X10: A sandbox shooter and whole lot more: Halo: Reach photo

I've never been a fan of Halo because I'm too cool for school, and popular games are hella lame, and no one cool likes what everyone likes. I also wear thick rimmed glasses and listen to pretentious music, so that makes me a better person than you. So there.

Yet -- this is a big “yet” -- after what I've been shown of Halo: Reach, I think I might break down my pretensions and accept what is here: Halo: Reach looks really, really cool.

While I strongly suspect that fans of the Halo franchise wouldn't expect anything less, there's quite a bit new in Reach, possibly making it the definitive game in the series. Follow me down the Halo trail, and get a new vision in a world without Master Chief.

Halo: Reach (Xbox 360)
Developer: Bungie
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
To be released: Fall 2010

Halo: Reach, as Bungie was happy to point out, is probably the most ambitious title that it has ever made. While fans of Halo 3 might decry the nature of ODST, it looks like Halo: Reach is a proper prequel, a game that is going to take the series in a new direction, as opposed to keeping the same-old, same-old. The Plot, multiplayer, and the base engine are all brand new to the series. That's a big deal right there.

Reach, as many of you know, is a prequel to the original series. It's 2552 on the planet of Reach, and it's the last line of defense against the covenant. You play as the latest recruit to Noble Team, an elite squad of Spartan 3s. While you are the newest member of the squad (replacing some dead guy), you get plenty of face time with the rest of the crew. It's a racial and gender mixed squad, right in line with the politically correct ambitions of the day. Here's the rough'n'gruff leader named Carter 259! Here's his second in command, a no-sh*t badass lady who probably spells her name (Kat 320) with a K! Here's the Asian sniper named Jun 266! Another girl! A burly guy who might be black! A crazy member of the team with a shadowy past! Oh Em Gee!

As you can see, not being a fan of the Halo series, the plot here is not the thing that's exciting. It's inspired by The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven, but... yawn. Can we expect a 12 year-old Spartan tactical genius next? I mean, let's take this idyllic '80s Saturday afternoon baloney all the way, m'kay?

However, May 3 does actually excite me. This is the big beta launch for the game, so everything I was shown stands for what fans can look forward to playing in a couple of months. Many of your standard Halo modes will be coming, with levels like “Powerhouse,” a cliff-side level taking place on a hydroelectric center. While I was shown that one arena, it looks amazingly good, much better than even the recent ODST. The May beta will bring a bunch of these levels and modes, with a couple new ones players have never seen before.

Multiplayer levels are now based more so on the single-player campaign. Insanely (and it was hard to understand how it's going to play out exactly) Halo: Reach is an effing sandbox game. I don't think anyone outside of Bungie has a clear idea how this is going to play out (and they're not letting on just yet) but there is a guy whose entire job is to be the sandbox designer (it's in his title). While details are slim, Bungie made it seem like there are going to be many different ways a player is able to approach a mission.

Oddly, expect the triumphant return of health packs. Seems like the folks at Bungie like the idea of strategically placing them all over multiplayer maps. To this I'm completely nonchalant, and who the hell knows, it might be the groundbreaking thing they want it to be.

Now, the biggest reason I am excited about Halo: Reach are the visuals. I will say it here: I have never been impressed with a Halo game before when it came to the looks. (Sorry, but personal opinion.) However, Bungie has rebuilt almost the entire Halo engine, and it effin' shows. This game is incredible in action. When some games this day and age struggle with textures, Halo: Reach has some of the most in-depth looking levels, terrain, and weapons I've ever seen on a 360 title. Even the facial animations of your squad mates has gone through the roof. While supposedly amazingly animated games like Assassin's Creed 2 (and a whole lot more) struggle with good looking facial animation, Halo: Reach rocks it in this department.

Here's some numbers on what this game can do: There are four times the polygons of Halo 3 in Halo: Reach, for example. Halo 3 had no more than 100 colliding particles, and Halo: Reach has thousands. I'm not one for being a "graphics whore," but damn skippy, does this game look fine.

Now, among other things, the Covenant Elite is going to make a comeback in a big way. There was also a new enemy called the Skirmisher, which looked like a kitty/doggy version of the covenant. Expect big teeth.

Weapons, too, have been boosted with looks and handling. Besides looking a million times better over Halo 3, weapons like the Needler and the assault rifle look "Oh My God" good. Those graphical enhancements were applied to those weapons, and they look great. Crazily, the Needler is now white, and if you skewer a foe with three or four needles, there will be a nice explosion to reward you. Neat!

Armor Abilities are also a new thing. Taking a note from Modern Warfare or Red Faction: Guerilla, these Armor Abilities will be persistent abilities that you can use as much as you'd like, and are determined before the match. This is stuff like speed boosts, and could be a real game changer for Halo fans.

When looking at Halo: Reach, I'm going to leave you with this quote from the short documentary I was shown: “This is the definitive Halo by the people who made Halo.” You can better believe they look like they are backing this up. I've never been excited about these games, and you know what? I'm going to be online with the rest of you come May 3.

