The American version of the Lost Odyssey packaging sucks. Period. On the left hand side of the above image is the American packaging. It shoves three discs onto one spot and leaves the fourth disc in a little sleeve on the booklet portion. The right hand side of the image is the International packaging. The case is bigger and was designed to contain all four discs properly. Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea? JRPGs are known for their amazing cases (look at all the PS1 JRPGs). It's bad enough that the Xbox has next to no RPGs as it is, and when they do, it seems like they half ass everything. Sure, there are people who probably don't give a shit and just want to play the game. But in most cases, the people that buy these types of games are the hardcore collectors that try to keep everything nice and pristine. None of this compares to Jared from GameTap review copy though. Now that's awesome. [NeoGAF and CronosBlade's C-Blog.]

Could'a been on blu-ray.....
people crying in 3,2,1
fucking awful looking.
how long until the blue dragon argument rears its ugly head? Superior packaging as well as story, gameplay, yada yada yada.
Yeah, Blu-Ray. Nobody needs it. Let's just get every game onto 5 DVD's.
I picked up my copy 20min ago, I feel shafted :(
Also who cares about disk format, good games are good even if i have to get up once in few hours to change the disk, god forbid.
That is completely unacceptable. They must've had a budget cut or something to even be able to think about putting it out so atrociously.
That's just lazy...
I thought multiple disc packaging was perfected during the PS1 era.
Rip off. No excuses. Buying the international.
Wait, Microsoft Studios being lazy when it comes to packaging?
Lazy is right.
We should start a petition in protest!
This is just... so fucking wrong.
Hopefully the nerd backlash will mean better packaging in the future. Did they learn nothing from the Halo 3 package debacle?
Also, THIS JUST IN!!!
Too Human is now available!
Who knew...
There is no excuse for that. Its not just because of the die hard RPG geeks, I like to keep my discs secure and not scratched, I couldnt give two shits about any sort of fancy packaging, as long as it does its job.
This doesn't do its job.
phail.jpg
The fact that it is 4 discs isn't a big deal at all, but this is just lazy, trying to save some money in production is fine but not when the package is crap.
i guess the cost of disc and people paying 60 bux hurts their profit so they can't make an acceptable package
guess they should have used the blurays
well if that makes any difference :P Europe, Australia and I think Canada(not sure) is paying more for the product :P
not that I'm trolling or anything.. just saying, that might has something to do with that :P
Yeah, my Japanese copy looks beeeeeeautiful.
Europe and Australia always pay more for the product. (Probably Canada too, ever since the US$ went belly up.)
We don't normally get better packaging, just release delays. I don't want to pay more for release delays.
Attention Console Makers: Region unlock my console please, or I'll do it myself
foxhound009: Aren't games always more expensive in those countries anyway?
One word: Blu-ray.
I don’t mind multiple discs, but that packaging is just unacceptable. Has no one at Microsoft seen multi-disc box sets of movies or TV shows?
VIRTUAL HIGH FIVE JIM!!!!
@bronxbomber: That would have cost more money, of course. And I hate the yankees.
Just sayin.
eh...
hooray for living in Europe for once :-)
Don't understand why they wouldn't just use the same type of case as the international version.
Now I know why my friend was telling me, "Dude, Destructoid loves you." ;D
As someone who likes to keep all of their games in pristine condition, that would drive me batshit.
Wow that's lame, I don't really mind that the three disks are at the same spot like Blue Dragon but that paper sleeve is like a kick in the nuts. Makes me want to cancel my preorder and buy that Japanese version with the cool packaging, does it work in a North American console?
This is honestly the first time I've been so glad to live in the PAL territory.
This really sucks. The paper sleeve just makes the last disc look like a throw-away bonus/demo disc. Do not want.
OMG I just got home and opened it up and instead of playing the game, I cried for about 20 minutes, then I came on here and posted this msg and on like 5 other forums as well. I mean WTF??!?!?!?!!?!?!?!??!!?!? Theres a disc in a paper sleeve!!! I'd rather buy the Jap version and not understand a single word, rather than have to look at this pathetic paper sleeve or even actually play the game, which doesn't matter at all at this point. I just want to die, or kill someone, maybe both.
@Xelotath: I would assume not...the PS3 doesn’t region-lock its games, but the 360 and Wii do.
Hamza CTZ Aziz
Aren't games always more expensive in those countries anyway?
Yes, but they shouldn't be, back in the 90's the American dollar was crapping all over the Australian dollar, nowdays not so much. But they still feel the need to charge us between $95-$120 aud for a new release, without really justifying it.
