has anyone actually played this game properly, ie not saving it twice every turn and loading it whenever someone dies or even gets wounded
THIS GAME IS AMAZING. Definitely in my top 3 games, and this patch is amazing news. Too bad the series declined to awfulness after the first game (Terror was still great, just hard).
@X3Ent3nte I've played through the game several times and the later tries I found it was cooler if I let my squad change and stuff as casualties arose, and gave stuff like armor and psipacks only to people who made it to higher ranks. But yeah, the first couple times I definitely had a team of super soldiers protected by the power of frequent saves.

I've been replaying it recently and this is awesome news. Now I can play against an enemy that doesn't wipe me out on the first turn!
@X3Ent3nte: Yeah, I usually save before a mission and I don't save until it's done, no matter the cost. Probably explains why I've never finished it, even on easy!

Xente, first time i ever played it was on the PS1 WITHOUT a memory card! So yeh played through and completed the game suffering every loss without even the option to tempt me. Due to this it had to be one of the most riveting game experiences I have ever had.
The only character to sruvive the final mission on mars was my supreme commander, so close to losing the game... Amazing experience :).

X-Com is great. Proves that a great game can be made with mb, not just gb. I remember my first mission. Landed at night "HIDDEN MOVEMENT". Suddenly, a laser fries one of my soldiers. He crumbles to the ground with a short scream. One by one the soldiers leave the landing area and are picked off until the last one cowers by the landing ramp until the snipers come for him.

yup completed it several times, saving can be critical but sometimes you just have to let troops go. once you have floating gear and psyionics the game changes pace considerably and its the aliens on the run.. damn i need to download it again.
XCOM will always be close to my heart i hope 2k do a good job >_<
my older bro bought the game when i was a kid but he would hide the manual (back when they had all the password codes on each page!) when he went out so i couldnt play it but i found a glitch through another game and some nifty disc swapping, then i eventually completed it when he was out mwhaha.
i loved it when aliens would drop grenades on themselves.. a beautifull thing

Yes I have and I've beaten it several times. Once you build up a good stack of cash from selling manufactured laser weaponry and useless alien items (alien corpses), the game becomes a battlefield tactics game.
Armor-less rookies with HUMAN rifles and HUMAN grenades (they have like a 0.1% chance of injuring a armored soldier) in front, armored veterans with lasers (in their backpacks in case of mind control) in the rear. Plasma only gets issued to those with psi-resistance.

XCOM apocalypse was fun too, although it felt completely different from the previous 2 in the series.

Awesome. I haven't played this since the 90s, but my brother recently got a copy and has been playing the hell out of it. I might have to throw down on some multiplayer and crush him.

I need to read a FAQ or something for this game. It seems like it could be very fun, but I had a rough time figuring it out on my own.
I never played it originally, but got it during one of the crazy Steam sales. It was incredibly hard for me to figure out what the fuck to do, and I gave up when I was annihilated after 1 mission.
