Writer's Guild announces nominees for Videogame Writing Award photo

The Writer's Guild of America has put out their list of nominees for the 2007 Videogame Writing Award. They had announced their plans to do the awards back in October, leaving it open to any game done between December 1, 2006 and November 30, 2007. After that, those who wish to submit to the awards will have to join the WGA, stating:

For this first year, work that was not produced under WGA jurisdiction may have been submitted, but must contain separate writing credit(s). Writers of source material were not eligible for awards consideration. At the time scripts were submitted, the credited game writer(s) must have been or applied to become members of the WGA's New Media Caucus.

So, who got nominated?

  • -Crash of the Titans from Sierra Entertainment, written by Christopher Mitchell
  • -Dead Head Fred from D3 Publisher, written by Dave Ellis and Adam Cogan
  • The Simpsons Game from EA, with Matt Selman as the lead writer, and Tim Long and Matt Warburon as other writers. Dialogue by Jeff Poliquin
  • -The Witcher from Atari, written by Sande Chen and Anne Toole, also mentioning lead story designer Artur Ganszyniec, dialogue by Sebastian Stepien, and additional dialogue by Marcin Blacha
  • -World in Conflict from Sierra Entertainment, with story design by Christofer Emgard, and Larry Bond as a story consultant, while having Ed Zuckerman as a script consultant

I'm about as surprised as the rest of you. Where is BioShock? In the comments of the first post, you readers also called for Sam and Max and Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions to get nominated. I can't judge, seeing as I haven't sat down and played through all these games, but there were a lot of titles that I would've expected to see on this list that didn't make it.

Before we go ahead and jump down the throats of the WGA, though, remember that these scripts had to be submitted. So, it's entirely possible that no one at 2K Games decided to submit BioShock, nor someone from Square-Enix decided to submit FFT. Of course, the Writer's Guild can't give any comment as to who submitted to the award.

Since the WGA strike is still going on, it's pretty much guaranteed that the winner will be announced via press release, since no awards ceremony will be held.

Out of those I guess I'd vote for the Simpsons game

But I think 2K really dropped the ball on this one by not entering the BioShock script

It's great to see Crash of the Titans get a nod. The game itself is fairly awful, it the writing is truly hilarious.

Two words: The Witcher! It has, in my opinion, a great storyline with some well written dialogues.

For some reason, I felt like I was upside-down looking at the nominated games.

Weird.

The Witcher? Seriously? I mean, it was entertaining, and the world was well crafted, but some of the dialogue seemed a little... sparse.
Geralt is a man of few words.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Writer's Guild only took nominations where the writers were members of the guild. No idea, and frankly don't care, but wouldn't surprise me.

No Portal? Anyway the Simpsons was pretty good, better than many Simpsons episodes.

Well, I mean, Final Fantasy Tactics was technically written over 10 years ago, so does that really count?

Aside from the obvious Portal/Bioshock snubs, no nominations for Mass Effect, Super Paper Mario, Persona 3 or the latest Phoenix Wright game surprised me. But it's clear that there's almost no non-Western element to the nominations whatsoever. Regardless, it's now my dream to win this award someday.

Well, it was a complete rewrite, Zargon, so I think it should still be eligible.

I think the lack of Bioshock may have more to do with the fact that the Writer's Guild *of America* may not be taking nominees from Australian work. Same goes for the Japanese stuff.

Needs moar Bioshock and Portal. Although nitpicking at the nominees aside, I'm ecstatic that this is even happening.

Ratchet and Clank? Also at GameStop. Same game for the last 6 or 7 years.

Heavenly Sword? It's my wife's game, so it's still there unfortunately. As for it's writing, not bad, but what about the main bad guy? I remember that scene where he says Nariko wants to "eat his genitals"

Great job reading everyone. The scripts had to be sent in to the WGA, thus the lack of some true greats.

I, for one, would pick World in Conflict. It was the first RTS story I actually followed and cared about. It had characters and emotions, and had a fairly novel idea - instead of attacking the Soviets, they were attacking you. Half the game is you running away and tightening your defenses, leading up to a revealing and a backstory on most of the unexplained character connections in the first act.

Also, the Witcher is a close second.

I dunno - for my comparative voice acting shit, I always look back to 2006's fantastic "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion", and I have to tell ya, having Patrick Stewart (Cap'n Picard, Star Trek TNG) voice Emperor Martin Septim just made that character for me.

Especially compared to the other characters, who seemed to talk just fine until halfway through a conversation and then start to talk like they'd just had a live turkey stuck tailfirst in their windpipe.
