Xbox 360 gets an anti-piracy update photo

Were you a naughty little boy who stole Halo: Reach or Call of Duty? Microsoft knows, and it's very disappointed in you.

A new update has hit the Xbox 360 to bolster its piracy protection, and it's mostly geared towards dirty copies of Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops and Halo: Reach. Players will no longer be able to run these copies, and their accounts will more than likely be flagged for a ban.

Make one wonder why people persist with "back up" versions of Xbox 360 games. Microsoft seems able to kill them at will, like a terrorist who's put a remote-control bomb in your heart.

Still, we live in a world where people brick their PS3s in a desperate effort to thieve games, so I shouldn't be surprised.

God dammit, not all PS3 hackers are pirates.

All that will happen is pirates will not update their xboxes until some hackers have found a new way around it. which won't be long. then they when the new hack has been released, people will download it and update the disc drive, simples.

@redeemer - no one said that, but you got to amit there are enough pirates to ruin it for the rest.

Yep they are. Guilty buy association. It's the hackers who at the very least enable the ability to pirate games, and let's face it 99% will be pirating games themselves.

Get caught knowingly buying stolen goods you deserve a clubbing from the long arm of the law just as much as the shitface who stole it.

@LittleBigD
We're all guilty by association based on how Sony/MS/publishers punish all legitimate consumers with increasingly absurd DRM.

Guilty until proven innocent is the way everything is nowadays and it's bullshit.

Oh, and ONE MORE THING

If hackers are all guilty of piracy by association just because they ENABLE piracy, then I suppose people who make guns and knives are responsible for murders by people who use these tools?

I suspect you'll be foolish enough to say yes, but I just wanted to point out how absurd that argument is.

I laughed my pert arse off this morning reign a thread on a forum where people were complaining about their "back-ups" not working.

If the "back-ups" not working then why not just put the original in the disc drive? Or copy the original into the hdd?

I think we all know why.

Let's hope Microsoft rolls this out on all games to teach these supercilious bastards a lesson.

Who cares about DRM? Not me or anyone I know. It's never affected the way I play games. Ever.

I can only assume that the people crying about it are the same people trying to break through it for hacking and pirating purposes.

@redeemer DRM isn't nearly as much of an issue on consoles as it is on computers. Sure it is heavier than ever on consoles, but they are devices built for a very specific purpose, so there isn't anything the games being protected actually does to punish you as a consumer.

@ScooneySteve

That's a good point. But on consoles we still have to sit through mandatory firmware updates. Not as bad on the 360 as it is on the PS3. I know PS3 owners complain all the time about how long the updates take. Nobody wants to have to go through that all the time just because Sony thinks they're possible criminals. Even worse when the update doesn't add anything beneficial for me.

It always cracks me up when I read the homebrew argument. Yeah, sure. Get a fucking cheap PC, install Linux and do what the fuck you want with it.

Sometimes I really don't understand Linux nerds. Seriously, who cracks every system so he can install windows on it and further demands that Linux has to be runnable on literally every platform?

For me it looks like Linux is the protective wall all these hackers can hide and everyone is like, aren't they sweet, they only want Linux to work.

I'm not completely against it. I just don't understand the motivation behind all this.

That is because you live in a country were MS actually gives a shit about you, instead of just consider it a black hole in the map not worthy of support or recognition...
I am not going to defend many pirates that just don't want to bother with originals, but for many people that is almost the only option.

Honestly if you are going to modify your system why would you think you would still be able to use the online service... They lock it down the way they do for a reason. If you want to mod your console for "homebrew software" buy a second one to play online otherwise make a choice. Play with what they gave you or go play with yourself.

Make selling guns and knives illegal and you might have a comparison putz.

If I sell a gun on the street to some drunk who uses it to kill his wife then I'm going to jail. Dumbass.

Make hacking legal, and assholes like yourself won't have much to worry about. Game developers would disapear because they won't be making any money, but that'd be alright I guess.

@LittleBigD:

DRM can be a huge pain in the ass. Sometimes I have to travel for work, and internet connections are sketchy at best, assuming they are even available. Draconian 'always connected' DRM schemes mean that I can't play my games on the road.

My only problem with homebrew people is that they haven't done enough to distance themselves from the pirates.

Just calling yourself homebrew isn't enough. I actually really respect the homebrewers out there as they are clearly very clever individuals that are trying to expand upon a devices uses.

But on that same token, they're not taking responsibility for what they are indirectly doing to 80% of the customer base. I don't give a damn about the homebrew programs you make if you ruin my ability to enjoy games online as a result of your meddling!

I mean, look at Kinect. Who cares that people are hacking that? It's not ruining other Kinect owners lives. In fact, it very likely has improved it. But hacking the PS3 is harming more people than it is helping and I can't understand why homebrew people can't realize that in the first place!

