Xbox 360 Elite official; black is the new black? [UPDATE] photo

Stealing a cue from Johnny Cash, Microsoft has now officially dropped the Xbox 360 Elite, the much sexier, more experienced, black-clad older sister of that innocent, white console you've been smooching behind your parents' backs. People have been clamoring over this thing since it was rumored only a few short weeks ago, and it seems the wait is finally nearing an end. There's no official release date for it, and the details are nothing new, but it is nice to finally see a bit of official confirmation after these past few weeks of constant Internet tittering.

Was that sentence just a poorly planned excuse to use the word 'tittering'? Probably.

[Mad hearts, stars, horseshoes and clovers (but not blue moons), to our friend Trafalio for sending this our way.]

[UPDATE: Yeah, yeah, so after being bludgeoned with links, I will admit that the official release date is April 29th. I'm doing it under protest though, as saying I was once wrong goes against everything America stands for. An eagle weeps tonight, ladies and gentlemen.]

What an awesome announcement. I can't wait to not get one.
They better sell the 120 GB drives in gray though. Everything of mine must match.

I really want to know what the announcement set for tomorrow is though.
Some beta?

Tomorrow better concern Halo 3 or IPTV, or I don't care.

I was excited about the Black OPS360 for about 20 minutes and then I just started caring more about getting that hard drive.

I wonder if any trade shops will have specials for trading up to a 120 gig.

I'm not going to waste my time trading in my premium system. I don't see any reason I should besides a bigger hdd. And I agree with most, white looks so much better.
I do however like the option that ms is giving us. We have 3 different systems packages for 3 different kind of people they way I see it. And I live my options. Also it's funny going to joystiq and 360fanboy and reading all the comments. I love fanboys, the brighten my day.

you guys who mention buying the 120gb hard drive separately do realize that it costs $180, right?
moclippa's Avatar
moclippa at 03/28/2007 00:59
180 bucks for a hard drive is outrageous... guys that are planning on actually doing that should wait a few months, fill up their 20gig (take the effort to delete useless shit, and rent dvds instead of marketplacing them) then when they absolutely feel its necessary, they upgrade... by then hopefully the price will be less l33t and more realistic.

In other news, the 360 Black announcement was a little obvious... but theres another exclusive announcement coming out tomorrow, any guesses as to what it could be?

Well Danzuke... Crackdown has started advertising a mysterious new download available that doesn't exist when you check the downloads section...

Gets me thinking its an early Halo Beta release as well... but it could just be a random bunching of coincidences mixed with a firm dose of wishful thinking.

April 29 is when it is coming out, Microsoft's Official Blogannounced it in a video on their main page. That $180 drive is a huge ass rape for consumers but when the only profit you make on a console is the drive I understand why they do from a companies point of view.

Is there any information regarding a possible 65nm processor?

Because its not that the XBox 360 ain't great or anything but its jet noises really negates the whole point of watching HD content on it.

Cripes, I don't see a lot of people dropping $180 on that hdd. M$ really needs to drop the price on the 20GB to around $70-80 and phase it out real quick so they can drop the price on the 120GB to something reasonable (like $129.99, but I think it will be a while before it hits that price). If the rumors are true that the elite will turn white eventually and become the new premium system (with the current premium becoming the new core), there's no way people will pay $180 for that drive down the road. To be honest, I don't see it selling too well right now.

i'm probably getting one too.
when i play Burnout my system can't handle it...
mostly for co-op system link ( gears, crackdown, halo 2 etc) and in preparation for halo 3

does HDMI make a big difference in games?
someone should make side-by-side video comparisons

Don't you think this is bad for people who just bought a Xbox 360? This will waste a bunch of money, and a black controller reminds me of the old Xbox. White is great, don't ya think? :)

@Turbostraw and some_dude

the elite is not gonna have a 65nm chip, and all 3 SKUs are here to stay.

@908peruvian
i am pretty sure that any difference between HDMI and component is not that big. prolly hard to notice at all if there even is a difference. although, i imagine it is nice to just have one connection for audio/video instead of the usual 3-5 on composite or component. that seems really nice and convenient.

concerning the 120gb hard drive... i think they should have just ditched the 20gb and sold the new one for $100. it would be flying off the shelves i bet, but oh well.

I am a big MS fan*, but this was a stupid move. The right move would have been to drop the core move the premium price to 299 and sell the Elite for 399...

While this move will not hurt MS the move i would have made would have been the death blow to Sony...

HDMI doesn't make THAT huge a difference. The only thing it allows is 1080p without the VGA cable. Beyond that, there's really not a ton of difference in the image quality.
Matthew Mac's Avatar

Sooo, people bitch about not having HDMI and a bigger HDD, MS actually gives it to them, and people are still bitching? Wow.

Seriously, if you didn't expect it to cost more, you're stupid. And with the 20 gig HDD going for $100 already, what did you expect?

I didn't realize that somehow MS went into everyone's homes and disabled featues on current X360s; that what it seems like for some of the complainers, since that's the only way MS could screw current owners.
BluDesign's Avatar
BluDesign at 03/28/2007 08:47
I'm puzzled why MS thinks that 120 GB HDD's are worth $180.

I MIGHT have paid $150 for it, but $180, well shit, I can buy a whole stack of games for that. And it isn't like you can just double the drive space and justify the same exponential expense at retail. You can buy off the shelf 120 GB HDD's and slap them into a PS3 for $60. Granted, I'm on the 360, but it's a really dicky move to ask triple the going retail price for a HDD in a fancy schmancy case. I hope someone's able to crack the drive firmware so we can start putting our own drives in there soon.

The difference between HDMI and Component isn't necessarily that huge, but there is a key difference insofar as component cables still carry an analog signal that the has to be converted back to digital before it's displayed in HD resolution. HDMI cables let you forgo this conversion and thus the signal is truer and less compromised. At least, that's what I'd tell you if you were trying to decide between a component and a more expensive HDMI cable at my Radioshack store. Truth is, Component is fine. I've seen component and HDMI side by side, and I wasn't able to tell the difference.