@Ben Perlee: You forgot to mention that there will be night-time missions that allow you to use stealth tactics!

Also, I heard that melee attacks will not be instant kill anymore? Any news on that? Any news on a sprint button?

Looks pretty awesome (though I still hate health packs). I just hope the gameplay is different enough from the last ones and I REALLY hope they do half as good a job on the story/plot as the books do for once.

You know, I kinda got my fill from Halo 3. Despite 0 excitement for ODST, I got it and enjoyed it a lot, but still felt tired of the formula. That being said...after watching the viddoc...man. I'm so excited for this game.

Graphics schmraphics! I'm in this for the gameplay. I agree that the characters are pretty cliched, and because "where there's smoke there's fire," this game is probably doomed to have a cheesy plot like most of the others despite trying to be hardcore. Nominating myself to edit the story for Bungie.

I was hoping they'd build on ODST's rough idea of having an "open world" Halo game. Now I just have to hope that they pull it off, though I've got no doubt that they will.

Bungie always uses the term "sandbox" to describe their environments. They mean the battlefield with all the AI, vehicles, weapons, and objects interacting. Don't get the wrong idea, this isn't going to be a sandbox style game like GTA or Farcry.

It will still be a linear story driven game. You will just have more options in battle with things like stealth attacks.

@TehPeanut

I'd have to agree with you except for one fact. I was let down by ODST, and for the past 2 months or so I've seen it as Halo: Who gives a f**k. But after the viddoc, I'm changing my opinion..

I may not be a Halo fan and I may have a surly disposition when it comes to Microsoft, but Bungie makes great stuff. No matter who you are you cannot deny that Bungie is very competant.

If this is to be their last Halo game from their their team, I expect it will be absolutely, devastatingly, unequivocally great. I think they ran into issues with Halo 2 and 3 where it was just sequelitis taking over. But give them room to innovate their own product and you get Reach and ODST.

Honestly, I'm more interested in seeing what Bungie does after Halo. Hopefully it'll be multiplat, but either way I'm interested in seeing what they do next. After all, we all know that at worst Halo: Reach will be an 8/10 and that's not likely the case.

although everything mentioned in this preview is just part of the latest vidoc which is probably more worth watching as you actually get to see the said new visuals.

also, not sure why they've changed the colour of the needler, guess its part of the prequel idea and that things in the 'past' were different.

No offense to you, Mr. PerLee, but I would have preferred for Hamza to have done this preview. You do a good enough job with passing along the new information about it, but lacking the experience with the past games, some of your views on it are not in line with a Halo fan's.

I will not be surprised if this game becomes a GOTY nominee. I couldn't say the same for ODST, but damn if this game doesn't indeed look like the definitive Halo. This in all likely hood will be the game that Halo 2, 3, and ODST tried to be:

The one that lives up to the first Halo. Hell, at this point, it might even surpass it.

I'm hoping for a little alone time in this game. I liked Halo: Combat Evolved and ODST much more than the others because you didn't have a contingent of marines around you at all times. It's hard to feel like a badass Spartan when there's a marine screaming "You stole my kill!" every few seconds.

Also, what's the word on co-op in this? Splitscreen? 4 Player?

I mean, I certainly could have spent time with a lot more games, and better ones too. How is the preview where I talk about how a game looks great and seems like something new and interesting is all of a sudden invalid because it's not the only series I play online? Give me a break.

@sickNasty has the right idea. When bungie says this will be a "sandbox game" what they mean (and what they have always said at least since halo 2) is that this game will not be tightly scripted with enemies that come at you the same way and from the same spot every time you play, ala half-life or modern warfare. Nothing at all wrong with those games (especially HL. old skool.), but essentially they are emphasizing that they haven't changed their focus on great interaction with AI enemies, and weapons and vehicles in the battlefield that give you a bunch of different ways to approach a given mission.

@captainbus, there will still be the assassination melee attacks. however, now there is the option to do what essentially comes down to a "flourish" assassination which pulls you out to third-person for a second and does a more flashy animation for the insta-kill. sprint is one f the options for the armor abilities that you can use. it probably won't be a dedicated anytime-use sprint though. think more like the quick-use equipment in halo 3, except this is a dedicated one that you don't switch out and can use more than once (i am thinking like an onscreen meter that refills after you use it).

the graphics in motion do this game so much more justice. i am a fan of the series, and even i was worried about them just reusing the halo 3 engine again. screenshots didn't help that. but in motion this is an altogether different animal. i am reddy for the beta nao pls. #kthxbai

Ben: "How is the preview where I talk about how a game looks great and seems like something new and interesting is all of a sudden invalid because it's not the only series I play online? Give me a break."

Wow Ben, you read into that A LOT. He was just saying, with some of this new news, he (a Halo fan, I assume) would have appreciated the reporting with some of the enthusiasm that other Halo fans have. Right now, it's like watching the Super Bowl as a Saints fan and watching it with a bunch of Seahawks fans. He's definitely not saying your article is worth nothing or "invalid," or that your opinion is worth nothing because Halo "isn't the only series you play online." Jesus, give US a break. Chill out.
