Xbox 360 Arcade coming to Japan photo

With sales of Xbox 360s notoriously and consistently low in Japan, Microsoft is doing everything in their power to entice the denizens of the land of the rising sun into purchasing their products.  In another attempt at the aforementioned spread, Microsoft is releasing their Xbox 360 Arcade version in Japan come March 6th.

The Xbox 360 Arcade will retail for the same price as existing models (27,800 yen) but comes bundled with five Live Arcade games, a 256MB memory card unit, a wireless controller, and features an HDMI port.  The release of the Arcade version is occurring in conjunction with the release of several Xbox 360 Platinum titles, with Microsoft likely hoping the simultaneous releases garner enough attention to result in an increase in sales.

Somehow I suspect this won't have the impact Microsoft is hoping it will, though with Live Arcade rife as it is with "casual" games, this may be just the boost Microsoft needs to finally become big in Japan.

Why bother? Seriously. I've been to several gaming stores in Japan. Their Xbox section was thinner than a supermodel on an anorexic binge.

This has made me realize something: Japan is an entirely different market than America.

Microsoft is forgetting a key fact about this unique demographic, if it's not pink & white and small enough, it's not a hit in Japan.

When will they stumble upon Hello XBox?

BINGO! All or nothing man. I hate downgraded versions of anything. That goes for you too, 40GB PS3.

I say give it up in Japan. If I were them, I'd focus more on the European market.

And they are even going to drop the price on Feb 14th. And probably the premiums and elites as well.

@GuitarAtomik: Hell no don't give up on Japan it's a HUGE market. I'm sure if they succeed it will totally outweigh the cost of years of trying.

Sure it doesn't mean we can't still make fun of them for trying.

They play different games there on Japan, thats why they cant sell the broken boxes there... That and because the xbox brand is still "new" in the japonese market.

Still not going to help. The Japanese are too xenophobic to accept good things from Americans.

If the only way to sell more Xbox's in Japan is to make more games like Eternal Sonata, I say give up. That game was one of the worst I've ever bought. That's what I get for trying to expand my horizons.

The only way I can see this system selling in Japan is if they strip out all models save the Elite, package it with 4 games and sell it for JPY20,000.

Otherwise.......... FAIL.
