably with a sledgehammer. Everything on the inside was now on the outside. It was also returned in a shoebox! The "customer" did have a receipt, but no box... or shame.

The store took it back. Wal-mart always takes it back if you pressure hard enough.
