Stealing a cue from Johnny Cash, Microsoft has now officially dropped the Xbox 360 Elite, the much sexier, more experienced, black-clad older sister of that innocent, white console you've been smooching behind your parents' backs. People have been clamoring over this thing since it was rumored only a few short weeks ago, and it seems the wait is finally nearing an end. There's no official release date for it, and the details are nothing new, but it is nice to finally see a bit of official confirmation after these past few weeks of constant Internet tittering.
Was that sentence just a poorly planned excuse to use the word 'tittering'? Probably.
[Mad hearts, stars, horseshoes and clovers (but not blue moons), to our friend Trafalio for sending this our way.]
[UPDATE: Yeah, yeah, so after being bludgeoned with links, I will admit that the official release date is April 29th. I'm doing it under protest though, as saying I was once wrong goes against everything America stands for. An eagle weeps tonight, ladies and gentlemen.]
not the great thing it was said to be
BULLSHIT
Buy the drive shut up this will be gone by christmas
They better sell the 120 GB drives in gray though. Everything of mine must match.
I really want to know what the announcement set for tomorrow is though.
Some beta?
I was excited about the Black OPS360 for about 20 minutes and then I just started caring more about getting that hard drive.
I wonder if any trade shops will have specials for trading up to a 120 gig.

Do you see an official release date on there anywhere?
Love,
Nexy-poo.
I do however like the option that ms is giving us. We have 3 different systems packages for 3 different kind of people they way I see it. And I live my options. Also it's funny going to joystiq and 360fanboy and reading all the comments. I love fanboys, the brighten my day.
Don't know if it's "official" official, but thats where I got it from...
I demand a edit button!
In other news, the 360 Black announcement was a little obvious... but theres another exclusive announcement coming out tomorrow, any guesses as to what it could be?
Distinguished by its black finish and signature metallic detailing, Xbox 360 Elite will have an estimated retail price1 of $479.99 (U.S.) and will come packed with components and accessories for the ultimate high-definition entertainment experience:2
The new Xbox 360 Elite console is expected to begin arriving in U.S. stores on April 29.
-From the press release
Albert Penello says 4/29 here as well

Gets me thinking its an early Halo Beta release as well... but it could just be a random bunching of coincidences mixed with a firm dose of wishful thinking.
im glad i just snagged a cheap 360 off ebay! :)
Because its not that the XBox 360 ain't great or anything but its jet noises really negates the whole point of watching HD content on it.
when i play Burnout my system can't handle it...
mostly for co-op system link ( gears, crackdown, halo 2 etc) and in preparation for halo 3
does HDMI make a big difference in games?
someone should make side-by-side video comparisons
the elite is not gonna have a 65nm chip, and all 3 SKUs are here to stay.

@908peruvian
i am pretty sure that any difference between HDMI and component is not that big. prolly hard to notice at all if there even is a difference. although, i imagine it is nice to just have one connection for audio/video instead of the usual 3-5 on composite or component. that seems really nice and convenient.
concerning the 120gb hard drive... i think they should have just ditched the 20gb and sold the new one for $100. it would be flying off the shelves i bet, but oh well.
While this move will not hurt MS the move i would have made would have been the death blow to Sony...
*I also own the other two systems (PS3/Wii)
"Microsoft said Tuesday it will also sell a 120 gigabyte hard drive for $180 that can be added to the two existing versions of the Xbox 360: the basic Core System for $300 and the $400 Pro."

Seriously, if you didn't expect it to cost more, you're stupid. And with the 20 gig HDD going for $100 already, what did you expect?
I didn't realize that somehow MS went into everyone's homes and disabled featues on current X360s; that what it seems like for some of the complainers, since that's the only way MS could screw current owners.
I MIGHT have paid $150 for it, but $180, well shit, I can buy a whole stack of games for that. And it isn't like you can just double the drive space and justify the same exponential expense at retail. You can buy off the shelf 120 GB HDD's and slap them into a PS3 for $60. Granted, I'm on the 360, but it's a really dicky move to ask triple the going retail price for a HDD in a fancy schmancy case. I hope someone's able to crack the drive firmware so we can start putting our own drives in there soon.
exactly! i have been waiting for the ability to put bigger hard drives in the 360 from the beginning. i cant wait for them to crack it so i can slap a 250gb hdd on there........ and rip games onto it. ^_-

...yeah.
