We’ve been hearing rumblings of an Xbox 360 Elite price drop for a little while now and this Walmart ad has confirmed what we knew was coming. The Xbox 360 Elite will be going for $299 starting next Sunday, a $100 price drop and putting the system square against PS3 Slim.

The Xbox 360 Elite won’t be coming with an HDMI cable, which is no surprise. What is surprising, though, is that the system is coming with composite cables rather than component cables. Sure, the cables aren’t that expensive anymore but it’s really annoying that the PS3 and now Xbox 360, both consoles that have been pushing consumers into the Hi-Def era, don’t come with Hi-Def cables.

Speaking of Xbox 360 price drops, Joystiq is reporting on this Xbox 360 Elite Halo 3 bundle going for $329.99 in Canada. Neat!

Replace Component With Composite and vice versa.

It sounds like a reasonable way to cut some money off the price if u still haven't went HD as of yet, like me.

@bardock:: Component is the one with 3 *component* video signals (and can do HD). Composite is only one video signal that is a *composite* of all the signals (the yellow plug). I think that the article might have an error. If the Elite comes with Component, you get HD out of the box.

Well, looks like I'm gonna be a PS360 owner pretty soon here. Glad I waited and didn't spring for a pro, the elite will look nice with my ps3 - and the rest of my setup, which is also black.

If they included Wi-Fi, that would place the Elite square against the PS3 (on a hardware level, ignoring the absence of Bluetooth and Blu-ray).

Every single system on the market—Wii, PS3, DS/DSi, PSP/PSPgo, iPhone/iPod touch (even the Zune HD, purportedly)—has Wi-Fi. Why Microsoft, why? >.<

@ natetehgreat: Because they want to trick everyone into buying their $100 attachment for it.

Seriously though, good third-party wi-fi attachments are between $10-20. It's not a big deal.

Seriously Microsoft, aren't HDMI cords like a dollar? Or even less if you would be buying them in bulk?

As for why neither the PS3 or 360 ship with HDMI cables, well it just doesn't make sense to include cables that 1) many people still have no use for (while they do have a use for composite cables) and 2) what length of HDMI cable do you include?

On #2, people who have a use for HDMI cables tend to have somewhat elaborate setups involving receivers and/or wall mounts and/or custom in-wall wiring. If you include a cable that's too short, people won't use it. If it's too long, people won't use it. With HDMI cables being dirt cheap when bought through places like monoprice.com (not spamming), there's very little point in including HDMI cables.

@Natetehgreat: Don't forget the 120 GB hard drive too. I won't be interested unless Microsoft drops the price for that thing. Until a more reasonable price range is reached, the PS3 Slim will be on top of my list. Honestly an original Xbox for fifty USD is more appealing. It's probably just as fun.

As I said on 1up and in a GT thread post.

Looks too real not to be.

Can imagine the deal will come to US as well but I can't see anyone rushing out to by this the same way they will the Slim.

People forget that the 360 was already widely successful where as the PS3 (kinda) lagged behind. A lot of people wanted one but couldn't afford the price tag... now the drop has happened a lot of people will get one (my friend just pre-ordered).

Whereas the 360 has always been affordable so a price drop and great bundle won't have the exact same effect the slim will.

So the US gets a nice price drop but in the UK the price stays the same at £229.90 and the Arcade goes up in price to £159.99...

Thanks a lot Microsoft.

@Loogibot,

While I too would like to see the 120GB 360 hard drive dropped to a reasonable price, it is included with the Elite (which is why I only noted the lack of Wi-Fi as a point of contention, at least on a hardware level; on a software/services level, Live in conjunction with Wi-Fi brings the price up to $450).

I like how some are calling it a price cut: they're simply adding features to what was once the Pro. What was the difference between the pro and the elite:

1. Colour
2. Bigger Hard Drive
3. HDMI Cable. (Which they are removing)

So all you've got is the pro with a bigger HD and a change of colour.

I don't view this as Microsoft pulling into the lead again, so much as the playing field finally leveling off.

Now that both main models are the same price, the PS3 does look like a much better choice to me personally. Yeah, free online and blah blah blu-ray . . . all I'm interested in is which system has which exclusives, though. Now that they're both the same price, that's the only deciding factor for me.

And I've waited a long time to play some of those Playstation games.

I read somewhere that NONE of the elites have jasper chipsets yet. Plus if that whole 54% fail rate news item that went round the other day is to be believed it would seem that no matter what chip you get you ain't safe from the RROD. Would seem to be more of a structural problem than a chip one.

Maybe they will fix it if they do a 360 slim. Which they probably won't because they would have done it already.

HDMI cables INCLUDE THEM YOU BONEHEADS there like 6 bucks.

now that thats out of my systems, I really don't see this changing much, with the arcade out no one was yelling for a cheaper 360, we were yelling for them to fix the RROD, the damn disease is getting worse and harder to ignore, its even starting to become well know amongst non gamers. With the ps3 at 299 MS acting like the problem doesn't exist any more is only gonna hurt them in the end.

