XBLA no longer nerfed?

XBLA no longer nerfed? photo

We had our own inside sources and could never really say much, but now that 1UP's Luke Smith is babbling about it, we may as well come clean with some info that many have speculated but we've known about for a little while now: Microsoft is raising the XBLA download cap to 250MB.

What does this mean? This means no more shatty Live Arcade games that are gimped because they have to stick to a 50MB limit. Hello innovation.

From Lukems:

The Xbox Live Arcade file size was capped at 50 MB to accommodate consumers who purchased the hard drive-less Xbox 360 Core SKU (those consumers had to use one of Microsoft's memory cards). Under condition of anonymity, sources revealed to 1UP that the file size for Xbox Live Arcade titles has been increased from 50 MB to 250 MB and with Microsoft's approval, that size can be expanded to 450 MB. When asked for comment on the reported change to file size, Microsoft said, "We do not comment on rumor and speculation and so we can not confirm that rumor.

I guess you could still call this a rumor, but believe us, this is and will be made official in the near future.

Have they announced that they'll be phasing out the Core system? I expect that to follow, probably with a price drop.

Dear Sega / Microsoft- please put the following on Live Arcade:

1: Virtua Fighter 1 (Arcade)
2: Daytona USA (Arcade)

And throw in some online play too.

I was perfectly happy with the 50 meg limit. Sometimes I prefer a quick simple game.

you guys shouldn't get your hopes up on the zephyr. it's complete vaporware at this point, and i wouldn't go putting any eggs in that basket.

also, what do you guys think this means? think we could get old playstation, saturn, and n64 titles on xbla now? i don't know how all the licensing stuff would work. i mean will games that came out for playstation one that had a third party publisher and developer have to go through any legality and licensing red tape before being okayed for xbla? i'd think that rare's old banjo kazooie games would be okay as they own that ip but then nintendo published it for n64 *confusing* so i have no idea. there are a few old psone and saturn games i'd gladly pay fifteen bucks or more for if they'd put em up for download with a little improved graphics/extras and live functionality.

summa, anybody, know how if this is possible and/or how it would work?

my God this is really major news. Theres so many games like Multiplayer Battletech that can now be done by indie devs without having to go the full blown commercial retail route.

I guess this is good news. If you ask me, this is how it should have been from the start, so I'm not really that impressed. Does anyone else remember hearing a while back that Sega was thinking of putting Dreamcast games on the XBLA?

When I get back to the states, it seems like the 360 will be a good purchase. Higher download availability and possibly higher hard drive space for the same price. And by the time I get back, all of the good games should be at a lower price as well.

I don't think we'll see the light of "Zephyer" or whatever for at least another year.

So wait, you're telling me that all those times you were trumpeting the PS3 download store because it has a higher limit while lambasting everything else, you were lying, knowing better but being smug about what you knew under a (non-existant) embargo? Very cute.

@Snaileb
It very well could be, but I can always dream. We should cross our fingers and hope Microsoft is smart enough to bring it out sooner rather then later.

About time, very cool that developers won't be forced to shoehorn their games into that 50 meg limit! And I agree, what the fuck is going on in that photo?
