WTF is a 'gaming surface'? photo

We got an interesting press release today announcing a series of licensed "gaming surfaces" featuring Starcraft II. Now, when I hear the phrase, "gaming surface," I instinctively think, "table," seeing as that would be a surface on which you would play a game. I do not think, "mouse pad."

And that's what these are. They're mouse pads. Now, I understand the desire to make your product stand out from the pack and, from the description in the press release, I'm sure they're very nice mouse pads. But it's a f--king mouse pad, people. A mouse pad with attractive art and a coating intended to provide an optimal amount of glide, sure, but a mouse pad nonetheless.

These mouse pads produced by Steel Series will come in two different styles, featuring the above image of Kerrigan fighting Zeratul and another with a focus on the Terrans. They will retail for $14.99 and will be available from GameStop and Amazon.

SteelSeries Unveils New Blizzard Entertainment® Co-Branded StarCraft® II Gaming Surfaces

StarCraft® II QcK Limited Edition Mousepads Provide an Optimized Textured Surface for Smoothness and Glide During Game Play

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, SteelSeries, a leading manufacturer of game peripherals and accessories, unveiled a new line of gaming surfaces featuring art from Blizzard Entertainment’s highly anticipated StarCraft® II. The QcK Limited Edition Terran Marine and Kerrigan vs. Zeratul editions are designed with a non-slip rubber base which prevents the pads from sliding, no matter what surface the mousepad is placed on, and is optimized for optical and laser technology providing an overall more reliable gaming experience.

“StarCraft and its expansion have together sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, and we believe StarCraft II will prove equally influential and popular, making this a great opportunity to provide gamers with surfaces that help to improve performance and game play,” said Brian Stech, SteelSeries President of the Americas. “We are incredibly excited to have an opportunity to continue our partnership with the designers from Blizzard Entertainment and develop surfaces that we know StarCraft players will enjoy.”

The SteelSeries QcK Limited Edition Terran Marine and Kerrigan vs. Zeratul gaming surfaces are made of high quality cloth material and optimized textured surface which guarantees both smoothness and glide. The special surface graphic on each mousepad depicts characters from the upcoming StarCraft II, which will pick up where the events of StarCraft: Brood War left off, following familiar characters and new heroes through the next chapter of the series’ epic story.

The gaming surfaces will be available in July 2009 and will be sold for $14.99 from GameStop and Amazon.

Isn't there some website where you can just make your own mousepad for 3 bucks with free shipping? Couldn't you just use that picture and save 12 bucks? ;)

Mouse pads? People still use them? I threw mine out since the early 90's.

Actually a mouse pad was the first thing I thought of.

@Chronic Logic.
I guess you're not playing on the PC?
Even with todays laser mice really good mousepads will give you a serious edge over other players.

When I saw the words 'gaming surface' I thought they meant something like Microsoft's Surface and then I saw the Starcraft picture and got slightly excited for the possibilities of hand gesture controlled Starcraft. Blizzard just decided to disappoint me yet again instead.

Yeah, I totally thought "gaming surface" referred to a multi-touch table.

I don't wanna be more of a dick than I already am but as a semi-professional PC gamer a good mousepad is REALLY important. More professional PC gaming is really gear dependant, something that might justify my 40$ mousepad, 80$ mouse, 80$ headset and 80$ keyboard.

Then again, it's really a niche market. Although all the people that have used my mousepad recognises the difference and nearly understands why I got so excited over the announcement of that sweet Heaton branded mousepad from QPad.

Console peasants will never have the capacity to understand a high quality gaming surface.

I tried these styles of mouse pads for a while, then tried a quality cloth pad, and man I'll never go back. The idea of near zero friction is nice, but when these mouse pads inevitably get dirty, you're scraping around bits of grime and have to clean the mouse pad feet and before you know it the teflon on the mouse is worn off and you're dragging it around worse than without a pad. The cloth pads absorb any random sweat, grime, or moisture from that soda you put down on it, without it affecting the mouse movement.

When someone says gaming surface, I think table-top gaming.

Gaming surface? When did that name change take place? Probably around when people started calling fountains "water features".

Yeah, that makes me think of glorious things and you give me shit. The first thing I imagined was a large version of an iPhone that you could control the battle like a touch pad.

i was picturing some sort of set up like that game where you used skittles to fight zombies. my brain is kind of stroking off right now and i can't think of the proper name for the technique, or even make something up that sounds plausible. i'm sure you guys know what i mean.

anyway, mouse pads. lame.
