WTF? I love how this just kind of popped up out of nowhere. News of a King of Fighters MMORPG came and went not to long ago, with laughing happening both ways. But this new footage of a King of Fighters MMO (not RPG) isn't as funny -- it actually looks pretty nice.
Coming out of nowhere, from Dragonfly Studios and Triple Games, King of Fighters Online looks to be a 3D brawler with 3D characters that remain somewhat true to the KoF design. The gameplay style reminds me of the old side-scrolling buddy brawlers like Streets of Rage, but with a more open movement field. A tag system will let you to change characters during battle, and special moves have been implemented.
Check out the gameplay trailer for King of Fighters Online below the jump, where you'll see Joe, Kyo, and Athena fighting it out, PvP style.
A press release in choppy English says that King of Fighters Online is expected to be released early next year for PC. Very interesting, don't you think?

I'm pretty sure it was either 2003 or 2004, SNK/Playmore's website announced it and had a screen shot of a bunch of Kyos and Ioris fighting each other in a street. It looked like crap back then. This looks like they improved the graphics, but now it just looks like a generic beat-em up, so it still looks like crap.
You kids and your negativity. Its something new, give it chance (or Jim will chase you, after his sequelitis article).
Don't know about you, fun haters, but I'd rather play this than WoW. MMOs have been damned for a long time, for their lack of variety. If this hits PC, I'll check it out.
Its more or less an online co-op beat em up. How the hell can you go wrong with that idea? No one else can be bothered to true anything new, and apart from The Agency, Crime Craft and APB, none of the other MMOs appeal to me enough.
Thanks SNK and Dragonfly, I'll be buying this. Nice to see SNK able to strike back in a different way to SFIV, besides the upcoming Samurai Showdown on 360, and us gamers stand to benefit. Very surprised this MMO isn't going to grace consoles though (correct if wrong).
I think it looks interesting, as an SNK fan I hope they get some sort of success from this and use any profit towards a second Mark of the Wolves or third Last Blade game. Another plus is that I didn't see Ash Crimson anywhere in that trailer, kudos on that.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But I'll give it a chance.
Can't be any worse than the KoF shmup, right? *snicker*
But it isn't.
You get to fight an unending swarm of "all-look-same" butt pirates with gas masks.
It might be good, though. We have no idea of how it's going to pan out.
Second of all, of course this game has Mai in it...

Bravo, SNK.
Mmm could you elaborate on samurai showdown on the 360?
Also, I want Terry's manbabies.
