Microsoft gave us all a bit of surprise by announcing that they'd be delivering Fable II Pub Games to Xbox LIVE Today. Announced at E3, the standalone XBLA game will allow gamers to get a head start on the upcoming Fable II by winning gold that will then be transferred to their in-game character as experience points.

Developed by Carbonated Games, the XBLA title will set you back 800 points. Alternately, you can just pick up for free as part of a retail reserve program. Or, you can just check out these videos of the in-game tutorials we grabbed, and decided whether this stuff is worth your money and/or time.

Our conclusion? We're not really sure yet. We've lost a few hours playing the pub games, all of which seem to have the odds skewed against winning ... we're heavily in debt to an angry, troll inn-keeper. Above is the gameplay tutorial for "Fortune's Tower," and below the fold you'll find video of "Spinnerbox" and "Keystone."

Guess they don't want a repeat of that matching game exploit.

Ratcliff, said it. That matching game made me so rich I bought a house in each town and had almost every piece of clothing available. If it's hard, then at least people won't be starting with a ridiculous amount of experience.

I hope they sort out the codes to get this game free.
Game in the UK have admitted they are doing it but don't know when even though the games out. WHy should I waste cash when i can get it for free.

At least the americans have it even if it is broken

Yeah, that doesn't really look like something I'd pay for.
Though it looks more legit than Minesweeper game. I mean come on, paying for Minesweeper?

...ehh----i dont like this kind of shit. I've always been terrible at card based games like these.

But i still want to pre-order....

Also, the money transfers as experience, not money?

Kinda lame.. I thought it would transfer over to Fable2 as moneys.. hmm

My pre-order code wasn't working this morning, nor were many others', and I was really looking forward to getting this today... I also always thought that the winnings would transfer into in-game cash once Fable 2 hits, this experience deal isn't nearly as cool...

@RAB - The money you win in the pub games carries over to your single player game. You could literally be able to buy an entire town on release day, if you're good/lucky.

I noticed that Nick mentioned that it carries over as experience, which is incorrect. It does indeed carry over as gold.

That does look pretty cool... Then again each of the Indian Casinos around here know me by name so I'll be happy with anything that involves cards, dice, and crushing defeat.

I tried the trial version last night and it was quite a bit of fun.I got some extra points so I'll probably pick it up tonight.

odds skewed against winning

Not half! Sometimes its pretty much impossible not to haemorrhage large amounts of money before winning the smallest amount back, particularly in that spinner game.

Nevermind, I'll stick at it.

Looks like I would find the music annoying after a while.
