XBL bannings already getting worked around photo

Well, we knew it would happen eventually, but modders are already finding exploits to get themselves around Microsoft's recent banning spree. Utilizing firmware modifications, those sick and corrupt mod fiends are claiming to be able to make their deviant Xbox 360 consoles undetectable by Microsoft's all-seeing eye of bannihilation.

The workaround uses a firmware upgrade for the TS-H943 DVD drives, which you use to play backups of Xbox 360 software and apparently renders your console's less than legal changes invisible ... for now.

The game of Microsoft/modder one-upmanship begins then, almost like a round of Command & Conquer, except not as much fun, having no missile silos, and not being anything like Command & Conquer.

But does this remove any previous bannination? If not, then every generation of ban-dodging tricks will get an entire "generation" of consoles banned when the jig is up.

That's an article from Joystiq (as noted by the thread starter).

I bet Summa's proud of this moment.

@BlackDove

and CVG had the story before Joystiq. your point?

and xbox-scene before CVG.

from what i've read, previously banned consoles will be able to get back onto live... but details are still scarce, and very vague. something about making the console invisible. blah blah blah. but no mention on how.

the real question here is this...

it took microsoft a pretty long while to start detecting and banning consoles. if the new firmware voids their technique for detection, how long will it take for microsoft to find another way of doing it? did the modders just get the upper hand for a longer bit of time than you would expect?

Who the ALL YUKEN! is Jim Sterling needs to make a blog.

NOW.

MusashiX2:

That depends entirely on the reasons *why* Microsoft took so long to detect and ban consoles. It's theorized that it was a strategic move on MS' part to get people really hooked on XBL, literally allowing the modders to enjoy their service for a while, before taking it away from them.

Now, I don't know one way or the other what MS was doing, but their timing was perfect with the Halo 3 Beta and all. All I know is, my console's banned and I bought it brand new, and Microsoft are refusing to fix it for me. :(

I don't think this is a surprise to anyone. The 360 firmware has already been cracked, so I'm not that shocked it took this little time to get around the new security.

@Jim

i guess it's just one of those things we will never know because we are not on the inside of microsoft. my hypothesis about it would be a bit of a hybrid of the two theories. i figure they didn't know how to properly detect the custom firmwares at first, but learned later on, then waited to ban people until the halo 3 beta. i think if they knew how to detect the firmwares right off the bat, they would have done it immediately since at the time there probably was no plan for a halo3 beta and they already had plenty of people on live.

Command and Conquer is the WORST game on 360, no? I have never seen such a broken model since my brother dropped my Lego spaceship.

Well, I never said it was Command & Conquer 3. :)

That said, I've only played the demo of C&C3, I was thinking about picking it up though.

I was expecting the free download of Texas Hold 'Em to be the banhammer for modders actually. Rather surprised it was the Halo 3 Beta (Although that makes sense).

Modding a 360 is only for piracy, if there was a good homebrew scene like the OG Xbox then fine, but there isn't.

I'm keeping my 360 as clean as possible. Maybe one day I'll get one to mod (and keep offline), but I don't really see much point in it besides enjoying cheap single-player games, and gamefly takes care of that for me already.

There arent a lot of good games out to force people mod a 360. The good games that are already out are a few not even 10. SO why mod a 360? people really need to download every single piece of shit game for what? to next week download another and not bein able to really enjoy them?

PS2 have a LOT of games but is also a OLD console. In time when there is a REAL need to mod because there are just too many good games coming then some varied and real solution to backup games will come.

Until then support the additional 10 good games comming for the next 2 years. We could even get lucky and expect up to 15 good games!!!

Playing any RTS on a console is a shame.
Also I support taking money from M$oft by modding your xbox/360/whatever. :P

@Iceciro:

I agree with your "playing RTS games on a console is a shame" comment ... however, I do disagree with the taking money from MS bit and here's why.

I know a lot of people modded their original XBox for media server uses as well as usage of Linux on their console. At the time of the original XBox, there was not a online initative to take the majority of the games online as there is now with the 360. Microsoft does owe it to themselves and to every person who owns a 360 to improve the online gaming experience as a whole.
