Wow! Xfire says that WoW logged hours dropped 18 percent from last month photo

In Xfire's tracking of the gameplay statistics of over 8 million users, they noticed that World of Warcraft playing users' average game time for September dropped 18 percent from the August numbers. That doesn't seem right, does it?

WoW isn't alone -- all of the tracked MMOs' average gameplay hours have dropped. The second place Guild Wars showed a 13 percent drop, and Silkroad Online fell 27 percent. Shooters are down as well, with top ranked games Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer and Counter-Strike dropping 12 and 18 percent respectively.

It's probably safe to assume that some gamers had to go back to school, and the end of summer vacation in the US and Europe is a possible reason for the drop in traffic. Who knows, maybe Halo 3 had something to do with it.

Also, maybe their userbase is realizing the somewhat obvious fact that WoW sucks.

Atually as an xfire user, none of those things i believe are the reason behind the xfire dropping. Recently xfire has updated it's interface and now it seems to take up more ram and it has changed its visual appearence aswell. (its ugly). Anyways, i believe people used to use xfire because it was a small, simple program. Now that it has been blown out of perportion, i believe alot of people have stopped using it. I know i have. and actually EVERYONE i know stopped using it also.

Personally, I have retired from WoW as of last week. To be "successful" in the game, one needs to practically live there. With a gf, two jobs, and other hobbies outside of gaming, I just couldn't commit myself anymore. Vying for a top guild, who'll only take you if you're spec'd to their specifications, and always hunting for tier 3 armor, in between marathon-farming sessions, proved too much for me.

I'm headed back to the Command and Conquer series for immediate gratification.

Abandon the good ship WoW, and go collect all those Halos!

(Don't get hit or else you will drop them all)

I think people are realizing games like WoW have no real purpose. There is no legitimate end goal. Those that do exist are purely ego boosters and bragging rights. And honestly, does ANYONE want to brag about the sweet armor they found last night? I doubt it.

And Halo (sadly).

I vote school as well, a lot of my guild mates are back in school and have exams and midterms coming up so they are not playing as much. And as of last night I've canceled my subscription as well, I've got till November 24th on my current payment. And to be honest it feels good to be leaving it behind, I only log in on the weekends to pvp some in the battlegrounds for the bonus honor. I've done all I wanted to, the game is addictive, I used to rush home after work and log on to raid, now that I don't do that anymore it just isn't interesting. Having cleared almost every instance pre-expansion, got 1/2 way through nax, and a lot of the newer content accept the newer 25 mans, old guild broke up, I just can't play it anymore.

I'm sure Halo and school had a lot to do with it but recently my brother brought up an interesting point. He's a Paladin in WoW (like my first character as well). He's playing through the expansion now and to get a flying mount as a Paladin it's a quest that requires your epic from the standard game. He's found that there's literally NO ONE to party with in the standard zones anymore since they're basically all onto the expansion. I'm sure tons of people who have been playing or just joined up a few months ago are frustrated at having no help in a zone ever....

Perhaps this is lending to the decrease? Maybe all the new MMOs coming out are spurring migrations.

Adding to the Xfire is bloated comments: I usually use a text chat as a way to have all my gamer friends organized into one place (since they all use different mainstream clients, AIM, yahoo, MSN, etc). But for some reason, Xfire has been lagging. On text chat. With other clients it's instant, but with Xfire there will either be a pause or I will get "high latency detected" and my message will have been dropped.

It's getting annoying, and I may have to consider alternatives. Suggestions? Voice chat isn't a really important thing to have, since we either play on LAN's or just don't play at the same time. However, launching games from the client is cool as is a smooth "In-game" interface.

Falthorn makes a good point... though the in game voice chat seems to barely even be used. I'm sure it will make pick up group raiding a hell of a lot easier though.
