Wrestling on the show floor? The old E3 is back! photo

When I tell people (especially new game journos) about the "old E3," I always point out what a crazy spectacle it was. Thinking of the last good one, E3 2006, my mind recalls images of scantily clad girls pushing their way through a crowd, handing out lollipops. Nerds gathered around standees and posed for pictures. Dozens of GameStop employees tried to look calm and collected, like they were supposed to be there. In the background, skateboarders were flying off ramps and doing tricks in the sky.

It feels like we're slowly getting back to the craziness of the old E3, and Konami is definitely doing their part this year to make that happen. In honor of their first Mexican video game, Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes del Ring, they're going to have live Lucha Libre Wrestling matches on the show floor! To me, that's just as crazy as Tony Hawk and friends flying roof high in '06 -- maybe even more crazy.

What's cool about the live Lucha Libre wrestling matches is that they'll decide the cover of a game, which is likely an E3 first. Dr. Wagner (current #1 in the world) and an unnamed #2 will go head to head, with the winner to be on the game's cover.

Beyond this, people with names like Laredo Kid, Murder Clown, Mini Abismo Negro and more are going to host autograph sessions on the show floor. How crazy is this?

I hear stories of the old E3 now that I've begun to crowd myself with video game journalist and what not plus I'm well read in the history of E3.

It was a spectacle for damn sure. Basically I picture it as a nerdy Vegas strip.

This is awesome. What's more awesome is that they got Dr. Wagner.

Dr. Wagner will grace the cover. It's gonna be a SHOOTFEST. Wonder how many smart marks are creaming in their jeans over this. This would be even better if Tracy Smothers showed up to bring some Ultra Mega Mass Homicide, everybody dies...

AAA and Konami are really going out to promote this game. I really hope it lives up to all of this.

Ha ha! Awesome! Thanks for reminding me how crazy E3 was, in past years! E3 '06 was insane! From a far distance, you could spot Hawk and company skating high toward the building's rafters! It was surreal, to say the least.
This year, Mexican wrestlers grappling to "decide" the cover of a game! Cool. =)

"Dozens of GameStop employees tried to look calm and collected, like they were supposed to be there."

did they not have a right or something?

@pyrex:

Most of those employees didn't really have any work to do at E3, they just took up space.

@dale:

Oddly enough this isn't even the first time pro wrestling has been at E3. The first time I'm aware of is when they had FMW in kentia hall promoting tokyopop dvds. That was in 2000 though so I don't know if you were covering E3 then.

E3 06 was good times, especially over at the Tecmo booth where they were showcasing that DoA Xtreme 2, and Tony Hawk doing his thing on that makeshift half-pipe, those were good times. Having sights around like that this year would be amazing, since last year was a pretty big step down from 06, aside from getting a picture with Mr. Destructoid. :D
