Xbox 360 Elite gets a price cut in the UK, like right now photo

in the interest of not being complete jerks, Microsoft has seen fit to lower the price of an Xbox 360 Elite across the entirety of the United Kingdom. As of today, our friends in Great Britain can purchase a new system for the lowered price of £199.99, which is 30 pounds less than any poor sucker who bought one yesterday paid.

This will hopefully serve to take some of the sting out of the 360 Arcade's recent nonsensical price hike, and now you can all join us in the little happy dance we've been doing in the US. Additionally, the 60gb Xbox 360 Pro is being completely phased out in the UK, so hereafter your options will be either "decent value" or "complete ripoff."

You can read the otherwise thoroughly uninteresting press release detailing the price change after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE
The Best Value in Games and Entertainment; Xbox 360 Drops Elite Console Price across the UK
There has never been a better time to purchase an Xbox 360 with more games and entertainment at an even more affordable price
LONDON – 27 August 2009 — Xbox 360 today invites you to experience more fun, more entertainment and more ways to connect with friends and family at an even better value. From August 28th 2009 an Xbox 360 Elite console will be priced at only £199.99 estimated retail price (ERP). And with 120GB of storage, there’s plenty of room for your favourite games, movies and more from Xbox LIVE.

Xbox 360 puts all your entertainment in one place so you can play games, watch movies, listen to music and coming this Autumn, watch live TV via Sky Player, Sky’s Online TV service as well as being able to enjoy music with LastFM and be part of the social collective with your Twitter and Facebook, all from your Xbox 360.1 And, as announced earlier this year, the Xbox 360 bought today will work in the future with “Project Natal” the controller-free gaming experience.

“With the Christmas season right around the corner, it’s another opportunity to put the consumer centre stage with entertainment and games that everyone will enjoy,” said Neil Thompson, Senior Regional Director ,Entertainment and Devices Division, Microsoft UK and Ireland. “We have a goal over the next 18 months to deliver value with amazing content and rich interactive experiences in the living room.”
The new pricing structure provides choice, differentiation and value at both entry and premium levels with the new price point for Xbox 360 Elite with a 120GB hard drive at £199.99, and £159.99 for Xbox 360 Arcade.

The Xbox 360 Pro with a 60GB hard drive is to be phased out.

Having an Xbox 360 at the centre of your living room provides more fun for less and entertainment for any occasion through Xbox Live:

Play games for everyone.
Families and friends can get together to belt out tunes on “Lips” or build a famous foursome and relive the music of the Fab Four with “The Beatles: Rock Band.” For those who crave action, players can tear up the tracks of “Forza Motorsport 3”; jump back into the “Halo” universe as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper in “Halo 3: ODST”; or deploy for combat with this year’s highly anticipated title from Infinity Ward, “Modern Warfare® 2,” the sequel to the best-selling first-person action game in history, “Call of Duty® 4: Modern Warfare.”

Watch live TV and movies.
Coming this Autumn, Sky Player on Xbox will offer access to Sky’s on line TV service including -- Sky Sports – a comprehensive on-demand library of thousands of programmes spanning entertainment, movies, documentaries, kids, culture, news and sports. Along with high definition movies on Zune video megastore in 1080p clarity for many videos and the convenience of on-demand, coming this fall.2

Connect with families & friends.
Xbox LIVE, the industry-leading online gaming and entertainment network, will soon offer its 20 million community members even more blockbuster partners and features, introducing a whole new era of social entertainment in the living room. Starting this Autumn, you can interact with friends on Facebook and share photos and real-time status updates right from your television, or stay connected to Twitter by reading, posting and replying to Tweets.1 And visit the Xbox LIVE Avatar Marketplace for the latest fashions or download full Xbox 360 titles to your hard drive through Games on Demand.
With all of these experiences available for the holidays and the future addition of “Project Natal,” which will work with every Xbox 360 sold today and tomorrow, the Xbox 360 system provides more fun for less.

Sorry MS, too little too late.

Didn't MS announce the price cut for the elite($299) and pro($249) everywhere else too?

This is great news. Hopefully this will prompt Activision to look at bringing the price of Modern Warfare 2 back in line with typical software RRP, though I won't hold my breath.

