XBLA Quake title canned

XBLA Quake title canned photo

According to John Carmack, id’s Xbox Live Arcade rendition of Quake Arena has been put to bed. The information was relayed to an audience at this year’s QuakeCon, and thunderous applause was not the response. Carmack outlined that all is not lost for another utilization of Quake if their browser based Quake Live catches on and performs well with users. Carmack cited the reason for the cancellation was publisher unresponsiveness.

…right now the publishers aren't all that interested in a multiplayer-focused game on [XBLA], and they're probably right. Quake for this coming year is Quake Live.
I haven’t got into the beta for the browser-based Quake Live, but I have a feeling that the game will be just as populated with excessively skilled players as older Quake games, thus making a good experience for me impossible. It’s interesting that Carmack cites unwillingness on the publisher side for a “multiplayer-focused” XBLA game. I guess Uno and Texas Hold’em got pushed out of the door at just the right time.

I would say "boo", but how the hell can you play Q3A with a gamepad? There is a reason they put Unreal Tournament on the consoles... :P

Makes sense considering that they're launching Quake Live for free. Why would anyone even want to spend money on it?

Color me not surprised. Multiplayer focused Arcade game...just doesn't sound right saying it.

There have been plenty of multiplayer-centric game son Live Arcade. In addition to the ones you mentioned: Bomberman Live, Marathon, all of the board game adaptations, Undertow. I'm not exactly sure why they're shying away from them now.

Porting old PC shooters to the 360 isn't that great of an idea anyway. Most of them just look old and don't compare gameplay-wise to the newer generation of console shooters. As a console gamer, I also don't get a nostalgic feeling from PC games I've never played, but I would buy Goldeneye or an online remake of Halo 1 in a second.

I really don't see what the point of an Xbox Live version of Quake 3 Arena would be. Especially with id releasing Quake Live for free in a browser on the internetz. I mean why would anyone pay money for a game they could play for free in a browser? Oh wait... that's pretty much what the Wii is based on isn't it?

Quake Live is supposed to have a matchmaking system that will let you play against equally-skilled opponents so hopefully they've got that covered. I'm really excited about Quake Live, Q3A is the ultimate competetive 1v1 DM game and QLive will hopefully generate some new interest in it.

Fuck Quake, where's Doom 2? That's right iD, put Doom 1 on XBLA then neglect the true classic. Assholes.

Also seconded on Goldeneye. Fuck you Nintendo for fucking that one up. Assholes.

@ Stevesan;

Is the in-game advertising intrusive, or haven't they put it in yet?

The ad-system is basically a few billboards strewn about the maps in a very integrated style.

Whether they're intrusive or not, however, depends on the player, really. When I'm in the zone and concentrating on a duel I never notice them.

Thanks, Amp. :O)

The first I heard about Quake Live was when I looked in the games magazine in the post today.
