X-Play airs screencap of Rock Band 2 song selection screen [Update] photo

When Rock Band 2 was announced yesterday, Harmonix wasn’t giving any details of the game’s song selection, saying only that the game has “the strongest playlist we've ever assembled.” Now, we’ve got a preview of that. Dtoider power-glove has sent in a doozy of a tip from the ScoreHero forums, that bastion of die-hard music game fans around the world.

According to the forumites, tonight’s episode of X-Play showed a screenshot from the song selection screen in Rock Band 2 -- you can see it for yourself above. It shows the cross-game DLC compatibility that Harmonix promised: note that the last two songs, Boston’s “More Than A Feeling” and “All The Small Things” by Blink-182, were made available as DLC for Rock Band.

Here are the other nine tracks, and their presumed artists:

  • Dream Theater - “Panic Attack” (could also be Finger Eleven)
  • System of a Down - “Chop Suey”
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - “Give It Away”
  • Foo Fighters - “Everlong”
  • Kim Wilde - “Kids in America”
  • Motörhead - “Ace of Spades”
  • Cheap Trick - “Hello There”
  • Journey - “Any Way You Want It”
  • The Who - “Pinball Wizard”

Here’s some more in-depth analysis of the screenshot. Note the “2” to the left of the first nine tracks, and the different circular icon next to the two songs from Rock Band -- it’s the arrow that signifies DLC, so that’s how they’re differentiating between songs on the Rock Band 2 game disc and downloaded tracks.

Either way, that purported tracklist has me in a tizzy. I want this game NOW.

Also, JOURNEEEEEEEY!

[power-glove lives on the ScoreHero forums]

[Update: The ever-so-gracious power-glove has provided us with a significantly improved image. It confirms that the icons next to the Boston and Blink-182 songs are the old download arrow icons; the post has been updated to reflect this.]

Guys. That's not DLC.

Look, there's a score besides it. That's the real stuff right there. Looks like the music store design is becoming the tour design.

MOAR JOURNEY.

@Cobra

Hey Spacecat, there's one song on that list that was DLC for RB1.

GC, makes a good point, it looks HMX, decided to take the in-game music store design and implement it into the main song selection menu.

Ace of Spades was the best song from GH1, so this is very good news.

It does look like the in-game menu mirrors the current store, which is a good move, I'd say.

I'm flipping over Journey, but I hope this isn't HMX's a-game stuff. Because World Tour has some mind-blowing stuff that's going to really strike a chord with the masses. Unless RB 2 ships with all of Escape ...

Hrmmm... if RB2 songs have a 2, and DLC has a star... does that mean RB1 songs will have a 1, and be somehow playable in RB2?

not DLC, but RB1 songs, like Won't get Fooled Again, and Molly Hatchet.

I can only hope that Panic Attack is from Dream Theater. I have already told myself that I would hold out and only buy GH4, but DT beckons me.

@Kinji: I don't see how they're going to be able to pull that off. The Rock Band songs are stuck on the Rock Band disc, whereas the DLC is on the console's hard drive (so it can be accessed by both games).

Samit: There's a theoretical possibility that they could make it possible (through some app downloaded from Rock Band 2) to move Rock Band 1 files onto your hard drive. That would be fucking awesome, as there are ten or so songs I hate to leave behind.

EVERLONG??? Ok, well I was thinking about GH4 since it has Everlong. If RB2 has Muse, and promises of more Muse on the way, I'm sold. I just hope they make a better drum set. After seeing the drum set for GH4, I like that one better. But I haven't played on that one yet, so I don't know how it plays. But I like the idea of having cymbals.

Hmm...there are 9 songs in that section. If HMX keeps the nine tier structure, that means the main setlist could have 81 songs on it.

I guess this is why Pinball Wizard won't be on The Who DLC coming out. I cannot wait to play Ace of Spades and Pinball Wizard, those are two of my favorite songs ever. I also can't wait to play Journey. I guess Rock Band just got my money, couple these with the fact that AC/DC might be on Rock Band and I'll be forking over $180+ to Harmonix this September, and I'll get GH4 for the guitar if the instruments ain't cross compatible.

Yea I hope there is some way to put all the songs from RB1 on the the HD cause there is a bunch of songs I love and don't want to have to switch disks just to play a few songs. What if they were just like screw it, and made all RB1 songs FREE to DL???

If that IS Panic Attack by Dream Theater then it better be one of, if not THE, last songs.

It's over 8 minutes long and SEVERAL of those minutes are guitar solos with barely a break (if any) in between them.

I've said it ever since the first Guitar Hero; just about any Dream Theater song would make an AMAZING boss (final) song for a guitar game.

Maybe now they finally have the balls to put one of their songs. Time will tell...

Oh lawd, I just nerdgasm'd.

But really now, this was a great way to start my 'day'. For my own musical taste, both RB2 and WT are shaping up to be eargasmic experiences. Although it's expected, it is a bit disappointing to see songs that have/are appearing on the rival game franchise. But I guess I'm just being picky over excellent news.

And I love the fact that 'Anyway You Want It' can now be experienced as a 'band', rather than a solo effort in GH3. Really excited about that.
