Xbox '1080' prototype looks portable, silly photo

Xbox fanatics seem to be obsessed with the idea of a portable Xbox. The other portable game systems out there? Not good enough. Microsoft or bust, I guess they're thinking. Perhaps this concept by Carl Archambeault would fit the bill for them.

Carl calls this the Xbox 1080. It sports a pop-up LCD display that can be retracted into the system for maximum portability. On its face are all the buttons from the controller that you've come to know, plus a few extra for media control and menu functions. The whole idea was to combine the best parts of both the Xbox 360 console and the Zune media player. 

Before you get too excited, know that this is just a non-working prototype. Besides, where would the game go? Nevermind that this looks like it would be a bit uncomfortable to hold.

That all being said, I'd take a MS portable if they made one. A little XBLA-only portable could be cool.

I guess it goes along well with the traditional "XBOX HUEG" theme, but unless the thumbsticks are retractable it wouldn't last long being carried around.

I like the idea, but really? I thought MS had no intention of going portable. It would be silly to try to cut into that market. Nintendo has had a ridiculously strong hold on it since the Game & Watch. I love the idea of a XBLA Portable/Zune HD device, that would be sweet. But is there really room for it out there against the PSP Go and the iPhone?

If Microsoft wants to get into the portable market they should get a third party to do the hardware, like say Logitec. Then Microsoft can focus on IPs for the device and not on red rings.

Connecting all the functionality of the Zune HD to a gaming device would be sweet, make it 3G capable and you've get a PSP Go killer. I don't know what else, but have someone else build it.

That thing is an abomination. It would be a hard fight for MS in the portable gaming business. The DS is a monster and the PSP picks up where the DS is lacking.

Having said that... I think you're on to something, Dale, with the XBLA only handheld. I would get one if it had two little analog nubs and all of the right buttons. Trials HD on the go. YES please.

I'll stick with the Dslite till Nintendo Finally releases VC for the DSi. I spent a lot time on the DS and all were very enjoyable and tense memories. I don't see myself switching just anytime soon but I hold optimism to what this can do if it comes true.

Over in the corner, there is some guy with his brand new Xbox 1080 playing Halo on the free wifi service who is screaming his guts out about spawn killing or total rape-age or bursting out his best 'your mom' jokes!

No thank you, Microsoft. I don't want fanboys wandering around public places ruining everything. Let's keep them holed up in their parent's basements, please.

its cool to see neet MODs, but there is no way you could get that Into you pocket easily.

It's way too soon for MS to get into the handheld business. Nintendo has dominated for so long, and if Sony couldn't do it, there's no way MS will be able to. Not that I won't buy an MS handheld if they make one next year or something, lol.

This looks like My First Handheld or some shit.

Still, mad props to the guy for actually building it, regardless if it works or not. I'm just wondering how it's possible that MS, who we all know loves making money, wouldn't look into this idea. A lot of people want a portable Xbox, so why not?