And yet they wonder why people are pissed at them... I suggest they get a damn clue.

Considering that the newer xbox game cases are more prone to cracking discs, ie; my copy of madden 11, I can see a very small argument for allowing backups. Also, hell no I'm not paying for a bigger hdd while they cost so much. My 20gig is fine for updates and the few dlc I pick up. Still, most of those "backups" are bullshit.

Oh, and the ps3 has the tech to make it a very awesome and cheap high end media server, which is why losing linux means that homebrew is my only option for that kind of functionality at this point. Was I the only one who noticed the massive spike of hacking after sony ditched otherOS?

To everyone kicking up a huge fit about the pirating issue: does pirating music and movies infuriate you as much as the games? I've run into one instance where pirates had ruined gameplay for me and that was just the other week out of god knows how many years I've had the PS3. To be so up in arms against people doing their own thing. Don't worry about it man, as frustrating as it is (and was for the brief 5 minutes I had to deal with it) worse thing you have to deal with at the end of the day is a shitty online match, so quit and enter a new one... Unless you're looking at things in the grand scheme kinda way: in which case we're all fucked and we're all to blame all cause of the wrong things we've done in life. Just take it down a notch guys, there are much better things to get fired up about in life.

Yes it makes me mad as hell. There is an entire mall not far from me that without exageration runs on piracy, knockoffs, and fraud. I'd burn the place to the ground myself if I could.

What pisses me off the most about the place is that a lot of the people taking advantage of these services are government employees (cops even) who should know better, should be the first people to blow the whistle, and who make so much money that the thought of buying from this shithole should never cross their minds. Makes me fucking sick.

I really don't understand all the venomous hate dude. I mean it doesn't even sound like you've had a gaming experience ruined. Sounds like you've been burned by the place or something.
Im not just playing devil's advocate either mate, really am interested in your thoughts on piracy with music, movies and even comics. I'm not too in the know on the game publishing world and where money goes so I can't quite comment on how much piracy ruins the gaming industry. But I do know enough about film and music to know the artists don't receive any of the dough contributed by the fans and consumers. The record labels and movie companies do. it's unfortunate but artists usually get paid with recognition that lead to better gigs and or deals in the future. And yeah one could argue that if enough people did nothing but download music and films, than there could potentially be no music industry or there could be no movie industry in the future or perhaps they could start raising prices. But let's be honest, regardless of what we do, prices will be raised and companies will come and go. To be honest, the more you support the big guys, the big companies that are selling the games, the dvds, the cds, the more you are fucking over the little guy. Unless ya know, you get it from a local retailer (than you're just doing your fellow neighbor some good, and there ain't nothing wrong with that). You do know a director, actor, writer, musician get paid regardless of how well the sales do. The sales just determine future work, and in this day and age (take a page from Kevin Smith's book) with the interwebs, you don't need big companies or huge opening nights to prove there's an audience out there who will seek out the content. But again, I'm not too aware of how the gaming industry works, but yeah, those are my two cents. Come to think of it, I'd argue the worst thing piracy does is fuck over the little guys. But this is all off the cuff and open to debate, so debate fuckers.

I would bet my paycheck that 90% of the people that complain about pirated games have pirated music/movies/software. Everyone's a hypocrite because they find some way to justify certain "stealing" but not others. BTW, I don't agree it's "Stealing". Stealing means someone will lost something tangible or costs money. If I go and DL a movie/game/song that I wasn't going to buy anyway, who does it take money from??? noone.. the bits are floating around cyberspace, someone just knows how to put them together at no cost to anyone (whether you DL those Bits or not, they still exist).

I have an xbox 360 with LT+ which basically means undetectable from MS. I instead get a black screen that come up and the game just doesnt boot. you can check if your xbox has been flagged by using a special program and my xbox hasnt been flagged :) however i would like to point out that i do own a genuine copy of the game. I stay in a flat with 3 other guys and as you all know black ops can only be played online with 2 people on one copy and why should we be forced to spend another £40 on a game when we already pay £35 a year each to have the so called priviledge of playing these games online. If MS and game developers want to stop pirates why not reduce the price of games. I mean its not as if these companies make enough money.... is it?

If a product is for sale and you aren't going to buy it, what makes you think you're entitled to possess it? Things don't just float around on the internet like they've been dumped into the ocean, they're hosted and shared by people. Someone is responsible for providing pirated games, not just "oh look, I've put together these seemingly random ones and zeroes into teh haloez".

Look at it another way. If you made something that you intended to sell and everyone got it for free, would you think it was stealing while your studio was closed and you wondered how you were going to pay your rent?