@yaisuah: Epic fakepost?
Please be an epic fakepost...
The question is, if this were another genre of game that say is more popular amongst the Xbox 360 userbase, would this have been the case?
My money is on "no."

Hahaha, they just jammed 3 discs onto ONE spindle and hoped for the best? That shit's retarded.
FUCK. I hit the back button and now I really need to go die. Fucking paper sleeves.
ummm...i think its the exact same case that they ordered in bulk with Blue Dragon...its just this game has an extra disc so they threw it in a paper sleeve
Can't even buy a green 4 disc dvd cases that have a space for the manual anywhere online :(
What do you guys think about the new TNA IMPACT game coming to 360.
LAME.
I think its awaome, but alright thats your opinion.
I was pissed when I opened my copy earlier today and saw that ghetto FAIL
that's just sad. everyone that purchased the american version should flood the xbox forum and bombard ms customer service.
say, don't we have bill gates' email address now?
yeah just went over to the forums and there are about 10 threads..but I doubt MS staff actually looks on the forums
either way I'm pissed because I actually want this game...and this does hinder my want of it. I dont want the place where I am supposed to store my discs safely to be the place that scratches the disc up.
Ahh nice to see my pic making the rounds. To a picture of my bedroom on Destructoid, I feel all famous or something, even though nobody knows who I am, lol!
What that picture does not show is that a few days later my Xbox 360 died and chewed through Disc 1 of that pretty game.
BEHOLD!!!!! NEXT GEN IN PACKAGING DESIGN!!
and if you beg for it, we might release by 2009... the COLOR SET!!
lol, wow just wow. this shows how they said in a paperlight way "screw NA packaging"
what would sexy RL Tifa say about this...
Do you think the case for marvel ultimate alliance/forza 2 bundle would work and fit all these? I can just transfer them over to that case I have
The line must be drawn HERE!
Seriously, that's pathetic. Good grief.
Thta looks like the box I keep my bootlegs in complete with paper sleeve. I bet the manual is just the color cover and when you open it it's actually a bunch of takeout menus stapled together.
The way I see it, America is in a recession. A mothafuckin' recession! Money is tight and allocated, especially in the plastics industry. It costs a couple nickels and dimes to make additional plastic parts both movable and immovable. Thank the good folks at Microsoft for making this more affordable by removing the plastic with a piece of paper for a sleeve to making my gameplaying enjoyment more affordable. Sure we don't have big money like in European nations and glorious Japan, but we at least have a bustling economy in rich drunken white teen actresses. If we can drain their blood and tainted meat we can sell for high profits.
I think they figure, if its the average joe, he dosnt care what box its in. If its the hardcore fan they'll care and not only buy the crappy american version, but then go and import a second copy for the box, thus paying the big ol Msoft twice for the same thing.
I don't mind, really. Then again, I also didn't mind when Panzer Dragoon Saga (a four disc game) had three discs in paper sleeves and only one in the tray.
You all can suck my cock. what do you thonk of that.
I have a 4 disc DVD case laying around XD
Hey. It was either ad campaign or fancy cases.
Thats bs i would be pissed if i put up 60 bucks and got that shit.
multiple disc games are so 1990's
lulz
Thank god I ordered the japanese(english version) from Playasia.
I wish games still came in the thick Ps1 RPG cases. Only crappy thing was when one broke.
Wow their really is no excuse for this in 2008 this is just pathetic. Tho i would like to point out how sad and easy it is to get the fanboys up in arms i think i spotted a few posts mentioning blu ray and "no multidisc games on my ps3" thats funny. But it is scary that people are that damn lazy that you can't get up and change discs heh. But the topic at hand that is lazy and very sad for a product that costs 60$ would be packaged like that. I gotta call out the epic failure on MS's part
Shitty packaging aside
This game is on 4 discs? It better be hella epic...like 120hrs of story epic.
but you'll be playing this SO MUCH that one disc will always be in your console right??? yeahhhhhhh
Honestly, I don't really care about the aesthetics of, as long as the packaging method they use doesn't physically damage the discs. However, from the looks of it, that's actually a pretty strong consideration here, and it looks pretty crappy.
Also, PS3/Blu-ray fanboys in an Xbox thread? What's that I smell? Is that some Internet up in here? Phew. It stinks like shit.
Pretty lazy way to produce it, but ill take getting up every few hours to change a disk over the instalation crap the PS3 is coming out with atm.
Jared has an epic review that sums it up nicely.
They are saving the good packaging for the good games.
....:(.
wow, i have never sseen so many people bitch about something SOOOO meaningless, fuck.
