Xbox 360 Blu-ray support could still happen photo

Probably one of the most painful lumps that Microsoft received this generation was when the announcement that HD-DVD was officially dead went down. Most Xbox 360 fans recognized the high-definition discs for what they were, but Microsoft still tried their best to keep the format afloat. According to Spong, Microsoft is about to toss out an update to Windows that will allow users to burn Blu-ray discs from their desktop. While it could just be an advancement that the inferior operating system needed, this could also possibly signal a shift towards realizing that Blu-ray is the only way to go, which in turn teases the Xbox 360 and Blu-ray love again.

While this move doesn’t necessarily negate their stance that Blu-ray will never come to the Xbox 360, it doesn’t mean that it won’t. Certainly having your company’s operating system embrace the medium is a step towards that direction. My guess is that an Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive will never happen. Most people that own Blu-rays already have a PlayStation 3. Plus, with the Netflix deal, I really see no need for Microsoft to tussle with optional drives anymore.

What do you guys think? Would you still like to see an Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive? Or is just one console with the capability enough?

Most Box owners realized that HD-DVD was actually a somewhat useful format? This is news to me.

Not so long ago, the hd drive was £120. Now, i can pick a brand new one up, with 3 free movies, for 24.99.
see, its not dead, its just cheaper.

Why not put the money towards a ps3 and then have all the gaming options? I personally don't want another plug in thing to clutter up my entertainment center. Capital MEH.

As I undersand it, they are going to update the burn software that comes with Windows. A BluRay drive is recognized as an Sata drive like any dvd/cdrom drive by windows. So basically a minor update and I seriously doubt that this is a sign for a pro-Bluray campaign by MS.

another add-on will be useless, unless is cheap. blu-ray players haven't hit the mass market because of the bloated price. if they can make a player with a competetive price they can score something.

and maybe for a change release some damn games in the format..

Another add-on for the box in the form of an external blu-ray drive would make absolutely no sense at all. By the time MS could offer the drive at a competitive price and at no loss, stand-alone blu-ray players would be amazingly cheap.

I would pick up a BluRay 360 add-on if it was under $100, otherwise I'll just wait for a PS3. My plasma is 1080i (I was an early adopter) so I'm in no rush. Just waiting for the price drop and so far it hasn't happened.

No thanks. I already have an HD DVD drive. I don't need another add-on. Plus I'm grabbing me a PS3 soon enough.

I don't see Blu-Ray ever coming to XBOX in any shape, form, or fashion. They need to stick to their downloadable movie strategy. There is a lot more money to be made there.

Imho I beleive it will be a matter of time. Microsoft will have to figure away to add this to an new sku or an add on. As this generation gets further along, Game will be gettin g bigger and require far more space. With HD becoming the norm over the next couple of years and with the public realizing that the difference between upscaled and natural Hd is so apparent. The public will demand the same hd graphics on all consoles. I even believe the wii will have to figure a way to add blue ray. I know many wont mind changing several disk through out a play through, but far more gamers will. This is what will push the change just like when Sony pushed DVD soon Nintendo followed.I also feel as demand and cheap manufactor costs this will alow for implication of blue ray to both the Wii and the 360. I dont care either way I already own a PS3 and 360 and I as a 360 owner sure wold love true 1080p native instead of 720p upscaled the differnce is so apparent or maybe I am just spoiled, but as most of you will find out once you go HD you wont want anything else the clarity is just out of this world.

Lets be honest, the 360 dvds are starting to present a storage problem. Right now it's being solved by 4-5 disc RPG's, 2 disc racing games, etc. It is not the end of the world, but an inconvenience. Everyone seems to say that Microsoft isn't interested in a large storage capacity disc like blu ray or hddvd and instead are going the direction of digital distribution. But we all know that even next generation, we will not see digital distribution take over, but only become more prevalent. Even today, more and more games are coming to PSN and XBLA, not just small games, but things like Burnout Paradise, Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty, and Warhawk (large multi-gig games). It's obvious that this is the way things are going, but not yet, not fully. Microsoft needs a HD storage plan, maybe not this generation, but next generation for sure. If they don't go blu-ray, and go with a proprietary disc then they've divided the market again. Even with Netflix offering HD streaming, I still think the majority of consumers would rather physically hold something in their hands then to know its stored on a hard drive. Digital Distribution will take over, but it's going to be a gradual process before you see companies like gamestop disappear.

well, if they release an add-on drive that costs less than the PS3, then I am much more likely to buy that instead of the PS3. So if MS thinks it's good business for them to take away business from Sony, then they may want to investigate that avenue - and arguing for buying a PS3 over an add-on drive because of "plug clutter" is stupid - last I checked, the PS3 wasn't running on wireless electricity...