So wait they raised the price of what was supposed to be their affordable unit in order to slash the price of their expensive unit (that few people were probably interested in) and ended production of the middle ground unit (aka the one most people wanted)?????

Too bad they also increased the price of the arcade by 30 pounds and since they are cutting the pro model this is actually a price raise with a HDD upgrade.

Though Microsoft really likes the good press of news blogs focusing on their press release and not looking beyond this.

Wouldn't a picture from Fawlty Towers be more appropriate given the 360's failure rate?

Any word on EU price drops?

I've seen the Elite retail for 260 (down 20 Euros) but i'm certain that can't be the official price drop.

I'm getting confused by Microsoft's weird price-jumps. This very badly written press-release doesn't help either.

"...the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help
people and businesses realize their full potential."

Fuck yeah, I realized my full potential by playing Viva Piñata and Halo 3! Thank you Microsoft!

The whole press-release as a whole is really bad. I think Mr. Irving doesn't know shit about journalism.

Actually with the shit they've stripped off it. This is closer to a price hike.

But you can almost get a PS3 for that?!

Why would anyone want a 360 when a PS3 is only £50 more, yet is worth like £200 more??! And has only a 10% failure rate compared to the 360's 54% failure rate?

Not to mention endless extra features - that you don't generally have to pay for!
Crunshii's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/27/2009 08:35

@sexualchocolate,

Because you get to pay for another console while that 54% kicks in! Isn't that what everyone wants!? Come on its a STEAL!

In all honesty I am ashamed of hearing all the MS news today (Im a fanboy just in case you missed it but with a good reason). The XBOX360 is probably worth $200 (Elite version) yet they sell it as a PS3 and they will keep it that way because MS has found the golden egg to make people pay for crap.

Crunshii - i barely understand what you're saying. Sell it as a PS3?

Their "golden egg" is tricking people into buying the first one by making it the cheapest next gen console around, then getting replacement sales because " I've still got all the games" and "my friends have them"

Microsofts golden egg is nothing more than cheapnes. A cheapness they have devalued today.

@sexchoco, "Why would anyone want a 360"?

I don't know... For the games? Why did you bought your shiny PS3, to look at its glossy finish and admire your reflection?
Multiplat games DO look better on the 360 (check Digital Foundry over at eurogamer) and people do (God forbit!) enjoy 360 exclusives.

And you might apply a bit of critical thinking to that 54 per cent figure. Last year we had a supposedly 30% RROD ratio, i really doubt it would have risen 20% since then, esp after the Jasper chipset roll-out.

Don't come here often do you Shog - there's a post a couple of weeks ago about the failure rates - 54% my friend 54% - that's almost fucking criminal!

Games look good these days, i care not that one looks a couple of pixels better than another - Bettur grafix is the fucking argument of the 90's. Get with the program.

The PS3 exclusives are better. No questions asked.
The online is free. - And works perfectly despite what the 360 trolls say.
The console is only slightly more expensive now.
The blu-ray player is a brilliant step forward for anyone with a HD TV.
The controllers COME WITH CHARGERS!
The HDD is replacable without needing to buy a "special" one at 10x the value.
The PlayTV app is so fucking handy
The free music video streaming service is superb
The PSN has so many awesome and interesting games
The main user base is 18-24 year olds (a lot less screaming children)
The browser does the job and is free!
The connectivity of the PS3 is fucking superb - bluetooth, Wifi (ehem bulit in ehem) etc.

I could go on, but yeah if you want the CURRENT multiplat games to look SLIGHTLY better, but sacrifice all the above - buy a 360, and get a 46% of not needing to buy another one in a year. - Not to mention that once devs are properly developing on the PS3 and porting to the 360 the whole "games look the tinyest bit better" argument will be moot.

it will be more of the "games on the 360 need 2,3,4,5 discs" we've been hearing more of recently.

Fuck you very much my friend.

Can moderators seriously look at SexualChocolate's comment history and make him stop with his rampant PS3 advertising? This was funny in a really sad way at first, but now it is really ticking me (and I know lots of other Destructoid members) off.
As for "Gold Only"...yeah, that sucks, but tons of stuff on Xbox are gold only. Honestly, if you planed on using facebook/twitter on your Xbox instead of your computer, you are probably a person who plays games online and would be a gold member anyway.