It seems Moneysoft has seen Sony getting away with adding non High def cables in their system and still being able to push them out. This shit really irritates me even though I had a HDMI cable and components for my 360.

don't throw me a sales pitch and not include the whole sale. Why haven't people spoken out about this shit?

in australia the ps3 slim is AUD$494 whereas last week the older model was costing AUD$688. i was thinking of getting a new xbox for the larger hard drive but ill be getting a ps3 slimwhen i can.

blue ray and built in wireless definitely push it over the edge.

I'm just hoping 360 hard drive prices go down considerably from their current ridiculous pricepoint. After recently picking up Rock Band 2, I can see that song downloads and whatnot are going to kill the F out of my hard drive space.

Why did they hold off to right after Sony did the PS3 Slim, why didn't they do it sooner? ah cuz people don't have a choice back then, now they do, so we need to fix that. And look at all of you willing to buy a 2nd(and above) console for replacement for the RROD version.

As a very happy 360 owner, this makes no sense whatsoever.
Let me explain:
At $299, the PS3 Slim has a 120GB HDD, built-in WiFi, and can play Blu-ray discs.
The 360 Elite has 120GB HDD, NO BUILT-IN WiFi, AND CANNOT PLAY BLU-RAY DISCS!!!

So is Microsoft looking to be dethroned by Sony!? They have built up such a huge lead in sales and market share over the past 3 years over Sony due to the initial, and up until now, continued high cost of having Blu-ray capability, which forced Sony into a much higher MSRP than the Xbox 360, that now they are just going to throw it all away and get slaughter in Christmas sales!?

[...Holy run-on sentence, Batman!]

I fear that Microsoft is in for a very, very rude awakening.

They're a long way from level pegging, the xbox still needs..

1) Extortionate "special" HDD
2) Controller chargers!! WTF?! Take the piss why don't you MS!?
3) WiFi adapter
4) Live Subscription

... and you still won't be able to play Uncharted / Socom / MAG / Killzone / LBP / MGS4 / Fat Princess despite having spent MORE on your console and overpriced perhipherals, which, by the way, has a 54% chance of dying.

So uh, yeah really level pegging there. A Console that costs more, doesn't play most of the best games, doesn't play the current HD film media, a terrible (almost criminal) failure rate, a paid for online service full of ads, doesn't run AVI files of a memory stick (tres important), doesn't allow you to use a USB keyboard / mouse, doesn't have a free music video streaming service, doesn't allow you to turn it into a freeveiw recorder, has online games full of children screaming profanities and still bends you over a barrel should you want any perhipherals by not allowing use of standard HDD's and headsets etc.

No thanks.

I'm personally thinking about getting a PS3 slim as a second console to the launch model PS3 in the living room. perhaps get a slim for the mrs.

I just couldn't live without playTV, Vidzone, Free online gaming, bluetooth headset, blu-ray, AVI files off USB sticks, the rich, diverse, interesting games library, or the 500gb HDD i got off ebay for £50.

Although if you want a box to put in your kids bedroom and keep them out of your hair for hours on end (read: bad parenting) until it dies in 1 maybe 2 years, if you're lucky, then by all means buy a 360.

I will say this though, Sony need to take a long hard look at some currency conversion rates. $299USD is NOT €299Euros. Neither is it £249GBP.

Wonder how much shipping would be to import a yanky PS3 slim to the UK??

Is the 360 region free? That's another handy perk of the black beauty.

How does 50GB optical storage & Wi-Fi succeed in making games worse.

1. Wi-Fi is optional, there's still an 1GB ethernet socket on the PS3.
2. I haven't had any problems/lag gaming on Wi-Fi on the PS3.
3. KZ2 proved you don't need an install & games will run fine off Blu-Ray.
4. If the developers can't get to grips with how to put data on a Blu-Ray in an efficient manner they can always fall back on a mandatory installs.

It's amazing that the only people who moan about PS3 mandatory installs are 360 owners. All the while they're copying whole DVD's onto their hard drives to shut up their loud disc drives.

I play games at home - at work I like to jump on the old destructoid and wind up some 360 fanboys.

And in my lunchbreak.... I play games - PSP FTW.

The pro-360 arguments really entertain me. It's like arguing that walking is faster than driving, or that Tapes had better sound quality than CDs. It's crazy.

I would probably have a heart attack if i met a 360 player who had the bollocks to admit that the PS3 is a far better machine but the 360 is cheaper.

I'm not afraid to admit that, the 360 IS cheaper, providing all you need is a WiFi-less, offline only games console and you have some way of getting free batteries - in that case, yes, the 360 is cheaper.

I'll also admit, that the 360 has some nice exclusive DLC (although I find the whole business practice immoral) and one, maybe two exclusive games that I'm a little jealous of. But nothing worth buying a 360 for, specially not from a company like Microsoft.