I'm sorry Brad and I don't mean to be a dick, but is this such a slow day that you feel the need even bother speculating like this? This is ridiculous, and their is nothing that points to MS going with Blu-Ray for the 360. It just isn't going to happen, and truthfully, this entire blog is a waste of space.

Also, OSX doesn't really own. I suppose if everyone used OSX instead of Windows, you'd be saying the same thing. Certainly you don't think that the losers who sit home and make viruses and other shit to destroy computers would bother with Apple products, do you? Apple computers are still far behind PCs that run Windows in terms of penetration and install-base; If this is reversed one day, expect your precious OSX to be destroyed just as easily. Why would a hacker or whatever bother with OSX when they can ruin everyone's computer experiences?

Windows isn't perfect, but that's no reason to be hate on it. It's perfectly functional for me, but then again I've never been one to follow the trendy folk.

I don't think entirely ancillary add-ons kill consoles. The HD-DVD add-on was required to play all of no games on the 360. The only thing the first add-on killed was itself.

@artson
Not necessarily. 1080p for me is flat-out not worth the cost at this point, and probably won't be for years to come. Also worth mentioning is that I already own a 60" 1080p TV...it's the cost of movie purchases on BluRay that would drown me. Just not worth it for a difference that is mostly "meh" to me.

If Microsoft were smart they'd stick Blu Ray into the 360. Into, not some crappy external device like the HD DVD player.

They doesn't have to do it for every model, just the Elite would do. At a stroke it would remove a major advantage of the PS3 over the 360.

BTW its pretty clear the reason they never did it with HD DVD was they didn't want to be stuck with an albatross if the format died. Pretty smart in hindsight, but that reason no longer exists. Stick the BD drive in the 360 and Sony will lose more than it would gain.

While I think it would be good, if it were me, I'd just buy a PS3. You get the best blu-ray player on the market and a whole gaming system too. Believe me, I've tried other players and the PS3 is definitely the best.

Either way, I'd be happy to see it happen just to know that more people are seeing how awesome blu-ray is.

M$ needs to do something to keep the Elite SKU alive as the Pro model now has HDMI and a 60GB HDD, so you are paying $100 for an HDMI cord and 60 more GB? At the very least they need to put WiFi into the Elite, preferably with a BD drive.
Too many people are picking the PS3 as it is a great console and pretty much the best BD player.

I'd guess you're in the minority. For $200 more you could have a whole new gaming system that was actually built to play blu-ray. But hey, to each their own. Either way you'd be helping me out because at least some of that money will be going to sony and I like their games and hardware.

We wont see a blu-ray drive in the 360. MS knows if someone wants a player they will probably buy a PS3 on top of their 360. We might see one or something with higher capacity in MS's next system but there really is no reason for them to put a standalone drive with the 360. Building one into the 360 isnt really an option either not only because of cost but because the affordable drives are slower then the dvd drive thats in the 360 right now. That would mean slower load times and who wants that?

I mean..I suppose they could upgrade the elite with a built in blu-ray player but at this stage in the game I dont see much of a point, like i said if someone wanted a blu-ray player they either have one, would buy a ps3, or are waiting for a cheap dedicated player.

I think if Microsoft had made their games on HD-DVDs it would have worked. I mean, UMDs are only made for PSPs and people shell out cash for those movies, so I hear...

@deathslayer - I agree.

@wonky360 - People are not buying ps3's specifically for blu-ray, as nice as hd movies are no one care about movies to the extent to completely drive a console one way or another. From the look of your name, I won't be getting through to you, but the ps3's been outselling the 360 almost all year, and it isn't just because it has Blu-ray. Blu-ray is just like a nice bonus.