And, to continue my rant, how is the PS3 worth 200 GBP more than the 360?

All it has is:
- an internal Blu-Ray drive, OEM bulk price should be about 40$ (since retail units can be had for 60-70$)
- a WiFi chip, 5$
- an 2 Watt internal & proprietary battery (good luck changing that when it dies out) worth 5$

50$ worth of equipment, far from 200 pounds. And while it's true that the PS3 is worth the price over in the US, over here in Europe Sony (and Ninty might i add) screw us over with that USD = EUR bullshit.

Well thanks MS, 200 enlgish notes is the sweet price spot, much better than 249 for anything Sony.

While the Arcade has increased, that's nothing to worry about, because given time it will drop again. You must also remember 360 has been out longer than PS3, so like Wii, a lower price is expected.

A new Elite with a decent new model number, might become my number two.

a WiFi chip, 5$ - someone needs to tell Ms that - what's the 360's wifi add on? £50?

And 120gb HDD for what? £120?!?! What the fuck?

And shadow, I'm not advertising the ps3 here. It's a one sided place right here, although recently it's become a little more balanced.

Why do the few PS3 supporters get all the "ban this guy" "troll" "fanboy" shit while the 360 users can just huddle together grumbling "it IS better than the Ps3 isn't it?" "Of course it is, we get teh Haloz" "Blu-ray sucks, gonna fail" "Yeah, who needs wifi" rabble rabble rabble.

The arcade price jumps makes perfect sense.

They want more people buying the Elite, so they make the price difference between the two lower...

I've never once got into psycho fits on PS3 threads about how the 360 is better, where you (and The Reborn) have done just that on literally every 360 thread up here today. I have a 360, I like it. My friend has a PS3, and I go over and play Killzone. It's fun, but I prefer my 360 because I like the exclusives and games more. There. Is that "trolling" according to you?
And I just realized my last post was on the wrong damn thread. Guess I really am a retarded microshitting fagtart. :/

LOL @ Sexychocoban... I see what you did there Shogunu.

I'd like to state a few points of myself:

1) Why does everyone keep bitching about sexualchocolate getting banned? Why should he be banned in the 1st place? Is it because he is taking one side over another? Is it because he is *GASP* COMMENTING at the COMMENTS section of the topic? Maybe it's because he's speaking his mind, yes?

2) The way I see it, all of you bitching about him are bitching in almost EVERY topic yourselfs. I can't recall how many times I see a console war topic with the same commentators bitching about other commentators. What makes you so different than Sexualchocoban (lawl)? Are you not bitching because he refuses to favor your console of choice? Are you not a console fanboy yourself? Do yourselves a favor and drop it/get over it.

3) Which brings me to point 3. The man has every rights to speak his thoughts about the console he favors, just as any one of you guys have every right to speak your minds about your console of choice. Yet, instead of talking amongst each-other in an intelligent back to back conversation, one guys insults another and everyone just starts throwing elementary insults at one another in a pointless attempt to TRY and win over an argument and prove some non-existent point. Of course, we all know there really is no point or winner in any of it, you all lose.

4) In conclusion: Each console has its pros and cons. Each console has its haters and fanboys. Each console has its exclusives and multiplatforms. There really is no winner, and there really is no end to it the console wars. You guys need to stop getting so butt-hurt and crying about getting sexualchocolate or The Reborn (or even any XBox360 fanboy) getting banned for commenting on topics and speaking their minds. If you don't agree with their statements, then act like adults and calmly explain your reasons without the use of "gay" "fanboy" "faggot" etc... but don't make pointless ban threats, it hasn't gotten you very far before nor will it get you any far at this point.

Hell, I don't even know if anyone is actually going to read any of this at this point because this topic has gotten old and abandoned by the time I find, read, and respond to it. Oh well... pants...

@Kalmah I completely agree that no-one should be banned for stating a preference. I utterly disagree, however, when it descends into direct attacks and abuse.

"Fuck you very much my friend" is not in the community spirit that Destructoid is about, I'm sure you agree.
